November 16, 201311 yr Has anyone got any info from the first year so far of Jameela Jamil's tenure at the helm of the Chart Show, even at least the Jul - Sept quarter. Has the effect of the change of presenter closed the gap between Radio 1, Jameela & the ILR BT40, Rich & Kat who have been dominating ratings over the last few years. I'd be surprised if they've gone up at all. Taking the mick out of non-target audience acts, stars plugging their hits and competitions aimed at 15 year olds isn't really going to widen audience appeal I'm afraid. Chart Show DJ's have always in the past talked to the audience as adults, Jameela seems to come over as if she's still at school talking to her class as the cool young teacher down wiv da kids. Which is what the BBC guvners have told them to do.....
November 16, 201311 yr Big Top 40 has gained & is now on 2.5 million listeners. Which has something to do with the fact, that they no longer inclued Airplay...I'd imagine. Although, they do not combine single tracks & album tracks, as one. Except if they appear on a compilation, like Now 86 etc. Artist album tracks, wil not be combined with the single version. That's why Eminem & Rihanna, were only #3 in the weekly top 10, in the first half hour. Haven't a clue, the number of people turning off Radio One, but it's not only Top 40 turn offs. The Breakfast show is at an all time low & Radio 4 have more listeners. Are they worried? I doubt it.
November 16, 201311 yr Radio 1's mistake is targeting a younger and younger audience - an audience that doesn't really exist anymore because most young people now do not listen to the radio regularly, especially when they have instead unlimited streaming and/or videos from YouTube to satisfy their music needs. Why listen to what the DJ wants to play you when you can listen to whatever you want, wherever you want - and in terms of discovering new music, the internet is faster and better at doing this. All they are doing is getting older listeners (of which there are many) switching off, and losing masses of listeners (just look at Grimshaw's 1 million loss on the breakfast show).
November 16, 201311 yr not to mention part of the charm and appeal of the uk singles chart and radio 1 was the sheer variety of music they used to cater for, evenings and daytime. Now it's all very samey, and instead of playing the best music wherever it's from and whatever it is, it's all targeted corporate and market-researched and utterly unexciting. radio 2 does a much better job these days, though it's annoying that the BBC see music fans in two age categories (15 to 30, and over 30) which is utter nonsense, assuming music fans hit 30 and stop being keen on new music (I'm 55, still love new music) and also assumes that everyone over 30 likes the same music - that's lumping people who grew up in the 90's/early 2000's in with people who loved 50's and 60's music (or older in the case of the wonderful Desmond Carrington, going back to the 30's). It's also insulting to young people, I'm well aware teens like their own music and rebel against older music (that's why pop is cyclical and ever-changing and exciting) but to assume they don't like older music at all (or different types of music) is silly. Acts you like at 14 aren't necessarily what you'll love at 24, people change and try other stuff.
November 16, 201311 yr I don't think Radio 1 has a chance at beating the audience figures of Capital, Heart, and 100+ other stations combined, regardless of how they do their chart. I said this before when we discussed this, but most of the people that listen to the chart show aren't intentionally listening to it. They're simply turning on their normal radio station, and that's what happens to be on.

And yep, many are listening because their dials, are permanently glued to their old 1990s local station, that no longer exists. But (like I said last week) Big Top 40 is much better presented that the Radio One f***** & are rather clued up, on what they are actually saying. I suppose in a way the chart, is a part story of who, has bought what, as it only covers iTunes sales. Though, you really can switch off at 6.15, because the Top 10 move around is ipso callapso & meaningless, & just trying to be in the style of those brilliant Network Chart days. Cor, what a long sentence. Teacher would write "See Me" underneath! I would say to Popchartfreak, that Radio 2 is rather an ever growing Chat station & needs to tone down the overdone traffic reports, news, sport & rabbit & play more music. Have you heard Sounds Of The 80s on there? Rabbito 2 & Texto 2 & Email 2, would a better name. Who cares that Shagnasty is having a bath, while listening & that he loves Spandau Ballet? Only Shagnasty himself, I expect. Edited November 16, 201311 yr by davetaylor
