I saw something ridiculous earlier suggesting Dr Who was set to be axed because of low viewing figures. I wouldn't consider falling just 30,000 short of X Factor to fit within my definition of "low viewing figures". Besides, I'm sure overseas sales and sales of merchandise cover most of the costs of making the programme.

too right. It's a huge worldwide show. I'm more bemused (and I know so many of you love it!) by Bake-off topping the ratings. Watching someone cook stuff is almost as boring than having to cook stuff - although at least you can have the radio on in the background for that! :P (I am a fan of Mel & Sue though)

The X Factor really is doing poorly. I wonder how its average will compare to The Voice. I think once it's finished it's current contract, it will be gone as once that is up, it'll surely be on around 5 million. If Simon's return has done absolutely nothing for ratings, then nothing will.

Gotham is doing brilliantly for Channel 5 though! I've not seen any of the show but I still hope it manages to keep those numbers.

Christmas Day overnight ratings (top 10):

1. Mrs Brown’s Boys – 7.61 million

2. EastEnders – 7.55 million

3. Strictly Come Dancing – 6.98 million

4. Call the Midwife – 6.83 million

5. Miranda – 6.67 million

6. Coronation Street – 6.62 million

7. Doctor Who – 6.34 million

8. Downton Abbey – 5.84 million

9. The Queen’s speech – 5.71 million

10. Emmerdale – 5.71 million

Bit disappointed Doctor Who only managed over 6 million, but I think I'm more shocked Downton Abbey didn't manage any more than what it did - thought that would have raked viewers in. With Doctor Who being #1 on iPlayer, I think we can expect a major jump in numbers when the finals come in.

I'd like to think Eastenders would have topped the ratings had it not clashed with Downton Abbey. :kink:
ROUGH GUIDE TO UK RATINGS - PRIMETIME:

BBC ONE & ITV

8 million> = Fantastic!

6-8 million = Hit show!

3-6 million = Moderate success

<3 million = Not great...

BBC TWO/CHANNEL FOUR/CHANNEL 5

2 million> = Fantastic!

1-2 million = Hit show/moderate success

<1 million = Not great...

(Note: BBC TWO has the best ratings of these 3, generally around 2 million)

EXTRA CHANNELS

1 million> = Fantastic!

500,000-1 million = Hit show/moderate success

All ratings will be from Barb

Where can I include ITV2? "Extra Channels"?

Yep! Extra channels just means everything apart from the main 5 'terrestrial' channels.

The Queen's Speech was actually the highest rated show of Christmas Day with the BBC and ITV showings combined! :o

Does BARB include iPlayer in their final ratings? I was under the impression they didn't.

I'm not sure if they do, but L+7 figures are released (for Doctor Who anyway, haven't a clue about other shows, but I'm assuming they will) about a month or so after broadcast.

I think they do if it's on the same night or something. I didn't think they did but I read something that implied that they do now.

Ah right, thanks to both! I knew BARB wouldn't include all iPlayer views if they did any as final figures would be significantly up from the overnights and both BBC and ITV's iPlayers show catch-ups from a month ago whilst BARB's final figures are posted after a couple of weeks.

I'm a bit confused as to why ITV final figures are often down from the overnights - I've noticed this with Corrie and Emmerdale in particular.

BARB include iPlayer viewings up to 7 days later when viewed on a TV only. E.g. if you watched through Virgin or Sky's on demand services.

Secondly, ITV's figures don't include the HD channel for some reason, whereas the others are automatically combined. You can find the ITV HD figures under a separate top 10. They definitely need to fix this though, because we often don't get complete Emmerdale figures.

Because the nation is missing out on those CGI countryside shots!

Will there be a published most-viewed programmes of 2014 list at some point? :D

There was a list published a few days ago although it was, if course, not a final list. However, it was noticeable that X Factor was nowhere to be seen in the top ten. The Bake Off final got the biggest single channel audience although the World Cup final just beat it if you combine the BBC and ITV audiences.

WARNING - contains a spoiler if you still haven't seen the Bake Off final :o

That list looks like it's excluding duplicate episodes of the same programme though? Amazing success for Bake Off though!
