The End of the World

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/fe/End_of_the_World.jpg

The second story of New Who "only" makes it to #52 here, higher than I expected it actually but I can't complain, fantastic story and a great start to The Doctor and Rose's trips together. The story sees the introduction of familiar faces Cassandra and the Face of Boe. "Familiar faces" is an odd phrase to use here, cause Cassandra barely has a face whereas Boe more than makes up for it. Anyway, The Doctor takes Rose, on her first trip, to a space station in the year 5.5/apple/26, where many different species have gathered to witness planet Earth ending. The space station is however being invaded by tiny robot spiders, later revealed to belong to Cassandra, essentially a human trampoline after so much plastic surgery. I wouldn't say this story is a Who classic by any means but it's a lot of fun with some interesting messages hidden away, through Cassandra's plastic surgery (708 operations, soon to be 709) and Rose's talk with Raffalo.

Utopia

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/0a/Master_Regenerates.jpg

The first of a three part series finale (although technically it wasn't billed as a three part until it aired, where an obvious cliffhanger was left and picked up immediately where Utopia finished in the next episode, The Sound of Drums). The episode sees the return of Captain Jack, where it is revealed for the first time within Doctor Who (by this point one series of Torchwood had aired) that he comes back to life if he is killed, as proven by clinging onto the TARDIS for dear life within the first few minutes. Later on, the trio of The Doctor, Martha and Jack find themselves under threat from the Futurekind, before being saved by a base of people waiting to board a spaceship to a mythical place known as Utopia. The only issue is...the ship won't actually work, despite Professor Yana's best efforts. Of course, The Doctor manages to fix it, just before Professor Yana opens his fobwatch and BOOM, he's The Master. Fun times. Chan, Chantho shoots him in her final moments of life, before The Master steals the TARDIS and regenerates in there, Tho. Excellent story for me and I was gripped throughout, like most of series 3.

I'll be honest, I'm not particularly familiar with this episode, I've seen it about twice, cause I've had no real urge to go back to it. Very shocked it's this high actually, never seemed TOO highly regarded at the time! The episode begins with Amy and Rory realising their childhood friend Mels was actually their daughter, who regenerates into River Song. Fun. They then go to Germany during Hitler's time in power and lock him in a cupboard. Also fun. The rest of the episode involves the Teselecta and that kinda thing.

Vincent and the Doctor

Another episode I'm actually not too familiar with despite enjoying a lot at the time. Vincent and The Doctor sees The Doctor and Amy travel to an art museum in France, where an alien figure is spotted in one of Vincent Van Gogh's paintings. Because of this, they travel back in time to find the story behind it. The episode revolves a lot around Vincent not knowing how good his paintings are and the lifelong impacts they have. The Krafayis creature was just an aside in this episode to pave way for some excellent storytelling and an overall really good episode.

Amy's Choice

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KTJWhtuRLac/S9kwfo7N2hI/AAAAAAAAKSE/AKJOFxrjX7U/s1600/amyschoice1.png

One of my personal favourites from series 5, Amy's Choice sees a different take on a typical Doctor Who episode, with there being two threats in two different worlds, controlled by the Dream Lord, who stated that only one world or the other is real, and they must decide which, or face the consequences in whichever world is real. One world saw Eknodine creatures inside old people prove a threat, another saw the TARDIS plummeting into a freezing cold star. The episode was many written to test the relationships between both Amy and The Doctor, and Amy and Rory. Eventually, The Doctor realises that both worlds are a dream, induced by psychic pollen in the TARDIS. Fabulous episode and something very different, done well IMO. Gutted it's this low!

'Vincent and the Doctor' is an absolute GEM. The scene at the end where they take Vincent to the museum just makes me cry so much. And 'Amy's Choice' is a lovely one as well.

I just found it hard to warm to the notion of 'The Girl Who Waited' as Amy was still the same person, yes 30+ years of doing nothing and seeing noone obviously drives you insane but surely you wouldn't want to put anyone through that nevermind YOURSELF. Just her dislike to young Amy didn't seem natural, no matter how much she had suffered/younger than she was. It was just a bit forced, nice episode though.

'The God Complex' was really good but had sommuch potential to be MORE, it just felt that there were certain aspects missing which stopped it from becoming a really creepy tale.

