August 19, 201410 yr Author Apologise Addicted To Bass Everytime ❤❤ Those are all very nice. Rapture though. Best of the bunch there  Ooh glad to hear you're a fan of those tracks, and YAY at another 'Rapture' lover, absolutely magical song  Everytime is probably my favourite Britney track, it's so beautiful. Ooh tell me about it, gorgeous track, so emotional  Imma get on with the next section soon oops  ^_^ Edited August 19, 201410 yr by Jade
August 20, 201410 yr Author 80. The Neighbourhood - Sweater Weather (2013) GCdwKhTtNNw Ooh I do love a bit of good indie rock. This is a very recent song, yes - but the cut off point was anything in 2014 so of course I'm going to include it. But yeah this has managed to make it this high already even though I don't think it went THAT high on my EOY chart? Well, it's one of those songs that I can never skip even a year later. Anyway, I remember discovering it through following the Billboard Hot 100 and thinking it had an interesting title! But yeah it's sonically LUSH for want of a better word. The production is gorgeous and so chill-out, like the video it kind of makes you want to take a road trip! The vocals are SO smooth and lyrically on the surface it seems quite cute really, but delve a little deeper and this isn't the case at all, it seems like he's confessing that the 'she' he's referring to really isn't the only one in his life. But yeah I enjoy this track so much, really it's a shame that this never quite managed to sneak into the U.K. Top 40! 79. Kylie Minogue - Slow (2003) Omrp4QR_Rpo This may be quite a strange choice for some when she has other songs that are dubbed as classics and are held in higher regard. Well, for me, this may be more subtle than most of her bigs hits - but still manages to have enough of an impact on me. Let's start with my favourite part - the production! She works the synth pop - the rather minimalist production works SO well alongside the sensual vocals that Kylie brings to the table. I especially love when the chorus comes in and there is suddenly more layers of production. I don't know, just like 'Red Blooded Woman' she just makes sensual tracks so enjoyable with her vocal delivery and the production duties are always wonderful - in this case it's rather cool and quite 80's. The video is rather fabulous too! 78. Black Eyed Peas - Hey Mama (2004) rtczBseiAac The Black Eyed Peas make another appearance here, but I believe there's still one more to come after this too. Anyway, 'Hey Mama' is just SO much fun, I can't explain the joy I feel when listening to it. The Black Eyed Peas were SO good from about 2003-2005, and what I love about their stuff is that it is so catchy, feel-good (well maybe apart from 'Where Is the Love?' and 'Shut Up'!) and quite funky as well. This track definitely has all three of those elements and also is very simplistic in meaning, but ultimately a really fun party song. I actually prefer the radio edit as well, it's been edited a bit and will.i.am's vocals sound a bit lower on the chorus which I think sounds better. But yeah just brilliant, although Fergie's faux-accent makes me laugh every time! Love her really though. 77. The Beatles - Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) (1965) MG-ia0NV8Ts This actually feels a bit too low! Anyway, 'Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)' is by far my favourite track from 'Rubber Soul'. Eek where do I even start. Well the instrumental is the first thing we hear, and the best part of that for me is the twangs of George's sitar contributions - sonically gorgeous. But then John comes in with his absolutely stunning vocals here - he really does impress me vocally most of the time on the tracks with a more slow tempo. Anyway, this track is very understated for them on the surface and seems beautiful - but actually instead the meaning is quite tongue and cheek - basically when a guy gets invited to a girls house and she refuses to sleep with him so he sleeps in the bath, and he wants revenge for being led on so lights the house on fire! Sounds a bit mental, but Paul McCartney's description makes a hell of a lot more sense than this  Anyway, a track where they got to tell a full story and I love listening to it every single time. 76. Katy Perry - Wide Awake (2012) k0BWlvnBmIE So I believe this is my favourite Katy Perry song! At first, I actually found this really annoying because I thought she zapped through the verses too quickly which was a bit jarring at the time, but oh my gosh this managed to grow on me so much! I have quite a lot of fond memories of summer 2012, and this was mine and a certain friends song at the time, so firstly there will always be the sentimental value. Aside from that though, I think this track is absolutely wonderful - the chorus is so gripping I feel, it sounds almost magical in the sense of being transported elsewhere and getting totally lost in the song. She really sounds great on the elongated notes as well. The bridge - and in particular the second one - sound excellent in the build up to the chorus. I also love the meaning behind the song too - picking yourself up and getting on with your life - I could really do with some of that thought process quite often. But she turns the concept into something fun and motivating rather than preachy, so personally I really like the way she went about it. Fab video too, but she always brings it with her videography. 