July 22, 201410 yr Loca People might just be my least favourite number 1 ever, certainly of the 21st century.
July 22, 201410 yr Author Jade, I assume you meant "I'll Be Missing You", as I don't think you're quite 31 years old yet. ;) #365. Craig David - Fill Me In 1 week at #1 in 2000 (#31 of 42 for '00) jdcmM9T8vD4 I guess I never fully "got" Craig David. This song especially. He uses such odd enunciation in some parts - like in that entire "So I went in; Then we sat down start kissing..." part. But I will say that Craig has a good voice (very smooth and R&B), especially considering the age he was when this was released. I wouldn't have guessed he was only 18, because this song sounds very.. mature.. I guess you could say. It's definitely not like the teen pop songs that were literally everywhere in 2000. That's what I like about this song. What I don't like is the story. So this song is about this girl next door that's sneaking around her parent's back to be with Craig. The sneaking around behind your parents makes it sound very childish. But then the lyrics go on about drinking liquor and doing sexy things in Jacuzzi. I don't know - it just sounds a bit awkward.
July 22, 201410 yr Author #364. Oasis - Go Let It Out 1 week at #1 in 2000 (#30 of 42 for '00) t-rxYuFOvyg So after making a bunch of overly long somewhat pretentious songs during the "Be Here Now" era, Oasis returned in 2000. I find this to be a bit of return to form for them. I don't really know what this song is on about, but it's decent.
July 22, 201410 yr Author #363. Ke$ha - We R Who We R 1 week at #1 in 2011 (#21 of 30 for '11) mXvmSaE0JXA This video game production. This is a party song, but it also doubles as a "feel good about yourself" anthem! This came out at the same time as "Just The Way You Are", "Firework", "Raise Your Glass", etc (and with "Born This Way" still to come), so it just gets lumped in with that. "We're dancing like we're dumb" is a pretty awful lyric. "Got Jesus on my necklace" isn't much better. This song is very catchy but also very obnoxious to listen to. Just the way she sings everything in this is so grating. The production is too choppy. The background vocals - which is just auto-tune - don't sound very pleasant either. The "DJ turn it up" breakdown is annoying too.
July 22, 201410 yr Author #362. Katy Perry - Roar 2 weeks at #1 in 2013 (#21 of 30 for '13) CevxZvSJLk8 I was not fond of this at all last year. But it has grown on me. I like the piano and percussion beat for some reason (yes, I know, "Brave"), the background "hey"'s work well, and it's undeniably catchy. But it's Katy Perry being her usual gimmicky self. This song is cliche overload (do I even need to list them). It fails to be an inspirational anthem because it's just too cheesy. And Katy just doesn't take herself seriously enough for me to take the message seriously. The video especially; where she just takes every metaphor and makes them literal.
July 22, 201410 yr Author #361. Shaggy - Oh Carolina 2 weeks at #1 in 1993 (#11 of 15 for '93) hYHfh94LfNw Yeah, I had no idea Shaggy existed in 1993 haha. I find the success of Shaggy, still, to this day, so random. The reggae explosion of this time period also seems rather random. I much prefer "Informer" by Snow, which didn't go #1, but we have this instead. I didn't even know this was a cover song until I read the Wikipedia page. It's catchy, but as usual I have no idea what he's saying in this song (other than the words "oh" and "Carolina"). Edited July 22, 201410 yr by n4yr
July 22, 201410 yr I cannot bloody stand 'Roar' for all the reasons you have stated, horrid song. Nothing from Katy this time around has impressed me unfortunately, the best of the bunch has been 'Unconditionally' but that would've failed to stand out on either of her previous albums.

It's catchy, but as usual I have no idea what he's saying in this song (other than the words "oh" and "Carolina"). Love this song! Also, most songs from the 'random reggae explosion' were pretty sweet. Songs like 'Compliments On Your Kiss', 'Baby, I Love Your Way', 'Sweat (A La La La La Long)' etc were absolute scorchers of tunes. Brings me back to my very young childhood days!
July 23, 201410 yr Author #360. Miley Cyrus - We Can't Stop 1 week at #1 in 2013 (#20 of 30 for '13) LrUvu1mlWco Hmm. I don't think enough time has passed for me to properly judge this yet. I didn't like this at all in 2013. Mostly because it was tainted by Miley's persona; which felt entirely fake and forced and cringe worthy to me. She just screamed desperate for attention. This song, and video, especially. Not mention the subject matter in this song doesn't feel believable at all coming from her. The drug references feel awkward. I just have to laugh at the line "To my home girls here with the big butts". I hate the off key "yeaaaaah" breakdown. But, this has since grown on me. And listening now, this isn't THAT bad (if I can just block out of my mind everything I dislike about her.) The production is good. And I'd probably like this more if I was drunk. July 23, 201410 yr Author #359. Black Legend - You See The Trouble With Me 1 week at #1 in 2000 (#29 of 42 for '00) GJxwfWn2yjA This, of course, samples a Barry White song. At first, I found this to be a pretty pointless dance song that went nowhere. The wobble sounds are cool, though, and I like the audience cheering. It just works for some reason. Listening now, it still doesn't go anywhere. But I like the production.
