I think the lack of pre-orders on Spotify mean that if you search a song that'll be released soon there will be no results, so you can't get reminded that a certain song is out when it is.

 

For example, if I search for Crazy Stupid Love by Cheryl Cole the only results I get are fake versions.

 

So it'll take time for people to realise that a song that wasn't available for streaming now is, and I'm sure presence on the top 100 would help. I imagine the record companies will find a way to make songs have high first-week streams, like they did with downloads.

 

Prior to pre-orders being a 'thing' though, the UK has been a very 'instant gratification' culture since the mid 90s with songs entering high in the sales charts so it seems odd to me that it's not reflected in people's streaming habits.

 

I expect you're right with your latter point. Songs that are likely to open with 80-90k sales and *could* get the No.1 might be hindered if some other big song is still lingering around and getting '15k' added to its total from streams. So the record companies need to find some sort of way to frontload the streams somehow to ensure maximum first week impact, otherwise a lot of songs are going to miss their only shot at No.1. (Not a bad thing imo but the record companies won't like it). I'm just hoping we don't get a load of Facebook mass streaming campaigns or something :lol: I'm sure we'll get one at Xmas. 'Everyone listen to Pogues/Mariah 10 times this week to get it to Xmas No.1'!

People listen to what's on the charts on Spotify. In the US 'Waves' went Top 20 a few weeks ago despite not selling well because it was high on the worldwide charts, which is the default.

This question was literally asked and answered (to the extent it can be answered) in the last 2 posts...

 

As for the first part I'm pretty sure they just include anything that's in the top 10 as a 'contender' to make it seem like it's an open race when it isn't at all. Note that they've also included Sam Smith, Sia, DJ Fresh, Mr Probz etc.

 

No they genuinely only have the new entries on a Monday but this week have included songs with high amounts of streams(giving All of Mes streaming total at the same time). At any rate next weeks sales commentary will be interesting if the OCC have done their streaming homework!

Yeah that's true although I'm not familiar with the streaming chart apart from a few glances in MW each Friday but surely long held back big returns like Sing were doing well on streaming before the download came out ?
