Their debut scoops album of the year award

Arctic Monkeys debut album 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not' has won this year's Nationwide Mercury Music Prize at a ceremony in London tonight (September 5).

The band picked up the £20,000 prize from presenter Jools Holland at the bash at the Grosvenor House hotel.

Commenting on the win, Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner said: "Somebody call 999, Richard Hawley's been robbed!" in reference to the also-nominated singer-songewriter who also hails from the band's native Yorkshire city of Sheffield.

Turner added: "Thanks to everyone that's helped us.

"Normally it (the award) doesn't go to a band that's sold so many records, to be blunt."

Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan - 'Ballad Of The Broken Seas'

Arctic Monkeys were favourites to win the £20,000 prize

Arctic Monkeys have won this year's Mercury Prize for their album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not.

The Sheffield-based band, whose album became the fastest-selling debut in the UK in February, were strong favourites to take the award.

Accepting the award, lead singer, Alex Turner, said their success was down to "good tunes" and "no tricks."

The band added that they were "surprised, honoured but very pleased" to win the £20,000 award.

The win caps a remarkable 12 months for Arctic Monkeys, nearly a year since their single, I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor, reached number one in the UK.

Their album became the fastest-selling debut in chart history, shifting more than 360,000 copies in its first week.

Collecting the award from host Jools Holland, Turner joked: "Someone call 999 - Richard Hawley has been robbed.

Scritti Politti's Green Gartside said it was good to be back on stage

He added: "Thanks everyone, thanks so much everyone that helped us. We are a bit surprised because normally it doesn't go to a band that has sold as many records as we have.

"We're very, very pleased because it's just good tunes, that's what we try to do. There are no tricks. Too many people try to do too many tricks."

The Mercury Music Prize was voted for by a panel of industry experts, journalists and artists, and is said to reward originality and creativity rather than sales success.

The judges described the Arctic Monkey's album as "great songs, astonishingly performed. Essential".

More than 200 albums were considered for the 2006 prize, which is awarded for the best album of the year by a British or Irish act.

Arctic Monkeys were up against nominees including Muse, Editors, Thom Yorke, Richard Hawley, The Guillemots and Hot Chip.

Zoe Rahman was among those who performed at the ceremony

The other contenders for the prize were Lou Rhodes, jazz pianist Zoe Rahman, Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan, rapper Sway and Scritti Politti - who last experienced major success in the mid-1980s.

Arriving at London's Grosvenor House Hotel for the ceremony, Scritti Politti's lead singer, Green Gartside, told the BBC he was looking forward to performing with the band for the first time in years.

"Twenty-six years between gigs, which is probably long enough and it's just fantastic.

"It's a real, it's a real thrill to find out that I can get back up on a stage and that I can sing, after a fashion, and I can enjoy it - most of all that's what's really cool."

Other performers at the ceremony included Thom Yorke, Hot Chip and the Guillemots.

The Mercury Prize was first awarded in 1992 and past winners have included Primal Scream, Suede, Pulp, Franz Ferdinand and Antony And The Johnsons.

It will be ;)

The Mercury usually doesn't go to the more high-profile acts but now it seems that happens every two years: Ms. Dynamite (2002) and Franz Ferdinand (2004)

That could be right actually. But I think its just pure coincidence TBH. With the whole mercury prize atm from what i've read on the BBC message board some people agree with the outcome and some people don't which is whats always gonna be expected.

The Arctic Monkeys have spoken out about their Mercury Prize victory on Tuesday night, revealing they were "flattered" by the award.

The band also reaffirmed their intention to donate the £20,000 prize to charity, with the support of their former bassist, Andy Nicholson.

The Monkeys released the following statement: “We had a fantastic night and we’re really chuffed with winning the award. It was unexpected but it means a lot to us as the competition was from other musicians we really respect. We strongly believe in the ethos of the Nationwide Mercury Prize in that it is about the music and not everything else that goes with it and are therefore really flattered by the decision.

“Regarding the £20,000 cheque, we are going to donate it to a worthy charity which we would prefer to keep private. We have discussed it with Andy who played an equal part in the making of the album and he is happy with our choice."

Another example that there down to earth lads and still aren't really fazed by the whole fact their famous and they don't milk there fame like certain other people. -_- Also glad to see them consult Andy about what to do with the cheque. ^_^

Oh good to seem donate it to charity :D I was thinking that they were going to split it between the five members that have been not that that amount would make a different come this time next year. However I remember some people saying that they think Alex Turner has turned into a tw*t just because he tried to be funny at the NME awards and failed  I don't think it's got to them and infact they don't give a f*ck it seems and intend to stick to their guns.

Yeah, I don't think he's ever done anything to be called anything like that as far I've seen anyway

Well it could only be  what makes this award great is that it's done on musical quality ALONE and I personally think they got it right and I'm pleased they won it now despite my fears that more hype would hurt them.

I know as far as I can see he hasn't done anything wrong and he hasn't slagged anyone off which is what a lot of artists do to gain media coverage. -_-

1993 Suede – Suede

1994 M People – Elegant Slumming

1995 Portishead - Dummy

There's not really any consistant pattern. Maybe last year the big albums didn't get it because they were all $h!te?