'Vincent and the Doctor' is something I never appreciated on first watch because I was prepared for a traditional monster story. With repeated watches though, it is a really good dramatic episode and the gallery scene gets me everytime. (Something

Rose

http://reallylatereviews.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/doctor_who_2005_rose.jpg

And this is the story that brought the show back to our screens in 2005. RTD had apparently been trying to get it back for a long time, and this must have been a very special moment for him. Christopher Eccleston was taking on the challenge of the 9th Doctor - but not only that, a Doctor that would captivate an audience and give it the millions-strong fanbase it still secures today. We also had Billie Piper as Rose Tyler, but even better than that Camille Coduri as JACKIE TYLER *.* The one scene I'll never forget from this episode is when Jackie's about to be killed by the Auton Bride next to a bus and she's just terrified for her life! But yes, the story was about the Doctor and Rose's intrigue with his whole background, but then we had Autons on the loose, breaking out of shop windows and wrecking havoc. I think they were a pretty terrifying villain, particularly when Rose went to see the mysterious and non-existent Wilson with the lottery ticket after closing time. And then at the end of the episode we see Rose abandon Mickey for a life of adventures in time and space, amazing!

The Doctor's Wife

http://media.sfx.co.uk/files/2011/05/150511doctors-wife.png

I love this story a lot, but I do think it's a tad overrated among the fanbase, mainly because it's Neil Gaiman and he's supposedly an almighty god and should be running the show. No. But anyway, onto the great story that it is... Suranne Jones was possibly one of the best, if not the best, guest star they had in series 6. The premise of this episode is basically the Doctor landing in a pocket universe with Amy and Rory, only to find Idris - the TARDIS in human form, as well as Auntie and Uncle, two human-like creatures who have been patching themselves up by using the body parts of Time Lords left behind after House (the main villain of the story) has lured them there. One of the scenes that got to me the most was when the Doctor was exploring the environment and then he found a cupboard full of cubes with Time Lords wondering where they were, etc. Really emotional. The whole mind game thing in the TARDIS with Amy and Rory seemed a bit like a non-interesting secondary plot really, the only good to come out of it was getting to see the old TARDIS interior design. Lovely. And then of course we had Idris dying at the end, I cried. And the only water in the forest is the river.

UGH stop chucking out my favourite episodes! Vincent should have been top 10 at the least. Always leaves me crying and feeling so emotional inside.

Aside from Utopia and Amy's Choice, all the other episodes in that batch are very underwhelming ones. The God Complex, I don't know, I disliked it because it felt like an attempt to try an episode in an enclosed space (often good) but I didn't feel like there was much threat in it, the setting felt distractingly disjointed and abstract and it was quite a poorly constructed story.

Vincent and The Doctor's Wife way too f***ing low.

Complete with a typically brilliant cameo role from Bill Nighy almost stealing the show

Vincent and The Doctor is an amazing episode as is Human Nature and The Family Of Blood. All should of been at least Top 20.

Flesh and Stone

http://ravereader.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/doctor-who-flesh-and-stone_amy-eyes-shut.png

Kicking off the top 40 now (sorry there's been such a delay, had planned to start this again once everybody had had some time to digest the events of series 8, but it just... didn't happen), and Joseph has also been sacked for his poor attempt at 'commentary' in the last section of episodes. Anyway, on with the show. 'Flesh and Stone' is a really good episode, not one of my favourites, but one of the better offerings from series 5 - and a typical Moffat story really. Following on from the cliffhanger at the end of part one of this second story to feature the Weeping Angels (one of Moffat's finest creations to date, or *finest* creation), everybody is in the Byzantium but the Weeping Angels are following close behind. We then get to a forest. The scene I love most in this episode is when Amy's trying to coordinate her way through the forest and the Doctor comes and speaks to her (Amy of course not knowing it's a different version from the one that just left her). And then of course, in terms of continuity, at the end of 'The Wedding of River Song' we have River turning up at Amy and Rory's home telling them that she's just climbed out of the Byzantium (*.*). A few of the complaints for the episode seemed to come from the fact that we actually got to see the Angels move as well. I think I'd have to agree with this comment in some respects, but at the same time it was nice for us to see how they actually operated when nobody could see them, but we as an audience could.

