Music can be such a revelation

| 10 // Into The Groove // Like A Virgin (re-issue) // 8.73 (4: jakewild, 5: triangles // 11: .cdc., tyler, sweetcandy, 10: liam, niallminogue, luciano, leww, titty, dandy, ultraviolence, jay, gavindeejay, aled, aarontm)

With an average score considerably higher than the one previous to it, and kick starting the top 10 in groovy style, is 'Into The Groove' taken from the 1985 film 'Desperately Seeking Susan' as well as the re-released version of 'Like A Virgin'. Written while watching a man groove on the dancefloor ahead of her, the simple yet effective song has won fans over since the mid 80s and continues to attract new lovers today. It's lush, exotic and wonderfully fun. Hailed by critics as "Madonna's first great single" - source Jay © while i wouldn't go that far, it was one of her shining early moments and has stood the test of time better than almost anything else she released in this era. Unable to chart in the US, it was later honoured as Billboard's Dance Song of the Decade to soften the blow, while it stormed charts across the world, most notably in the UK where it became her first #1 single - she also became the first female artist in UK chart history to hold the top two positions of the chart at the same time, as she held off her own single 'Holiday' from reaching the summit. A music video, spliced with clips from the film it was taken from was released and shows just how groovy and slick the song is; Madonna is both carefree and effortlessly sexy throughout.

Early Madonna at her absolute BEST.

~YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSS

REALLY overrated. It's very good, but hardly the worthy of MARGE TOP 20 status, let alone the massive adulation it gets.

Great song, funnily enough it always gets me in the groove when I hear it! Just so feel good but much more grander than the other feel good tracks before it.

However, even though it's a classic, I don't think many would expect it to be her best UK seller. There's probably a handful of songs people would think sold more.

Heart FM have sucked the fun out of "Into the Groove" for me. My fave version of Into the Groove though has to be her Re-Invention Tour version. Bag-Pipe-Slayage!
I enjoy 'Into The Groove' the most in this form

Love that mash up! Makes the original sound very boring indeed!

You were my lesson I had to learn

| 09 // The Power of Goodbye // Ray of Light // 8.78 (4: jakewild, 5: gavindeejay // 11: gooddelta, johnkm, cassandra, robswift, oliver, casey, 10: regina, nickf1, mr_aly, randomfurlong, dandy, jay, gezza, haus, triangles, sweetcandy, joe.)

And so we say goodbye to the first of three(!) 'Ray of Light' singles to make the top 10. I had to double check that it wasn't actually supposed to be higher going on that wave of huge scores it got. Still, an incredible achievement, especially for something that can get overlooked in the shadow of the album's "bigger" singles - i am ecstatic to see it perform so well here and it makes for a very welcomed top 10 entry. The fourth song to be released from the album, it rode on the success of the previous singles and its parent album and managed to perform respectfully well, including in the UK where it reached the top 10. A powerful ballad, that matches the atmospheric and chilling tones of the rest of the album, it is yet another, stop what you're doing and take notice moment. Lyrically the song is one of Madonna's most painful; she often explores hurtful topics, but here the pain is sky high. Singing of a break-up and the difficulty of letting go, the message is universal and the emotion is overflowing. In the suggestively dark and brooding video, tinted with a ghostly green effect, Madonna plays a deadly game of chess with a lover, before destroying it and moving on. The ending to the video caused controversy as it suggests an act of suicide as Madonna descends into the sea in front of her; it's treated so delicately and effectively though that it reignites new meaning into the song and makes it into something all the more special. There really is nowhere left to hide at times.

Amazing and emotive ballad, the lyrics really do cut deep and it's so relatable. I may or may not have cried to it on a couple of occasions in my youth when I experienced a bad break-up.
Did I not give this a 10?! :o Big slap on the wrist for me, 'The Power of Goodbye' is absolutely stunning. Some really beautiful sounds and touching lyrics, definitely makes it one of the best pieces of work on Ray of Light. And of course long, black haired Madonna is one of her best looks.

