Posted January 12, 201411 yr A top 50. This was shown on MTV yesterday, and given that it featured Avicii-ICBTO & Lana Del Rey-SS, it is pretty recent. I estimate sales are up to 30/11 or 7/12. I will transcribe the sales figures if someone else hasn't already done so.
January 12, 201411 yr These are always fun as different lists seem to have different ideas of what 'dance' actually is. Especially since 2009 when R&B and dance merged, would you count acts like Lady Gaga and Pitbull as 'dance'? Ditto the 1990s with the likes of Aqua, Ace of Base and Cher. First two for me I'd definitely put as pop and the third's a bit of a grey area.

January 12, 201411 yr Yeah, see it really hurts me to think of any of those top 3 as dance anthems :P They're cheesy pop tracks destined to be played at wedding parties and school discos, in the same way 'Barbie Girl' isn't a dance anthem. They're considered 'dance' simply because they have a stronger beat than those did a few years ago. But then I consider 'Titanium' and 'Wake Me Up' as legit, and there's a lot in there I really couldn't make up my mind about. If we cut out anything made after 2008, we'd only have this list: 50 - Kid Cudi v Crookers - Day N Nite - 15/11/08 - 450 36 - Darude - Sandstorm - 24/06/00 - 520 35 - Modjo - Lady (Hear Me Tonight) - 16/09/00 - 530 33 - Eric Prydz - Call On Me - 25/09/04 - 530 29 - Basshunter ft DJ Mental - Now You're Gone - 08/12/07 - 580 27 - DJ Sammy - Heaven - 09/11/02 - 610 24 - Spiller - Groovejet - 26/08/00 - 620 20 - Fragma - Toca's Miracle - 22/04/00 - 670 15 - Sonique - It Feels So Good - 03/06/00 - 700 12 - Elvis v JXL - A Little Less Conversation - 07/05/05 - 810 (somewhat odd dates there actually as Elvis was released three years earlier (tho re-issued in '05) and I'm sure Kid Cudi didn't come out until January 09?) I'm just about ok with classifying all of those as dance. Now You're Gone and Heaven are a little cheesy but comparing it to the pop of their time they sound completely different so much more easily classifiable. From 2009 it starts to get really confusing, and makes me wonder in, say, 1984 if the likes of 'Relax' and 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go' were seen as dance tracks at the time?
January 12, 201411 yr I see "Toca's Miracle" s doing it's usual yo-yo sales wise. The OCC just can't make its mind up about it after leaving it out of the top 150 best sellers of the 21st century in May 2012.
January 12, 201411 yr 'Give Me Everything' very close to the million mark then. 'Sandstorm' has sold more than I thought it would have done. Must be a pretty good trickle seller I guess.
January 12, 201411 yr Weird to think Sexy and I Know It and Give Me Everything have sold more than La La La (even if this a month or so out of date). I can't believe Pitbull and Ne-Yo are going to have a million-seller soon. :drama: And LMFAO will have two. Nice to see Feel the Love and We No Speak Americano close to the top 10. January 12, 201411 yr Completely fail to see how 'La La La' qualifies for this, kind of sticks out like a sore thumb. 'Sweat' (#25) is completely forgotten now isn't it? I certainly forgot all about its existence.
January 12, 201411 yr Completely fail to see how 'La La La' qualifies for this, kind of sticks out like a sore thumb. La La La is 100% a dance song. It is in the tradition of a fair few 90s dance songs for a start.

I certainly forgot all about its existence. I can understand La La La, since it's not pure R&B, it sounds like it has influences from a lot of other genres. Yeah, Sweat is completely forgotten now, although it was one of my favourites of the millions of identical dance songs we had in 2011 (Beautiful People was another, but that has also become forgotten). I don't even understand how it sold so much at the time, since it had very little airplay for how much it sold. To be honest, most of the songs on the list are very forgotten. Only a few like Call On Me, Heaven, Bonkers, etc. have stood the test of time. Edited January 12, 201411 yr by Eric_Blob
January 12, 201411 yr As much as I love La La La I dont see why it's here when the likes of Earthquake is missing.
January 12, 201411 yr La La La is 100% a dance song. It is in the tradition of a fair few 90s dance songs for a start. Maybe a "dance song" but a "dance anthem"? I can't see that it's very anthemic at all (not to say it's not good, just not what I would think of as an "anthem") Edited January 12, 201411 yr by fchd

January 12, 201411 yr How is We Found Love not a dance song   It's "dance-pop" rather than dance, same with Only Girl, SOS, Don't Stop the Music, Disturbia, etc. I think if they put one on the list, they should all be tbh.
