I don't think rap will ever go away from the charts tbh. But even that evolves and changes over time. For example, the popular hip hop music of today is very different to 10 years ago. In the mid-00s were was loads of crunk music, today it's mainly trap music, or the Rack City-sounding stuff.

Call me old-fashioned, but I still prefer songs to be sung, rather than spoken. ;)

It's nice to invest in an artist. If you really enjoy their single(s) or their album, you're going to want to hear more. If you like their certain style and their talent, you do want to hear what else they can produce. Yes you can say they don't need to be successful to continue producing music, but the more successful they are, the more money they have to produce the music that they actually want to produce.

Completely agree. :D

But I feel a lot of people are guilty of backing their favourite artist to get to No.1 regardless of their material being good or not.

But anyway, on a more relevant note, one of the things that really rubs me up the wrong way is some member's comments on dance acts getting to No.1.

"Oh, another faceless dance act at No.1" ect ect...

There's a fraction of people that would sigh at a dance act being No.1 in the charts purely on the fact that they're not considered "superstar status" ala Katy Perry, Rihanna, Beyonce ect.

I don't want to scroll down the charts and just see the above names, I want to see good songs.

as long as the songs are good, it matters not how 'anonymous' or unknown the artist is (or whether they score any future hits). having the chart be dominated by Katy Perry, One Direction, Calvin Harris, Avicii etc. every month would just be dull

Just because he has recently had two consecutive releases get to No.1, I'd hardly say he can get to No.1 with "anything".

I'd say he's been unlucky quite a few times actually, and has narrowly missed the top spot four times has he not?

I guess his label have got really good at choosing the weeks with less competition and to allow pre-orders to build up.

Mind you, I think all labels co-ordinate the weeks to grab a #1 in this day and age.

Now you're just being unreasonable, poor spoken word artists. Good thing rap is a style of singing as I'd be AGHAST if you were saying you don't like rapping :)

As for the actual topic at hand, I largely agree with JAY17 that what matters is the actual music is good, having well-known / long-lasting artists makes absolutely no difference. Of course I support the artists I like but that's just because I generally like their music, I'd easily take a great song from a completely unknown artist (or an artist I usually dislike for that matter) doing well over an average one by an artist I like.

I feel like this post was still going off on a bit of a tangent from the topic anyway actually but still ~

I don't regard rapping as *any* kind of singing...

and let's not forget that ages ago Avicii and Calvin Harris were considered 'faceless dance acts' and people thought Katy Perry would be a one-hit wonder. Just goes to show that people should be given a chance no matter how unknown they are or how much hit potential people think they have. Investing in an artist is all good (and I am a big fan of certain artists) but I do love it when someone comes out of nowhere and releases a fabulous song (Route 94 and Mr Probz being this year's examples)

I don't think any one thought Katy Perry was ever going to be a one-hit wonder - we had all heard "Hot 'n' Cold" before "I Kissed A Girl" took off here for example.

I like some sort of balance between styles in the chart, and some sort of balance between new and experienced acts too. I think the pendulum has gone a little too far in the Dance direction and the newcomer direction for me at the moment, but give it some time, I'm sure things will change soon-ish

I also think some of the "faceless dance acts" will manage to carve out a career that spans more than one single. Duke Dumont has already done so, Sigma probably will and the same for Route 94

I thought Katy Perry would be a one hit wonder and it's been mentioned several times by several members.

Well you're definitely wrong on that one :P. There was a recent thread about acts people thought would be one-hit wonders and Katy Perry was the most mentioned name.

I thought Katy Perry would be a one hit wonder as her first song primarily relied on a gimmick, then I heard Hot N Cold and instantly realised I was wrong.

Yeah I think it was pretty widely predicted that Katy was going to be a one hit wonder and I don't blame people for thinking so, 'I Kissed A Girl' is a pretty horrible gimmicky song and the entire concept of it screamed one hit wonder, but luckily she proved with nearly every single she's released since that she's capable of much better.

I think Rihanna was also not expected to last much beyond her first album (probably especially after her debut album barely went top 40).
