What I would say about the charts this week

US:

The expendable 3 bombed,I think the leaking really hurt this but overseas markets will save it

Lets be cops did great. It opened on the Wednesday and did 26M for 5 days and it did more on the 3 days than AMWTDITW, Blended and Sex Tape

Next week will be interesting. If I stay has the twitter buzz but I don't if its going to do well. I hope it does because I am desperate to see it (Prediction- 21M). I thought sin city 2 would be dead by now but their are fans and 300 2 did well for a long gap between sequels (Prediction- 18M). When the game stands tall wont do anything massive (PREDICTION- 11M)

In the UK I think Lucy could be number 1 next week

Would anyone be interested in me starting a topic where I put the full UK release schedule (wide releases only) so people know what films they wanna see are coming out?

Also just a few differences with US actuals

GOTG stayed above 25M just

Expendables 3 ended up at 15.8M

The giver got 12.3M

Boyhood fell out of the top 10 as Hercules got back in with 2.1M

I would be interested in a release schedule Ultraviolence! It would be a nice referral guide.

Thanks for those updates, I can't update them right now but I will when I can.

A release schedule will be very handy! Thank you! :D

LOL at 'Expendables 3'. Knew it'd flop/not do as well as people thought it would. I wonder how long it'll be until they cast The Rock and/or Vin Diesel though.

If anyone thought TE3 did bad in America, times that bad by 100 and that's where your at for Sin City 2

If I stay is doing a little less then i expected but really well still and when the game stands talk is matching my projection

I should be able to post America estimates and some UK numbers tonight :)

Chart points USA

  • If I stay had a solid opening for a young adult film. Did better than the giver, beautiful creatures, mortal instruments, the host and more. Pretty good for a film with a smaller fan base than those mentioned. It also won Friday but continued the frontloaded trend of YA adaptations.
  • WTGST opened just below draft day and million dollar arm but it did ok
  • Sin city 2 bombed opening to 22% of sin city I believe. It should have been released on 5 September. 5 September 2008 that is :)
  • GOTG reclaimed the number 1 after having a softer drop compared to TMNT. Guardians Of The Galaxy is also now the biggest film of the summer- a feat literally no one saw coming at the start of May
  • ACTUALS UPDATE- TE3 went in front of The Giver and WTGST fell under 9M so it did quite poorly in the end

Chart Points UK

  • Lucy stormed the UK box office as well with a massive debut of £3M
  • Into the storm did solid
  • What If did really bad saying it was a 5 day opening
  • Deliver us from evil did really poor and was 10th or 11th without previews
  • TE3 plummeted this week

Edited by Ultraviolence1989

If I stay definitley surprised me as I expected it to open at around $8 million or maybe just $10 is lucky so YAY :cheer:

Worth mentioning that If I Stay was also #1 on Friday's box office before falling behind on saturday and sunday.

Added in actuals for America, added in and updated some chart points and Into The Storm's UK number is now up. Expect the rest from the UK tomorrow because of Bank Holiday today

KEY POINTS FOR THE FIRST 3 WEEKS

  • Guardians Of The Galaxy passed 300M
  • The Identical bombed with a 1.5M opening from nearly 2,000 theatres
  • No Good Deed did surprisingly good numbers
  • Dolphin Tale 2 is doing less than the first one but still has solid numbers
  • The Maze Runner is another big hit in the YA adaptations and has earned over 40M in its first 7 days. A sequel has been scheduled for next year
  • The Drop has done quite well as it has been played in a quite small amount of theatres (809 and 1,192)
  • A Walk Among The Tombstones opened below expectations and looks like it could take a big fall agains the equalizer this weekend (it already had a big fall on Thursday just from Equalizer evening screenings)
  • This Is Where I Leave You had an ok debut
  • Tusk bombed really badly

9. (4) The Hundred-Foot Journey - £437,650

10. (7) The Inbetweeners 2 - £332,564

19th September

1. (1) The Boxtrolls - £1,333,137

2. (-) A Walk Among the Tombstones - £1,317,948

3. (3) Pride - £578,794

9. (5) A Most Wanted Man - £327,967

10. (6) Before I Go to Sleep - £306,223

  • Sex Tape did quite well in the UK surprisingly after bombing spectacularly in America. It debuted at the top on its opening week (however it would have been 2nd with 985k if it didn't have a 5 day opening)
  • Before I Go To Sleep, The Hundred Foot Journey and A Most Wanted Man all did solid business
  • The Boxtrolls was another animated hit and it debuted to £2M (including 600k from previews so it was literally flat in its 2nd weekend) However unlike sex tape, it still would have been top without previews. It is a great film so I am happy it's doing well
  • Pride had a disappointing opening weekend after reviews and buzz suggested it would do better but it has held on great in midweek due to an older audience + fantastic reviews so it's heading towards a good total. It also would have been 4th on OW if it wasn't for some previews
  • The Inbetweeners 2 is now the 2nd biggest movie of the year
  • A Walk Among The Tombstones did quite well and the riot club disappointed

Would anyone be interested in me doing a thread on UK and America top 10 (or 50) chart runs for this year in the film charts?

Thanks for posting! I'm glad that Pride has managed to spend 2 weeks in the Top 3, such a good film. Hopefully it holds up well for a while longer.

A notable flop in the UK this week is The Giver, which only got to #14!

I'm not surprised about the giver, should have been released in November. It was placed on the schedule too soon to release

That seems horrendous. :drama: I don't think it even looked too bad, I was quite interested in seeing it. Maybe it wasn't promoted enough that Taylor Swift has a part :P

Just as I don't know where else to put them, I have thought of 2 thread ideas but I don't want to start them if no ones interested

1. American charts flashback: 1 year, 5 years and 1 years with figures and commentary every week until the end of the year

2. UK and America chart runs for this year

Please tell me your opinions on them

Back to box office, in America the Equalizer has got off to a fantastic start on Friday (around 12M), the Boxtrolls is doing well and should outgross coralline and paranorman for the weekend (4.9M). A walk among the tombstones is plummeting (likely a 60-70% drop)