75. Lana Del Rey vs. Cedric Gervais - Summertime Sadness (2013) akhmS1D2Ce4 I was ALL OVER this last year - in fact it was my EOY number one - blowing away the competition as the only song that had been in my chart for 20+ weeks, so no surprises that it's made it this high. I very much enjoyed the original 'Summertime Sadness', especially with the classic Lana retro production - but this remix catered to the dance loving side of me as well. Alt and Dance are my two favourite genres on the whole, so WHAT a fusion for me! I actually really liked Cedric Gervais' 'Molly' in a guilty pleasure way because the production was AMAZING, so I was very excited at this team up and really wanted him to bring it. Well, yes he obviously did! OH how weird, it has just come on my iTunes, which means I can re-listen to it right now and remind myself of just why I love it so much. Oh wow, Lana's vocals and words work so well against the dance production, the "I've Got That Summertime Sadness" hook in particular. All the right build-up in places, I'm so glad this managed to do so well officially. Shame that the 'Young & Beautiful' remix didn't work quite as well for me. 74. Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You (1998) bwv-3cM2pVk Firstly, WHY is this not available on iTunes apart from on album only compilations? Anyway, THAT aside - what a dance classic! Like I've said countless times, loopy dance usually goes over my head EXCEPT when it's done extremely well - and this is definitely a case of when loopy dance CAN be exceptional! The French-house/nu-disco production is amazing - something that is so simple yet sounds quite magical repeated over again. Then of course you get the looped vocals as well that are quite unique and the title alone is such a gorgeous concept. Also the chart nerd part of me has always appreciated the music video! Such a shame that this collaboration of artists never released anymore singles, but it would be quite hard to top this so I guess it's good to go in AND out with a bang. 73. Fratellis - Whistle For the Choir (2006) o1oKBbReaOs Because I didn't start following the charts until nearly a year later, for ages this was one of those songs that I knew but didn't quite know the name of. So yay a few years later for listening to Now 66 and finally finding out what it was! Anyway, this is one of those tracks with huge lyrical impact - and appears to be telling the story of two people with their guards up as they've been hurt before, and have entered this relationship but are a bit scared to take it further, even though they both are REALLY into each other. Quite cute really, a fictional relationship that I can seem to get behind since I really enjoy this song! I guess I also really like the quirks about it too, like the whistling portion, and I love the lead singers vocals and the understated production that coincides with said vocals. 72. Shaggy ft. Rayvon- Angel (2001) XWJrPzAUzAs Okay total guilty pleasure here! There are a few cringe moments like 'shawty' in the chorus and Shaggy hasn't exactly been one of my favourite artists due to his rather indecipherable vocals. However, THIS is wonderful! The track oozes soul, and I love the boldness of the message, it's really quite sweet and not even in a sickly way which it was bordering on. I quite enjoy this reggae fusion - Rayvon's vocals are smooth and divine, and it's a nice change for songs to hail the number one woman in their life. This has so much soul that ultimately I get swept away and it doesn't feel as obviously corny as 'Just The Way You Are' (still sweet though of course). An angel is very high praise indeed! 71. The Killers - Somebody Told Me (2004) Y5fBdpreJiU Yesss what an absolute TUNE - luckily it's one of the few Killers singles that managed a really high peak officially. This has me hooked straight away with the bold production that slowly unravels into the first line. For YEARS as a kid my simple mind didn't get this and I thought it was about a t***** (!!) but then of course the conclusion that it was a METAPHOR managed to come into my brain. But yeah it definitely seems like the hard work in the studio where you have the pressure of delivering something that doesn't sound too similar to something else, and with tweaks it has potential etc. So I really like that subject matter and I adore the production and vocals as I usually do from Killers tracks, this really packs a punch. Fantastic, purchasing the Direct Hits album last year reignited my love of this. Edited August 20, 201410 yr by Jade
August 20, 201410 yr Two classics in that part Of course the summertime sadness remix, 1 of like 15 to 20 great songs to go top 10 last year (the chart was horrible in 2013, full of rubbish) And wide awake is up their with Katy's best IMO (only her first 2 and TOTGA are better). It is beautiful, Katy smashes it and I love the lyrics

August 20, 201410 yr gosh what can I say jade? I can say "yet another batch of popchartfreak numberones!" that's what I can say  Beatles, Lana, Killers, Britney, Robbie etc all just faaaaaab! I'd have picked a few different tracks from Black Eyed Peas (Rock Your Body is my fave) or Kylie (loads!) etc. but only nitpicking really, there's nothing I don't like and much I LOVE! I'll also support the Britney love, Toxic remains the best dance record of the 00's to me, perfect in every way for every second start to finish, and Everytime was a gorgeous double-whammy to follow it up.

