An excellent cover indeed. Kirsty MacColl, of course, was a songwriter herself as was her father Ewan. The best known version of his best known song has to be Roberta Flack's version of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

The song featured in Clint Eastwood's brilliant debut directorial/starring movie Play Misty For Me. The ultimate psycho bunny-boiler (Jessica Walter's fab performance) rings in to Eastwood's radio DJ asking for Johnny Mathis' Misty again and again. The best version of this song, now largely forgotten, is a country gem..

^'Country gem', you say? ^_^

The Ray Stevens version of Misty is certainly not forgotten by me. Anyway, from Dolly Parton it is a logical move to Hello Dolly performed here by the one and only Louis Armstrong

Louis did the Bond immediately after the best Bond theme by Nancy Sinatra. Nancy's had a stunning catalogue of work with Lee Hazelwood of which this is just one spine-tingler...

Some Velvet Morning

Nancy Sinatra was the daughter of a famous father. On the same theme, Liza Minelli was the daughter of a famous father (Vicente) and an even more famous mother (Judy Garland). I could have used that to go to Toto but instead here is Liza with a Z accompanied by the Pet Shop Boys

Pet Shop Boys featured Neil Tennant, here's a rare non-PSB appearance for him guest-starring on this epic (and dare I say underrated?) 1992 Electronic classic.

Ah, plenty choice from the collective back catalogue of Electronic's members...but I'll go back to one of the very earliest. Here's Electronic's Barney Sumner way back in 1979 with Joy Division and the shimmering, awe-inspiring 'Transmission'.

Another name for a transmission is a broadcast. Here's another Manchester band with a song about a broadcast,

well Prince has already gone, so When Doves Cry is out (sob!), instead Doves did a marvellous Black and White Town, which reminds me of all the kids in school assembly trying to sing a reggae version of the school assemble fave, thanks to the hit chart version:

Black And White by Greyhound

great pants

Adamski's dog Dis (a, erm, whippet greyhound / Jack Russell cross) used to appear in all his early videos, so watch out for Dis (with Adamski and Seal) in the classic 'Killer'

Does anyone know this song? It's truly beautiful, don't know much about her though...

Is this in the right thread? If so, what is the link?

If not then someone can move it to its own thread. I'll be going out soon so somebody else will have to do it or it will have to wait until later.

From Martha's Harbour to Martha & THe Vandellas

Martha & The Vandellas are perhaps best known for their version of "Dancing in the Street". Another contemporary band also released a version of that song, The Mamas & The Papas -

the big number one version of Dancing In The Street was by 2 legends. Here's one of them doing something classic, it speaks to me, cos on Saturday, me, John was dancing to Bowie..

Oops, cancel that one, Bowie has already gone (with Queen, and I applied that rule to Prince in a duet. Doh!) so the other half of that duet is Mick Jagger

Paint It Black, Rolling Stones

To keep the link with Brian Eno ( a fab track I don't know) Brian Jones was of course guitarist in the band at that time. Brian, meet Brian...

Sorry!

Eno was of course in Roxy Music, but not any of the tracks you might expect, no it's a brilliant pop single not usually thought of...

Roxy Music's Eno years were certainly their best ones so I thought we'd look to their 1972 self titled effort for inspiration as it quite handily gives me the chance to point out that one of my favourite bands named themselves after track 2 of said album... and here they are with their biggest hit, the #42 SMASH from 2005:
