I wouldn't go that far, but definitely rated far more highly than I think it should be. I didn't care for any of the new Batman trilogy though, really, so I guess I'm just BLIND to what makes it all so good.

Wow can't believe that lion from Lion King, and the cartoon villians beat Norman Bates and Michael Myers, but fantastic rate though and great commentary on the results can't wait to see whose #1

10. The Wicked Witch of the West (The Wizard of Oz) (8) (More 9.5's)

http://mundabor.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/wicked-witch.jpg

Originally Portrayed by: Margaret Hamilton

"Just try and stay out of my way, just try"

Narrowly starting us off in the top 10 is an oldie, although not quite the oldest villain in the top 10. There have many depictions of evil witches in the Oz series, but none quite as popular as Hamilton's take on it. Seeming like a stereotype now, it is again worth noting that at the time, this portrayal was not as well established and so would've been fairly notorious to audiences at the time. On a personal take, I found she was too easy to defeat (Water? Really) But even if she's tame by today's standards, she's still pretty merciless to poor old Dorothy and her friends, was just an accident after all...

09. The Joker (The Dark Knight) (8) (More 11s)

Portrayed by (Dark Knight only): Heath Ledger

"You have nothing to threaten me with. Nothing to do with all your strength"

(I could've selected so many quotes here, but this one feels the most reflective.)

Shock? I'd say so. I never had a great idea who would win this, but I probably would've said him if I had too. Not so (although without the one -1 he received, he would've been 2nd which just shows how every point counts!). I am rather sad as he is, for me, the perfect picture of a villain. Not moved by money, power or anything, just a desire to cause trouble and watch the world burn and laugh at it's expense. He is the perfect opposition to the ever conflicted Batman and though he may not live to cause more havoc at the end of the film, he winds Batman round his finger right up until his last words.

Of course the character in the film was hardly new - he is by far the most popular villain in the Batman comic book and film franchise and it's easy to see why. Just like Batman is a superhero like no other, the Joker is a supervillain like no other. Portrayed many times, Heath Ledger's 2008 portrayal, his penultimate role in a film before his tragic death, reinvented him and got him exactly right, so much so that he won a posthumous Oscar.

08. Lord Voldemort (Harry Potter) (8.03)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a3/Lordvoldemort.jpg

Portrayed by: Ralph Fiennes

"There is no good and evil. There is only power, and those too weak to seek it"

One of just three characters that was recognised by everyone, guess you could say that benefitted it but it's probably like that anyway. Harry Potter's main antagonist has become renowned in the world of literature and film, slightly stereotypical of a villain he may be, he is still the whole package. Devoting his whole life to killing a boy who survived his curse and stopping at nothing until the wizarding world is pure of blood and Muggle borns, so only the elite as controlled by him can rule, which proves quite a nice parallel with Nazi Germany, linking Ralph Fiennes' two roles on this list.

He does lose points for the scare factor though because of this:

07. Dracula (1931) (8.04)

http://serendipity3864.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/draculalagosi.jpg

Originally portrayed by: Bela Lugosi

"Listen to them. Children of the night. What music *they* make"

I alas haven't seen this film yet, but have read the book and all.The character itself as invented by Bram Stoker of course needs no introduction and will always be prevalent in both modern perception of vampires and Dracula as a villain in any form. Seemingly charming and intelligent on the outside with a few perhaps strange habits, and a dark, dangerous being once his true intentions have been revealed. Many actors have played him in the subsequent film adaptations, but it is Lugosi's performance, in every way, that painted the concept of Dracula that became long ingrained in popular culture. Think of a stereotypical vampire, the picture you have will have more than likely been influenced by Lugosi's portrayal.

06. Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare on Elm Street) (8.19)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/44/Freddy_Krueger.JPG

Originally portrayed by: Robert Englund

"THIS is God"

How would it feel to be killed in a place only you know and be powerless to do anything about it as you realise you are not conscious at the time? Dreams can get bad sometimes and Freddy (originally at least) represented the true fears that could come in your sleep. Clad in a working class uniform, a deformed face, a rather terrifying scythed glove and a seething vengeance to attack the children that were responsible for his mortal death in their dreams, he was a slasher villain with a difference. The slightly comedic personality he had was alas overemphasised and soon he lost the fear factor and became a bit of a joke, but for the first film alone, he's worthy of this placing.

Shocked to see The Joker didn't run away with this :o

Voldemort is awful though...

05. Annie Wilkes (Misery) (8.55)

http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120918173431/villains/images/b/bb/Annie_Wilkes.jpg

Portrayed by: Kathy Bates

"I am your number one fan. There is nothing to worry about. You are going to be just fine. I am your number one fan"

Never have untruer words been spoken to poor Paul Sheldon as he wakes up after a car accident in the care of Annie Wilkes. An utter masterclass of a performance by Kathy Bates took this already quite terrifying prospect of a character in Stephen King's novel and exemplified it. Deranged, obsessive and a tendency to react quite harshly if Paul dares defy her whilst in her care, such as breaking his foot with a hammer so he can't get up again, yet the love she feels for him and secret vulnerability is portrayed all to well here too. Insane and terrifying, she is another nurse you wouldn't really want to be in the care of.

04. HAL 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey) (8.56)

"I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that"

Voiced by: Douglas Rain

For me, this was a real shock, but a wonderful one at that. Just 8/14 people knew who he was but every one of those scores were very strong and Hal was even looking like a shock winner contender at one point. For those that don't know, HAL is the computer system that controls the Discovery One spacecrafts, programmed to do whatever it can to complete it's mission, and it doesn't take too kindly to being disconnected. Kubrick's extremely atmospheric approach in the film only serves to emphasise the unsettling feel of this computer system right from the start and the visual representation and the red camera eye and calm conversational approach when talking in any situation make it just as creepy. Hal is definitely a representation of the worst we can encounter in a man vs machine war and the perfect picture of a true cold heart.

03. Darth Vader (Star Wars) (8.60)

Portrayed by: David Prowse

Voiced by: James Earl Jones

"Only your hatred can destroy me"

Someone I thought would've won this when it was clear the Joker wasn't gonna manage it. A definite icon as a character let alone a villain, the constant parodies and Hayden Christensen related woes have undermined him over the years, so it's worth just focusing on his original portrayal. When he first came onto screens, this was a ruthless cyborg that had the whole package as a villain - a ruthless dictatorial cyborg with an utter lack of any emotion or humanity whatsoever, as the films went on, it became clear that he was a human behind that mask, but in some cases, that made him even worse. He does completely redeem himself by the end of the sixth film which is a rarity amongst this list and could take away from your enjoyment of him or not. For sure one of the most iconic and quotable characters in popular culture, even if you haven't seen the films

Which leaves us with a top 2 of Cruella De Vil & Hannibal Lecter, who will come out on top?

Edited by Chez Wombat

Cruella to snatch that win please, one of the best villains *.*

no doubt it'll be the other one though

02. Cruella De Vil (101 Dalmatians) (8.64)

http://bcgavel.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/cruella-deville.jpg

Originally voiced by: Betty Lou Gerson

"Blast this wretched, wretched pen!"

Well, I don't know if she's worth SECOND, but definitely one of the most memorable and even charismatic Disney villains. Glenn Close does a great job with her in the otherwise quite bad 2000 adaptation but really it was all about the 1956 original. A dog hating, selfish and downright terrifying (and in BuzzLingo terms, Fabulous indeed) woman who cares nothing more for dogs than to get their fur and kill them afterwards. Upper class snobbery, cruelty and spite all in one.

01. Hannibal Lecter (The Silence of the Lambs) (8.95)

http://www.thewrap.com/sites/default/files/hanniballecter.jpg

Portrayed by (in film): Anthony Hopkins

"A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti"

Winning quite convincingly in the end is everyone's favourite cannibal, who AFI named the best movie villain in their 2003 poll. Played many times in different mediums, it was Hopkins' performance in 1981 that ingrained the character into public consciousness. He isn't your ordinary psychopath, possibly one of the most intelligent and deep film villains ever, in the film, he sees right through trainee agent Clarice when they first lay eyes on each other and though he seems to be helping the law and in captivity, he is far beyond the black and white criminal. Hopkins brilliantly brings out his cunning and conniving character whilst maintaining that air of fear and unpredictability which makes us feel almost as unnerved as poor Clarice, his cold stare is equally unpredictable - he weakens who he talks to with his mind, he's not just concerned about eating them. Recognized everywhere as an icon, mysterious, dangerous and...quite a stomach, Hannibal is a thoroughly worthy winner of this rate in my eyes and probably many others.

Yeesh, that took a while, I'll post a full list later tonight.

And that would be it, thanks very much all for rating, sorry for the slightly rushed results but I thought there was no point dragging it out much further.

Oooh very welcomed winner from me! Though i wouldn't have minded any of the top 4 (haven't seen 'Misery').

I feel like maybe Freddy could have walked this easily had it not been for the sequels and everything that came after 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' but 6th with all those gimmicks is still good going.

Thanks for this Chez, a really good idea and i look forward to more in the future :D

I know, there's a shocking amount of classics that I need to catch up on and watch :( Certain films here could be a good start!
