It's quite topical as Zedd's 'Stay The Night' is tipped to be the next UK #1, yet his song 'Clarity' from last year could only reach #29, yet it feels so much bigger than a #29 hit - but I think R1 only B-listed it , so it didn't reach its full potential in my opinion.

What other songs do you think could've been big hits instead of low peakers with a little more promotion. M83's 'Midnight City' is another example of this, it gets a lot of trickle sales these days which suggests it had potential to do better than a #34 peak. (but in that case I think it did get A-listed and majorly loved on R1 but not so much on commercial radio)

Lily Allen - Hard Out Here

#9 is hardly bad but it didn't hang around long at all. If only they'd sorted out a proper radio edit and a clean version of the video...

I think the obvious one currently is Gaga's 'Do What U Want', a low top 10 peak and a 'minor hit' saleswise and it didn't do much in the US but if handled properly and with a video released in early December could have got a much higher peak and probably at least 600k sales here. Shame.

Asaf Avidan 'One Day / Reckoning Song'

Oh yes definitely this one. I think Radio 1 took it off the playlist just as it was starting to take off :(

Agree with Dan, it's just completely baffling how Clarity only got #29!

Shakira probably missed a #1, or at least a huge hit, with Loca. But they wasn't even properly released here so doesn't exactly fit into this thread.

The Saturdays Feat Flo Rida - Higher.

It would have been a certain number one had it been released before the album.

Or might even have done better if it hadn't had Flo-Rida on it
Or might even have done better if it hadn't had Flo-Rida on it

Which explains why it only got as high as #22 before the release of the Flo Rida version...

+1

I also feel 'Marry the Night' would have been huge as a 4th single in the UK also, not a 5th single after a wrong choice which killed the campaign's last momentum. 'You And I' should have been a US-only single.

Agree

I loved You And I, really showcased Gaga's power and her ability, epic live, but it is really a playing to the gallery song, not that radio friendly and commercially appealing, but still love it

SOME MORE ^.^

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Home

Capital Cities - Safe & Sound

Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks

The Vaccines - If You Wanna

+ a few songs that were never actually 'hits' at all over here, but probably could've been with more support:

Swiss Lips - U Got The Power - EP went top 200 on pre-orders after a few R1 plays, but got snubbed from the playlist and did nothing upon release :(

Major Lazer - Watch Out For This (Bumaye) - a fairly big hit in some european countries, think this had at least some minor hit potential!

Lene Marlin - Unforgivable sinner

Britney Spears - Till the world ends

Michelle Branch - All you wanted

Birdy - Skinny love

You Me At Six feat. Chiddy - Rescue me

Shakira feat. Freshlyground - Waka waka (This time for Africa)

Birdy - Skinny love

Seriously? It did have a low peak, but it's sold over 500k.

I do agree with you on 'Waka Waka' and 'Till The World Ends', especially the former it was MASSIVE everywhere in Europe except the UK. We could add Michel Telo's 'Ai Se Eu Te Pego' and Stromae's 'Alors on Danse' to the list too based on that criteria but they were never going to be really big because of the language barrier.

There was actually an English version of Ai, se eu te pego! It didn't quite have the same appeal though, I don't know if it was just because I got used to the Portugese version but it wasn't great. They didn't realease it afaik though.

Snow Patrol - Set the fire to the third bar

Badly Drawn Boy - Once Around the Block

Marry the Night should have been the FIRST single off Born this Way.

Set Fire to the Third Bar was never going to do that well despite it being one of the best singles of the decade.

IT's "Set The Fire To The Third Bar"

Semantics yes, but a very different command. I have the CD Single - The B-side is "Chasing Cars" lol.

The difference between could of and should of I suppose
