Midweek Charts update: Lily Allen overtakes Bastille and Barlow

Source: MW

by Paul Williams

Lilly Allen has pushed ahead of early front runners Bastille and Gary Barlow on her way to a possible third UK No 1 single on Sunday.

At the end of play on Wednesday it looked like either Virgin act Bastille's Of The Night and Polydor's Gary Barlow with Let Me Go would debut at the top this weekend with just 15 sales separating them, according to the Offciial Charts Company. But Allen has transformed the race with the Parlophone-issued Somewhere Only We Know now ahead of previous leaders Bastille, albeit by fewer than 200 sales up to the end of business on Thursday.

If it does make it Somewhere Only We Know, the soundtrack to John Lewis's TV Christmas campaign, would give Allen a third UK No 1 single after 2006's Smile and The Fear in 2008. It would also be the first No 1 single penned by Keane and the first for Parlophone since it was acquired by Warner. Allen and Parlophone are aso on course for a second Top 10 hit this week with her Hard Out Here new at 8 in the midweeks.

Below Allen, Bastille are now at No 2 in the week to date and Barlow at 3, while Polydor act Ellie Goulding slips 3-4 with How Long Will I Love You and Eminem's Interscope/Polydor single The Monster featuring Rihanna loses a place to 5.

On artist albums Robbie Williams' new Island set Swing Both Ways will on Friday surpass the total first-week sales of its 2012 predecessor Take The Crown on its way to debuting at No 1. It surpassed 80,000 sales on Thursday, around 50,000 more than its closest rival, EMI act Jake Bugg's Shangri-La, new in second place. Eminem's Interscope/Polydor-issued The Marshall Mathers LP 2 drops 2-3 and Celine Dion's Columbia-handled Loved Me Back To Life 3-4, while RCA act JLS's farewell Goodbye - The Greatest Hits is new at 5.

On compilations Universal and Sony's newly-issued Now! 86 is on the verge of surpassing 200,000 sales and continues to outsell the market's 50 other leading titles combined.

Really hope Lily gets it, but Bastille are performing on Alan Carr's Chatty Man tonight and Gary Barlow can plug his song on XFactor/Xtra Factor and then is on the Jonathan Ross show singing his single tomorrow night as well.....

No but I'm not on National television every week and pretending to be M. Perfect in front of millions of people.

His comment to Tulisa was personnal, low and totally out of topic, and god knows I'm far from a Tulisa fan.

It is just a perfect example of his hypocritical act. And it's not like the music is any good anyway (but this is only an opinion of course). :)

Give the guy a break. He's spoken about how he wasn't himself last year, struggling to deal with X Factor after his daughter Poppy died. He's not usually rude to people and any perceived 'acting' is due to his discomfort at being under such scrutiny on TV. Ever started a new job and felt like s fish out of water? Then you should have a little more comprehension of people's behaviour.

He's a brilliant songwriter, his problem is the fact that he's programmed into a box of writing tricks that make his songs sometimes overly generic. When he lets go and stops worrying about what people think (which he still does, even now, having not really got past what happened in 2000) he writes great songs. There's a track called Dying Inside on the new album. I think it could alter your perception.

Bastille will have it after tonight I think, Lily couldn't pull ahead much in the past 2 days...

Happy for them, Just not Gary :)

Burn, Wake Me Up, The Fox and Talk Dirty are featured on the NOW86 compilation album, hence their rapid climb back up the chart. Lost 8 acts from last week's top 40 singles chart they consist of The Poppy Girls, Ed Sheeran, Katy B, Foxes, Justin Bieber, Conor Maynard, Britney Spears, Robin Thicke/2 Chainz. Biggest faller of the week goes to Celine Dion down to #34.

Album wise, Gabrielle has failed to make the top 40 today with her GHs package, biggest faller of the week in the album chart goes to Tinie Tempah with 'Demostration' down to 39. Other notable albums James Arthur at #10, Keane at #11, Katy Perry at #15, Killers at #16.

29 Jason Derulo feat. 2 Chainz – Dirty Talk

Sorry to nit-pick but I believe you need to switch the words around.

Is the original version of 'Somewhere Only We Know' still in the Top40?

Is James Arthur still holding at No 10?

Its in my summary above

And yes Lily has done it :cheer:

Not yet she hasn't. Bastille are closing in at 0.9556 on Kworb. Are they also doing really well on bundles or other sites? I was surprised to see they were at #1 on Wednesday but not on iTunes.

I've got my fingers crossed for them because I can't bear that dreadful Lily Allen record. It's also highly amusing to see an old Corona cover doing so well.

Blimey that's a very tight top 3, it could go either way. Sunday chart will be far interesting, the final outcome could be entirely different, we just have to wait and see. Gary Barlow performing on Jonathan Ross tomorrow night, and Robbie Williams with Olly Murs performing on Graham Norton tonight