July 23, 201410 yr Author #358. Tinchy Stryder feat. N-Dubz - Number 1 3 weeks at #1 in 2009 (#21 of 32 for '09) LJsVDH-3b3Y I imagine I would've hated this in 2009. But my UK chart following days didn't begin for another year. What I find interesting about 2009 is that there seems to be a lot of British rappers getting #1's (and big hits in general.) Besides a few acts, like So Soild Crew, they never seemed to be much of a chart force up until this time period. From my observations, anyway. Tinchy was one of the big ones to emerge in 2009. He got a top 3 hit with Taio Cruz early on in that year, and then went #1 with this. An aptly titled song, it's the only #1 hit to be called "number one." It's a song about a relationship transforming from being something casual to something serious. This song isn't as bad as it seems, but I wouldn't say I love it or anything. I like the production and there is a strong chorus. And Dappy manages to not be overly irritating (but I could still do without him on this song). Edited July 23, 201410 yr by n4yr
July 23, 201410 yr Author #357. Alexandra Burke feat. Laza Morgan - Start Without You 2 weeks at #1 in 2010 (#19 of 34 for '10) 0NWklpJYGTU Ugh, another video I think that's blocked in my country. This is very.. Kat Deluna. Though it is produced by RedOne. Which instantly makes me like this cause I've always loved his productions for some reason. This song is very catchy, but the chorus is basically a nursery rhyme.
July 23, 201410 yr Author #356. Leona Lewis - A Moment Like This 4 weeks at #1 in 2006 / 2007 (#15 of 24 for '06) sxbX-z5-QHs The beginning of this reminds me of Mariah Carey's "Without You." Simon shows his obsession of reusing tracks here. This was Kelly Clarkson's winner's single on American Idol, and 4 years later it was used as Leona's. Leona was praised for her voice on X Factor, so she gets a winner's single where she can showcase it. And she does just that. This song is cheesy as anything, but Leona does an incredible job singing it. Especially *that* note.
July 23, 201410 yr 'Number 1' completely blindsided me at the time - truly, it was a record I was expecting to hate but ended up loving. Bit dated 5 years on but still enjoyable
July 24, 201410 yr #359. I agree with you on the audience cheering. It's like they're celebrating the song with the singer! Not a big selling No.1 for 2000 but a great House tune nonetheless!
July 24, 201410 yr Author #355. Mr Oizo - Flat Beat 2 weeks at #1 in 1999 (#21 of 35 for '99) qmsbP13xu6k I'm never quite sure if I like this or not. It's pretty innovative and sounds way ahead of its time, though, with the whole wobble sound going on. And it's pretty rare to see an instrumental #1 in my lifetime. But this gets a little annoyingly repetitive after a while.
July 24, 201410 yr Author #354. Storm Queen - Look Right Through (MK Remix) 1 week at #1 in 2013 (#19 of 30 for '13) 9c3EQhtf9-U This never sounded like a #1 to me last year. I was kinda surprised when it got there. And a little bit annoyed because it was the same week when "Move" was released. Anyway. I really like the cymbal that's used throughout; it flows with the beat and adds a certain something. And it reminds me of that Black Legend song a bit. But then, this song just goes nowhere. It's still a good song, but there's many other house hits from the past year or so that I'd rather listen to. Edited July 24, 201410 yr by n4yr
July 24, 201410 yr Author #353. Britney Spears - Born To Make You Happy 1 week at #1 in 2000 (#28 of 42 for '00) Yy5cKX4jBkQ What a random #1 for Britney. The UK got this as her 4th single, while North America got the clunky-titled "From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart." I'm not a big fan of Britney's debut album, but this is one of the better songs on it. It uses the typical Max Martin sound that she was associated with at the time. This song is about one of Britney's failed relationships, and she feels she was the perfect girl for her ex, and she's trying to find a way to get over him. But I find the statement that "I was born to make you happy" a bit.. over the top.
July 24, 201410 yr Author #352. Roll Deep - Green Light 1 week at #1 in 2010 (#18 of 34 for '10) rmJayeZzBZQ Yeah, this is the exact same song as "Good Times", but I like this one better. But oh my, this song has some of the worst lyrics I've ever heard. So this entire song is about wanting this girl to go all the way with him. The green light is the signal for him to go. But lucky for us, the traffic light metaphor doesn't end there! There's other lines like "I follow the signs"; "Stop! Take a look, left and right; Is it clear for me to go?"; "she flashed red, amber, green" etc. If that isn't bad enough, he then wants to light her up like a Christmas tree (I don't even know what to say about that part.) And of course the very profoundly written "That time when I saw ya, I thought wow." This makes will.i.am sound like Shakespeare. But these awful lyrics sort of make this a guilty pleasure. And it's another catchy chorus, like "Good Times."
