#40 The Saturdays – What Are You Waiting For?

(UK Chart peak #38)

Scraping into my top 40 at number #40 is The Saturdays’ latest and possibly last single. Since I’m associated on this forum with being such a stan/loon for The Saturdays, it’s clear to see that this is somewhat of a flop in my EOY chart. I enjoyed this song to begin with, but it got old really fast. And though it shouldn't matter, the weak performances, promo and overall handling of the single may have tainted how I feel about it. Nonetheless, it’s still a superior pop banger in comparison to lots of what has touched the chart this year.

#39 One Direction – Steal My Girl

(UK Chart peak #3)

This might be a surprise to some of you (or even myself). I haven’t really liked any One Direction music since their first album, and really can’t stand at least 2/5 of the band. But after originally writing this song off as generic, it turned out to be a right ear-worm. I love the 80s vibe about it and honestly think it’s one of their best singles to date.

WAYWF was such a disappointment for me, I was really hoping for something excellent but instead we got a faceless dance tune.. If they'd pulled out something like Ego or Disco Love then I don't thunk their career would be where it is now..

On the other hand, Steal My Girl is really excellent and completely took me by surprise. I'd never have expected to like it as much as I do but it's really quite catchy and the video is good too. The album also shocked me because it's fantastic, quite mature abd some of the tracks are huge!

How can anyone call WAYWF a dissapointment :( It's pop/dance at its best, generic or not. YAY for you including it Though Joe. Booooo at 1D being above the sats with that song though :puke:

Thanks for commenting Josh and James! James - never fear - there is a rather large hint in the title post that The Sats may just appear again later in the chart ;)

#38 Beyonce – 7/11

(Chart peak #36)

Probably the newest release on my EOY chart comes from Queen B herself. It seems ‘7/11’ has polarised opinions so far. I can see why, as it’s a bit off-beat. But I admire its quirky production, bizarre vocals and overall beat. When the ‘Wave your hands side to side…’ kicks in it becomes a real stomper. It’s my second favourite song from the Beyoncé era and might grow on me even more. But for now it’s too fresh to be featured any higher on my top #40, because it hasn’t resonated with me enough. I might hate it next week, who knows?

#37 Shakira – Empire

(UK Chart peak #25)

Being a long time Shakira fan, I wasn’t overly impressed with her comeback Rihanna collaboration. ‘Empire’ was a massive step up for me. ‘She Wolf’, ‘Wherever, Whenever’ and ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ would have easily been within the top #10/5 of their respective release-years of my EOY chart, so it's clear ‘Empire’ isn’t quite the Shakira single I had been waiting for. But with a beautiful video, strong vocals and a unique sound, it’s safely in my top 40 at #37.

#36 Hozier - Take Me To Church

(UK Chart peak #25)

I’ve followed Hozier for a while, as he’s from my boyfriend’s hometown in Ireland. And while I have enjoyed a lot of his songs, I think this song is simply stunning. I’m really glad he re-released this in 2014 here in the UK and it managed to be somewhat of a hit. I’m routing for his popularity to continue to grow.

great countdown so far. Haven't heard the Beyonce track yet. Not the strongest of Sats tracks for me. I just hope they can turn it around in a fresh year or something! Love Empire though. Probably my fave Shakira track this era :)

Thanks!

Yes, I would have loved Empire to have been supported a bit more, it could have been a decent hit for her!

Great to see Beyoncé at #38, love 7/11 and nice to see Hozier make it too!

'What Are WE Waiting For?' banished for not knowing the song title

Empire is fab too

Sats and 1D  Both are fairly high up in mine! Take Me To Church is nice too, not huge on 7/11 though, a huge mess to my ears :( Empire is fab also

7/11! Yay, glad it's so high already. On first listen I really didn't get it and it wasn't what I wanted or expected from her but now I love it. The video is absolutely excellent and I love how it's quite comical too. The song itself is an absolute jam too and such an earworm, had it stuck in my head all week!

Empire was definitely a good single choice from Shakira, I loved it from when I first heard it so was glad that it was made into a single. I love the huge 'and I'm like' in the chorus, it's quite unusual but works well I think.

Take Me To Church was a song I completely did not get to begin with, it took months for it to grow but now I do quite like it, my favourite part of the song is probably the 'amen's because they're just so heavenly. I think I prefer Sedated from his singles collection though.

I heard 7/11 once and hated it but it might grow on me (doubt it at the moment)

Steal my girl is 1D's 2nd best ever song (but still only 5/10 for me). What 2 members do you not like in the band?

Take me to church is really good and I love what are you waiting for

Nice start to this chart (and also hoping big things for Katy B as well as her cover is in the opening post,, I adore CFNR)

#35 Sigma – Nobody To Love

(UK Chart peak #1)

This is one of only four of 2014's UK #1s that made my chart this year. Like many, I have grown tired of the many, many faceless dance bangers flooding the chart over the last year or so. But something about this Sigma tune is very uplifting and euphoric, I haven't grow tired of it and it stands out amongst other similar songs.