August 24, 201410 yr Author 70. Calvin Harris - Acceptable In The 80's (2007) dOV5WXISM24 Rewind back to 2007, and Calvin bursted on to the charts with something quite unlike anything else, as while the mainstream was currently littered with huge pop tracks and indie, dance was a current rare occurrence. Calvin brought his electrohouse/nu-disco for the U.K. to hear and became a new artist for myself to absolutely love. Whilst I've always been appreciative of all things retro, being born in the eighties isn't exactly something I can shout about like Calvin since I didn't arrive on the planet until the next decade. So, the subject matter isn't really what entices me, it's everything that's going on alongside it at the same time. Of course, there is SO much going on that it all feels like this overwhelming explosion. You can pick out numerous different beats and synths and all of them bring something to the table as they sound bold and create little instrumental melodies of their own to fawn over even before the vocals come in! Of course, I do love it when said vocals come in. Calvin sounds like he's not taking himself too seriously where his enunciation of the lyrics are concerned, particularly the 'yeah' before the chorus begins. But that seems to add to the fun and charm of the track, I find myself interested with this rather eccentric time period as Calvin recollects and gives love to all the people who lived out this decade with him, and all the stuff they could do at the time, all the fun they had. Quite a peculiar video also! Such a great piece of dance music, so much more creative and interesting in my opinion to most of the tracks he releases nowadays. 69. Girls Aloud - Sound of the Underground (2002) V9Wv4SCBiTE Oh look - another debut single here! Fresh off their Popstars: The Rivals formation, Girls Aloud claimed a huge number one single just in time for Christmas. I was a little young at this point, but can recollect hearing it on the radio at the time. WHAT an arrival, though! For a girl group that were formed on a TV show and had no previous encounters with each other, it's quite extraordinary how already polished they seemed musically as they started their career off with a bang. This track oozes sheer tenacity and fierceness as the girls firstly tell of all their surroundings what with the stereo, neighbours and whatnot with determination in their eyes in the music video. The bridge is SO gripping with how chaotic the it suddenly is, and then the chorus following the brief electric twang of the surf guitar explodes onto us as they tell us about the sheer musical bliss of the different sounds we are exposed to and can experiment with, at least that's how I've always interpreted it anyway because I don't look for deep lyrical meaning in a Girls Aloud song, I turn to their music for pure catchy fun backed up with excellent production values. Oh also, the bridge was so strong that it also serves as the middle 8 but with a different tempo - and I LOVE this effect, Nadine sounds amazing. WHAT a debut and a lot more promising tracks were to be delivered! 68. Justin Timberlake - Like I Love You (2002) FQ3slUz7Jo8 Let me just start by saying that all the singles from the Justified era were incredibly solid for an act who'd just branched out from being in a boyband. In N*Sync, we heard Justin bring his falsetto to the group in their often cheesy boyband tracks (Just look at 'Pop' for example), but suddenly we were hearing Justin in more of an R&B/Dance-pop kind of way who was already evolving musically. It's a lot more Michael Jackson, which is fitting due to the duet by the two of them which would emerge almost twelve years later. For want of a better word, Justin oozes all kinds of swagger in this track and proves that he has enough star quality to make it on his own. His sultry vocals work in delivering the lyrics that aim to impress the object of his affection. It's then a bit more heartfelt when he goes into his higher register and pleads "I just wanna love you baby" but then suddenly it all becomes cool again after a brief effortless vocal run and guest rapper in the form of Clipse suddenly appearing and smoothly delivering his lines. I can take or leave the spoken bit at the end admittedly, but I can excuse that when there is a whole new beat then followed by drums that comes in at the same time. I adore the whole production as it sounds romantic with the Spanish guitar and then simply extremely cool with the beats, bleeps and drums. A star was born! 67. Shakira ft. Wyclef Jean - Hips Don't Lie (2006) DUT5rEU6pqM Well, I was always going to appreciate a massive pop hit that managed to incorporate salsa and reggae influences. As someone engrossed in Spanish culture due to the relatives of my mothers side of the family being Spanish, and subsequently going on holiday there every year since I was about three, the salsa influences and direct Spanish lexis were very appealing. I've always loved the culture with their fiestas and the language itself is simply gorgeous (until GCSE Spanish kicked in) so I absolutely adore the opening trumpets and when she speaks the language. But away from the genres, this is nothing less than a monster hit with all the right ingredients in the form of melodic statement production, lyrics that are very easy to grasp, a very catchy chorus and a bit of quirkiness from her vocals, the Spanish and Wyclef Jean's portion of the song. It's just sonically gorgeous and is absolutely essential as a feel-good track - part of what I loved about 'Whenever, Wherever' was the instrumentation and she brought it again on this song. Just amazing, her best work to date. 66. Girls Aloud - Call the Shots (2007) QPWUyAZZfK0 Oops two GA songs within minutes of each other, you'd be forgiven for thinking I was some sort of loon. But seriously, I can praise them so highly for being such a huge part of my childhood and being one