The Impossible Astronaut

http://www.unlimitedricepudding.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/6-1-1.jpg

Falling out and leaving series 6 with no remaining episodes (how DARE all of you!) is 'The Impossible Astronaut' - the opening episode from the series. It starts with the Doctor dying at Lake Silencio by the strike of an anonymous astronaut - whom we would in 'Closing Time' learn that that was River Song, if it wasn't obvious enough for you already going by her conversations in 'Flesh and Stone' and 'The Big Bang'. Anyhow, I absolutely adore this episode, not just because we got to see Amy step up to the plate and shoot the astronaut at the end of the episode (if only she knew it was her daughter she was aiming at...) - one of the ultimate cliffhangers, and not just because we got to see the return of the failed-TARDIS from 'The Lodger', but because the small scenes all added up to make this a rather emotional episode. We have the scene where River and Rory are trying to make their way through the underground tunnels, and before they step through the door to the failed-TARDIS, they share a deep conversation with one another, and that was just a very beautiful moment. One of Moffat's most emotive pieces of script-writing, I'd say. And there's just lots of other little things that add up and make this the perfect introduction to a series by a mile.

The Impossible Astronaut was confusing but done in a good way. It was Day of the Moon that ruined it. Good to see that there are no series 6 episodes left anyway, by far the worst series imo.
I did really enjoy 'The Impossible Astronaut' - definitely one of the strongest episodes from that series.

The End of Time

http://www.giantkillersquid.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/doctorwhoendoftime1.jpg

Dropping out next is David Tennant's swansong - 'The End of Time'. These two episodes, personally, are quite overrated. It had the return of the Master, but that was something that was hyped up a bit too much and didn't really deliver in the end. The whole concept of the 'Master-race' was ridiculous, and just RTD attempting to do something even sillier than he'd done in another series finale to try and wow us (or just take the piss out of us) before he left us in the more-than-capable hands of Moffat. There are parts of this story however that are absolutely brilliant. The scene in the two containers for instance where the Doctor is just far too frightened to let go of his own life in order to save Wilfred Mott's. I've read some articles on Doctor Who fan sites that say this was extremely out of character for David's Doctor and he wouldn't be so selfish, but knowing that your death was pending and you really loved being in the body you're in and that you'd never walk the same way again, or see that body again... until the next multi-Doctor story... would you really want to give it up? And then of course there are the final scenes where he did the rounds and visited Rose, Martha, Mickey, etc. But the one that struck a chord with me the most was when he visited Donna. The moment Sylvia and Wilf realised what the Doctor had done with his time-travelling powers was just beautiful. A truly stunning moment in the history of Who. At the end of the day though, these two episodes could have been so much more and were not a true reflection of how great some of RTD's previous work was.

Asylum of the Daleks

http://britishcalling.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/sites/1/nggallery/dw-the-asylum-of-the-daleks-s7e01/The_Asylum_of_the_Daleks_006.jpg

At #37 it's 'Asylum of the Daleks', the opening episode of series 7 (which now leaves us with only two series 7 episodes standing). This was a great way to re-introduce us to where Amy and Rory were at, and where the Doctor was at, at this point I think. One of the definite highlights from this episode though is that Clara appeared and we had absolutely no idea it was going to happen given Moffat had managed to silence all those who had been to the advanced screening. She was amazing all throughout the episode as well, being sassy and trying it on with Rory. One of the most irritating things about this episode however was the distance and friction between Amy and Rory. It wasn't great to watch, but I guess it was just trying to show the side of relationships that isn't all glitz and glamour - one thing that didn't particularly succeed though. Onto the Daleks though. They were actually quite creepy in this episode - particularly in the scene where Rory first discovered where he was and what he was dealing with, and when Amy was hallucinating. It actually felt like they were to be feared, but then there were parts as well where they just sort of crumbled and weren't that much of a threat at all. The pre-titles sequence to this episode - the part where we see the massive Dalek at the beginning - has to be one of the best we've had though. A stunner. My absolute favourite moment from this episode though is when the Doctor discovers that all along Oswin is a Dalek... That was one of the most crushing and devastating moment. Will forever remain one of my favourite moments / revelations.

