77. IF YOU BUY THIS RECORD YOUR LIFE WILL BE BETTER- The Tamperer Featuring Maya (280,000)

http://i61.tinypic.com/5np668.jpg

YEAR: 1998

PEAK POSITION: 3

Funny enough I recall being in a club sometime in the summer of 98 and hearing “Feel It” and commenting to a friend how similar the beat was to “Material Girl” and low and behold the next single did just the trick. Anyway more of the same from the Tamperer in late 98 and as with so many dance acts it was a tale of diminishing returns.

I bought this song and my life got worse, so I went back to the shop and asked for a refund

74. TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART- Nicki French (286,000)

YEAR: 1995

PEAK POSITION: 5

Bonnie Tyler was apparently none too happy with this version though Steinman gave his blessing, yet for a while it looked as though French’s version of the 1983 classic didn’t look like it was gonna make it. Peaking at No 54 in 1994 it was remixed and re-issued in a slow January market and suddenly took off, so much in fact that it even went to No 2 in the US!

73. THE BOMB (THESE SOUNDS FALL INTO MY HEAD)- The Bucketheads (286,000)

YEAR: 1995

Pseudonym for Kenny Gonzalez (one half of remix team Masters At Work) and sampling Chicago’s “Street Player” this was one of two singles released under the Bucketheads moniker. The same sample later surfaced on Pitbull’s “I Know You Want Me” in case you wondered.

72. PROFESSIONAL WIDOW (IT’S GOTTA BE BIG)- Tori Amos (290,000)

YEAR: 1997

PEAK POSITION: 1

Ah the magic of a remix. Originally part of a double A side in 1996 (when it made No 20) with “Hey Jupiter” it was in and out of the charts before many noticed it. However it was a big club hit in the states in late 96 and was lifted by the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels for their remix of “People Hold On” with original vocalist Lisa Stansfield which started to get airplay in the UK.

The track was re-released in the January slump in 1997 and debuted at No 2 and was in the unusual position of actually looking like it was going to be trumped to the top by that same Dirty Rotten Scoundrels track which was released the week after. Natural order was resumed by the Sunday when Amos duly claimed her sole chart topper.

Tori. I enjoy that version, but the original "Professional Widow" is better.

"The Bomb" is still incredible.

Unbelievable to think of all of the amazing British artists that have never cracked the US, yet Nicki French got a #2 there!?!
On face value I dont like the remix (or the original, for that matter) of Professional Widow but I enjoy listening to it because it brings me back to the time when my Tori was number 1!

71. LA PRIMAVERA- Sash! (291,000)

http://i57.tinypic.com/rvawxv.jpg

YEAR: 1998

PEAK POSITION: 3

A fourth release from Sash! and a 4th top 3 hit, furthermore they became the first act to have hits in four different languages (English/ Spanish/ French/ Italian). As lead track from his second album it surprised some by peaking lower than the previous three releases but he wasn’t quite a spent force yet!...

70. THERE’S NOTHING I WON’T DO- JX (293,000)

YEAR: 1996

PEAK POSITION: 4

Or Jake Williams as he is otherwise known, JX had 4 top 20 hits in the 90s none bigger than this track which features the vocals of Sheena who later surfaced on Michael Gray’s “The Weekend” in 2004. Incidentally despite two releases “Son Of A Gun” still fails to make this list.

"La Primavera" is brilliant... so atmospheric! :D

The JX song is wonderful too.

69.I WANT TO BE A HIPPY- Technohead (296,000)

YEAR: 1996

PEAK POSITION: 6

Hippies who love techno- that’s a recipe for success surely? So Technohead proved when this track spent 6 weeks in the top 10 despite not making the top 5. The band had many previous incarnation including a top 20 hit in 1990 as Tricky Disco.

Stunning double there. La Chariots Of Fire Primavera is really uplifting, all of his best material was released in 1998 for me. Mysterious Times and Move Mania were similarly brilliant.

And the JX song is an absolute classic

'I Love You Baby' is such a great oldskool anthem!

'La Primavera' is one of Sash's most underrated hits, but always sounds good when you hear it. Also lovin' Tori Amos too. That remix is just immense!

As for 'I Wanna Be A Hippy'..........

That JX song is  Only discovered it last year but wow - one of the best that the 90s has to offer!

And I didn't realise the vocalist is the same as the 'The Weekend' singer. That song is an underrated classic!

I'm not sure if it was mentioned earlier but The Smurfs - I've Got A Little Puppy was based on Technohead's - I Want To Be A Hippy. :)

Some fantastic tunes here so far! Looking forward to seeing what else is still to come...

Funny that I Wanna Be a Hippy should make it here, as I heard it for the first time ever yesterday on NOW 33... interesting to say the least.

Love La Primavera.

The first 29 seconds of There's Nothing I Wont Do are wonderful.

That JX song is  Only discovered it last year but wow - one of the best that the 90s has to offer!

And I didn't realise the vocalist is the same as the 'The Weekend' singer. That song is an underrated classic!

Have you heard "Son Of A Gun"? It's even better!