Ideally (never gonna happen)

1 Frozen

2 Power of Goodbye

3 Like a Prayer

What I need right now is some good advice

| 08 // Papa Don't Preach // True Blue // 8.94 (6: fgiboy // 11: haus, aarontm, joe., 10: liam, niallminogue, randomfurlong, dandy, ultraviolence, jay, gezza, cassandra, jsilv, mikemyers, liamk)

Inspired by gossip heard from teenage girls outside of a recording studio, and made into one of Madonna's most special and darling songs. Taken from 'True Blue', an album all about acceptance, appreciation and love, 'Papa Don't Preach' sits as one of the most powerful. Dealing with the very real issues of teenage pregnancy, abortion and familial acceptance, the song is girly at heart (accentuated by Madonna's pining vocals to her "papa"), but it also extends meaning and relevance universally to anyone that hasn't had a life decision accepted by those they look up to. The song was rightfully a roaring success around the world, reaching the summit in the US and UK and taken across the world in various tours since its release. Notably, Madonna dedicated the song to Pope John Paul II, who asked fans to boycott her tours, and Madonna stated that this extended the meaning of the song more widely to standing up against patriarchal figures more generally. The multi-layered meaning also received controversy because of its supposed encouragement of teenage pregnancy. Its video shows a fragile Madonna at times, pouring her lyrics out to the audience, and is interlaced with two radically different looks of the tomboy vs a more sexualised female as well as the dramatic interactions with her father. It ends happily as she is able to embrace him after he accepts her pregnancy and is one of the most tender moments of her career. The song has taken on a deeply personal stance for me; I can't listen to it or watch the video without welling up and thinking about how impactful it was to me a few months ago. Sometimes it's hard to see how a song has become so ingrained in so many people's lives, but for this it is easy because it's so real. Beautifully written, sung, visualised and executed, i am shocked that it's not higher than this.

Each track just gets better and better, satisfies me to know 'La Isla Bonita' is yet to come! Feels like this thread should be longer than 19 pages also
Hands down favourite Madonna song ever. The lyrical content and power behind the vocals are amazing. And it's still a song you can really dance to. So iconic.

I prayed that the days would last, they went so fast

| 07 // La Isla Bonita // True Blue // 8.95 (2: jakewild, 3: fgiboy // 11: randomfurlong, o'mie, simon, .cdc., oliver, mikemyers, 10: liam, gooddelta, johnkm, niallminogue, leww, jark, ultraviolence, gezza, cassandra, tyler, robswift, jsilv, haus, casey)

I was going to tease before posting the last song that one album was about to face a double whammy of eliminations. But a) it might have been a tad obvious at which album that was, and b) these aren't really "eliminations" as the songs have managed to muster huge averages and peak considerably well in your top 10 hall of fame. But alas, the final single from 'True Blue' (only just) does indeed crash out as 'La Isla Bonita' shines its last ray of sunshine. Translated as the 'The Beautiful Island', the song was released as the fifth and final single from the album, and apparently she left the best for last for you guys. Laced with scorching Latino instrumentation, lyrics and vocals, the song was a tribute to the beauty of the Latin people she met but its meaning also extends to a more open falling in love with someone far away and longing to be with them. The instrumental was initially offered to Michael Jackson, before Madonna gained control and wrote the lyrics and melody over it. It is one of the most performed songs on Madonna's tours since its release and became a commercial hit (reaching the #1 spot in the Uk for two weeks). It was also her first #1 in France, and has yet to be beaten there in sales as it swept over Europe like a hot plague. The music video, as expected, is hot and saucy and features two Madonnas; one is mundane, sombre and reflective, the other, a dazzling beauty draped in red and both reflect the pensive nature of the song, merged with its sizzling passion. As she leaves her room towards the end of the video, and dances with the locals, it's another moment of tender acceptance and extends the meanings of the album further. Como puede ser verdad~

Into The Groove is absolute perfection  It should have received an 11 from me but it was tough and Madonna is one of those artists where I struggle to decide a lot of the time and it depends on the day.
Tune! Was #1 the week before I was born. I came into the world to the glorious latin tones of Madge at her finest (and Starship) in control of the charts.