thing that really brought me joy (apart from leading to what would have been total embarrassment as me and my friends who were in year four at the time wanted to go on Stars In Their Eyes Kids as them. Firstly - WHY. Secondly - Give me back that confidence. Thirdly - thank goodness, because as tone deaf eight year olds, we would've butchered their tunes) as I would follow every morsel of their career when signed up to their mailing list for years! What made me adore them so much was that I had five role models who always looked like they were having so much fun and always delivered feel-good tracks. Of course though, 'Call the Shots' was one of those moments where things weren't so upbeat. But that's okay too, especially when it was in the shape of this beautifully crafted track. Vocally they all sound divine - I am always stunned by Nicola's middle eight. A refreshing but very much welcomed change. 65. The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby (1966) k9Itt02QOO0 From one of the U.K's most successful girl groups to THE U.K's most successful group. 'Eleanor Rigby' is another track taken from my favourite Beatles album 'Revolver' which continued shaping them from more of a commercial rock and roll band to more of an experimental group. Gosh where do I even start with this song. So, the production is incredible, it is made up of a string quartet which explains why I enjoy it so much as I've always had a huge musical love for strings. But there is something so beautiful yet so haunting and morose about the production... almost like it is funeral music. Then again, the subject matter IS about loneliness and isolation, and the word 'died' is mentioned, so it does make sense for the two to intertwine. I'm usually more of a John girl vocally, but Paul completely had me gripped the whole way for this one. Such a riveting piece of music. 64. Massive Attack - Teardrop (1998) u7K72X4eo_s The second Massive Attack track in this countdown and also the third track in a row that is a bit of a downer! I remember discovering it when we were learning about abortions I believe in school quite a long time ago, as the music video shows a womb of course. If I'm in a down mood and this comes on, it is one of those songs that just brings a tear to my eye. It's all about the loss of someone which is probably the most unpleasant feeling ever. It takes that emotion and uses clever and meaningful songwriting to express the feelings of it - like teardrop on the fire representing crying at this loss, but the sadness will never put out the passion you have for the person you've lost, and fearless on my breath meaning that you can't keep crying though if you wish to live. So this really quite touches me, being the emotional wreck I am! But hey, what an absolutely STUNNING way to tackle the subject, really gentle vocals that convey the words incredibly, and really beautiful accompanying production as well. I can't fault it. 63. Avicii - You Make Me (2013) 2GADx4Hy-Gg The juxtaposition between the subject matter of this and the previous song is quite laughable, a mere two minutes ago I was reflecting after the lyrics sparking me to do so, and now the next track is a huge feel-good one! I'm a bit shocked myself that this has overtaken my EOY #1 'Summertime Sadness' in my affections, but even more shocking is that there is STILL one more 2013 track to come! Anyway, at first I wasn't quite sure at 'You Make Me' - I found the vocals on the chorus slightly grating. Unlike a lot of the country, I wasn't HUGE on 'Wake Me Up', so I wasn't really preparing to love this either. Well that turned out to be so wrong! I ended up absolutely adoring this track! There is so much going on production-wise for a start! As the track begins the uplifting and anthemic "We are one, one for sure, all united" etc. lyrics begin and already put me in such a fantastic mood. This is literally my FAVOURITE song at parties haha every time it drives me mad but in a totally good way! So yeah just utterly a superb piece of feel-good EDM! Totally overshadowed though which is a shame, but at least it went top five here! 62. Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag (2001) FC3y9llDXuM Yay more fun tracks to review! I was secretly hoping for that because I was starting to feel a little sad! But YES I love 'Teenage Dirtbag' and all the wonderful memories I have associated with it - particularly prom! The track was often a (not so much) victim to the 59p reductions which saw it return to the chart and reminded me of my love. So a track about the very accessible theme of unrequited love, made rather charming through the dorky approaches the guy takes ("I've got two tickets to Iron Maiden baby") and the vocals. I adore the guitar driven production and ooh the middle 8 is weirdly quite lovely in the feminine lilts of the vocals (is this still the same guy or a girl now at this point??). I just adore the whole story and although slightly cliche, it's VERY relatable and the chorus is pretty much anthemic. 61. Kelis - Trick Me (2004) zI339U6GS9s By far my favourite Kelis track! Before I properly appreciated production as a younger child, I dismissed this as basic because the chorus is rather simplistic. However, I came to appreciate that this is NOT the case at all - less is certainly more in this case. Kelis oozes sass and authority as she claims that she will not fall for these tricks again, only being reiterated by a really brief but edgy rap explaining the situation. Hints of vulnerability as well as she explains what went on with the guy and what made her feel down about it. What absolutely elevates this even further though is the production - such a cool beat and I love the 'woah' hook that goes on in the background, before Kelis later says it at the coda of the track. Once again I LONG for 00's R&B, Kelis was on fire in particular with this and 'Milkshake' of course, brilliant stuff!