The Pandorica Opens

drwho512.jpg

Up next it's the penultimate episode of series 5 - 'The Pandorica Opens', the first of a two part story. This one was absolutely amazing, surprised to see it so high, but I'm glad it is. Not only do we have the return of River Song in this episode, but following on from his erasure from time, Rory makes a return in this episode as a Roman centurion, one slight problem though - Amy doesn't have a clue who he is. But then she does. At the very end of the episode, she remembers that he is her fiancé, but that doesn't go down too well and Rory ends up shooting her, that was probably one of the best towards-the-end-of-the-episode-cliffhangers the show's had - I remember watching at the time and the BBC voice-over said "Karen Gillan reflects on her time as Amy Pond", in a similar vein to Jenna Coleman and Clara, but alas, she was not dead, and she was back fighting fit in 'The Big Bang', the very next episode. River Song was amazing as ever in this episode, first she was Cleopatra, then she was back to her sassy old self - dropping more teasers as to who she was and when we'd find out the answer to that. All in all, a very strong episode.

The Doctor's Daughter

http://www.doctorwhotv.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jenny-doctors-daughter-ship.jpg

So here we have the episode where the Doctor's DNA was stolen from him and it produced offspring in the form of Jenny - technically his daughter. But at the same time, his wife. Georgia and David will probably never live that down. Despite the enormous praise this episode seems to get, I can never fully understand it. Yes, it's a good episode and yes it has its moments, but for me it's an average episode with brilliant moment scattered throughout. To start, we have Jenny dying (not a great way to start, but oh well) - the moment she died it really was sad - but then she came back alive and went out to travel the stars just like her 'father'. I still live in hope that one day she might return in a different incarnation, but the chances of that happening now are next to zero. Then we had the Hath - they were just the cutest. When Martha was out in the swamps with one of them and it drowned, I actually shed a tear. They were harmless, and for one of them to go like that... Why is it always the best characters that die and the AWFUL ones that get away with murder (quite literally in this case!)?

This is an absolutely stunning episode. Let us all just take a moment to realise that 90% or more of us that voted in this gave it the highest score (10), and then we have somebody cramping the style and giving it a -1? Who even are you?! Anyway, on with the show. I absolutely love the conclusion of this episode, so so emotional. We have the Doctor racing through the library to try and save River after realising that she had a screwdriver because her life depended on it. When she sacrificed herself for him, it was a stunning moment. We knew that there was more to come, but just who was she?! It all makes perfect sense now that she, his loving wife, would give her own life to allow him to live out all of the memories that she's already lived. And at the end of the episode we have CAL giving River some friends in the form of her co-dead colleagues after she's been 'saved' to the database. I honestly believe this episode provided us with some of the most beautiful moments Who has ever given us, and the commentary from River towards the end was just really touching. I feel like I've talked about River a lot, but honestly I can't remember what most of the rest of the episode was about other than the Vashta Nerada being a bit of a terrifying threat.

The Name of the Doctor

http://i2.cdnds.net/13/20/618x347/uktv-name-of-the-doctor-new-pictures-21.jpg

This is probably in my top 5 Doctor Who episodes of all time. This was the beginning of the 50th anniversary celebrations, and it was so, so perfect in every single way. Not only did we see Gallifrey again just as the Doctor was about to run away with his TARDIS, but we got to see Clara interacting with several of the Doctor's incarnations. Clara's 'impossible girl' arc was coming to an end - we discovered in this episode that all the different versions of Clara that we had already met and that had died saving the Doctor's life were a result of her entering his personal time-stream to try and save him. All of this was prevented after he entered the time-stream and it collapsed around them so they managed to both escape just in time to head into the adventure that 'The Day of the Doctor' presented. Vastra, Jenny, Strax and River were also back in this episode, and the one scene that always strikes me the most is when Vastra blasts Strax into... nowhere... because they had a minor disagreement. And then we had the Whispermen almost killing each of the Doctor's companions by ripping their hearts from their cores - and all because the Doctor was too selfish and too afraid to tell the Great Intelligence his name - but the day was saved when River opened the tomb. Honestly, words don't describe how amazing I found the whole Clara arc to be, and it was just amazing to see the whole thing justified in a single episode. Was the perfect ending to what was a really great series, and the perfect conclusion to what is, IMO, definitely the best companion arc/storyline there has been!
