Hello, does anybody have a list of the songs which spent most weeks in the UK top 40? I'm more interested in consecutive weeks, but total weeks would also be nice.

Thank you in advance.

Having looked back at commentaries when Ho Hey was approaching the record for consecutive weeks I have

Stranger On The Shore - Mr "Acker" Bilk - 45 weeks

Ho Hey - The Lumineers - 38 weeks

Relax - Frankie Goes To Hollywood - 37 weeks

Counting Stars - One Republic - 34 weeks

Happy - Pharrell - 34 weeks and counting

You missed off "Relax" Suedehead; it managed 37 weeks in the Top 40 consecutively. A pretty ICONIC double Top 10 run in one chart run which not even "Happy" could hope to emulate.

Happy spent 20 weeks top 10 as opposed to Relax's 19, so impressive as Relax's run may look, Pharrell's is better. Looks like no-one can avoid bowing down to the power of Pharrell http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ed2305b7.png

I'm pretty sure (from memory) Steps - Heartbeat/Tragedy had 32 weeks top 40?!

Wouldn't know how to check if anyone could for me :)

Tragegy 2-5-5-8-8-6-4-{1}-2-3-3-3-6-10-10-15-16-20-23-24-30-30-32-42-41-48-57-59-65-69->30

24 in the Top 40

Incidentally, does anyone know what the current record is for most consecutive weeks in the Top 40 are for a record that didn't go Top 20?

I think it is "Amazed" by Lonestar (17 weeks) but probably something has beaten it recently..

24-23-30-36-32-30-28-26-{21}-23-22-22-21-26-30-35-37

Gold Dust by DJ Fresh managed 20 weeks top 40 without entering Top 20. However the run was split into 2 with the original and a remix, but I believe it's still credited under the one song.

That was the song that instantly sprang to mind but yeah, consecutively I'm not too sure.

Another one I thought it may have been was Dog Days Are Over but just checked the run and doesn't beat 17!

Andy Stewart's A Scottish Soldier came close. It reached number 19 twice in its 36 week run, once near the beginning and again towards the end. In between those two peaks it spent 27 weeks in the top 40 but outside the top 20.

Minor correction, 21 weeks. IIRC fchd confirmed at the time that this was a record.

And when it was supposedly the remix charting (the OCC did not ever differentiate between the two, in fact I don't think they ever differentiate between remixes any more) it was still the same version selling for the most part, the Shy FX remix never really went higher than the low top 100 on iTunes, so those 21 weeks were more legitimate than you'd think :P

Other songs with 10+ weeks top 40 without making the top 20 in the decade to date:

16 Skrillex feat. Sirah - Bangarang (13 consecutive)

13 Mariah Carey feat. Miguel - #Beautiful (all consecutive)

12 Wynter Gordon - Dirty Talk (all consecutive)

11 Florence + The Machine - Dog Days Are Over (7 consecutive)

11 Shakira feat. Freshlyground - Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) (all consecutive)

10 Kanye West, Jay-Z and Big Sean - Clique (7 consecutive)

DJ Fresh's runs were 11 and 10 weeks, so the longest consecutive run in the decade is 13 shared by Skrillex and Mariah Carey.

anyhow, it only spent 9 weeks top 40.

40-30-30-{26}-29-28-38-36-38

It did spend 29 weeks top 75 though

Most total weeks inside Top 40 without making Top 20 - "Gold Dust" 21 weeks as mentioned above.

Most consecutive weeks with same criteria - 19 and it's a real oldie not mentioned in this thread. See if anyone can find it before I spoil it!

Ken Dodd had an interesting early career when it comes to records hanging around between 21 & 40. After his debut "Life Is Like A Violin" was a top tenner, his next six hits all spent decent time in the top 40 without making the top 20

"Once In Every Lifetime" 11 weeks

"Pianissimo" 12 weeks

"Still" 6 weeks

"Eight By Ten" 11 weeks

"Happiness" 11 weeks

"So Deep Is The Night" 6 weeks

(Not all consecutive weeks)

His next hit was his blockbuster number one "Tears"
