He doesn't hear a sound... no ones around

13. La Roux – Sexoteque

I will go into a lot more detail on what this artist has delivered this year, but we start her domination properly here, just outside the top 10 with 'Sexoteque' Going on the title the song might seem like a completely throwaway track about all things ~censored~. In actuality it is a song that runs so much deeper. It is about insecurities, unbalanced relationships, self-worth and so much more. When i first got into the song, the two characters that are presented (a he and a she) came at polar opposites for me - i felt sorry for the she, who was alone at home waiting for her man to come back and wondering what seedy things he might be up to. But as i listen more to it, it is in fact both parties that are at a loss in their lives. The male ventures to these sex places seeking gratification but he hears nothing, he sees nothing and he is just as void as the female in question. It is that all too common issue of people being together when there is no real spark, no excitement, no love. A trouble in paradise if you will~

But away from the meaning of the song it is a completely joyous affair. Dark subject matter presented incredibly infectiously and brimming with colour, character and personality. Hugely sing-a-long worthy, quirky and zany, it's feel-good music at its finest.

07. Tove Lo - Truth Serum

Habits / Not On Drugs / Over / Out Of Mind / Paradise

And here she is again, this time bowing out of my 2014 countdown with one of the most perfect EPs i have ever listened to. 'Truth Serum' is everything the title suggests - it is Tove being completely honest to herself as an artist and person. It ranks higher than the album for me because as a full listen, the EP is far more consistent and packs so many ideas into such a small package that it's a wilder, more exhilarating listen than the album. The 5 tracks are all varying in terms of style, pace and aggressiveness but put together and it's the perfect concoction. In the heartbreaking moments of 'Over', as her voice cracks and crumbles in the vocals she exposes herself as imperfect, which makes the listen all the more real and truthful. Then the EP comes to life in the explosive moments of 'Habits' and 'Not On Drugs' and her personality shines through. Throughout it all though, it is the lyrics which shine through the brightest and she is consistently inventive with how she says what she needs to. There isn't a single moment here that lets off or blows out the intense steam, it's full on from start to end and exactly how EPs or albums for that matter should be done.

Fun fact: she is one of the only artists who i will allow tracks to chart under two albums on my last.fm (the tracks that are present on both this EP and 'Queen of the Clouds') B-)

12. SchoolBoy Q – Hell of a Night

One that i don't think many of you will have heard, unfortunately, but one that demands listening to. This track came to me like a devil in the night - in an album that is already so dark and twisted, this track stands above them all as the darkest, most twisted. It is ferocious, damning and scary but despite this it remains a fun, party-starting anthem. I obviously can't relate to the lyrics TOO much and that's not the reason i got so into it, instead it is in the relentless search for excess in the hell of the night that kept me coming back for more. A very affecting song and one that really gets into your skin after a few listens. The best moment on one of the best hip-hop records i've heard in a long time - i cannot deny his presence. I love playing it before heading out for the night, and then returning to it in the comedown period after said night; it defines those incredible lost moments from a night as well as those moments you wish you could lose.

11. Ben Khan – Youth

Just missing out on an all important top 10 placing is the darling, beautiful specimen (that also makes killer music) Ben Khan. Having followed his stuff briefly before, it took this absolute gem to properly make me a fan. 'Youth' is sensational in all that it does - the visuals make for one of my favourite videos of the year, his vocals melt around the music, the lyrics are so deep and the instrumentation moves me effortlessly. It's a song that i became obsessed with a few months ago, and now only return to sporadically, but every time i do i relive all the emotions that came with the song during its peak. It conjures up so much passion and meaning that without even knowing why, i am always left feeling incredibly emotional after each listen. The loss of youth is something that i have come to terms with personally recently but still fail to properly accept, so to hear a song such as this explore all the wonders of youth, the perils, the dangers, the escape from it... it's overwhelming.

Truth Serum  As I say every time it's brought up, I just can't even contain my love for Habits into words, such a genuinely magical amazing song <3

Truth Serum is so majestic. I still haven't got around to the full album, but that EP is just pop perfection from start to finish.

Surprised to see Josef quite low on that chart, actually - I guess it's a shorter EP but it's also close to perfection.

rly do need to listen to Schoolboy Q as that's two trusted recs on it I have now!!

one thing you have taught me this year bal is that ben khan is somewhat attractive

and yess on the SchoolBoy train too. Start with 'Hell of a Night' if you want a little taster before fully getting into it all~

06. Banks - Goddess

Brain / Begging For Thread / Drowning / You Should Know Where I'm Coming From / f*** Em Only We Know

An album that is STILL growing on me to this day - my first listen was pleasant, my second was incredible, and it's gotten even better with every play since. The key thing that wows me with this woman is the presence she maintains in the music she creates. It reminds me of a film with one central character that never leaves the view of the camera. Throughout the album she is the all-powerful Goddess, the lowly subservient damsel or the egocentric queen. It's a very "female"-centred album if i can use that term correctly, in that she is constantly reaffirming her female prowess and battling away the demons that attempt to take that away from her. Her vocals are very love-or-hate, at times they are so screechy and distorted that you can lose the hold she has on you, but she will masterfully draw you back in with her next acid-tongued lyric or groan or heart-breaking statement. The crazed vocals are intentional and add to the charm of the album.

I adore her as a woman and as an artist; she is incredibly beautiful, graceful and proud of who she is and it really transcends into the music she creates. There are some moments that are worthy of skipping, but the highlights more than make up for these and it's rightfully mustered up a very strong position here for me. She cheated slightly by having half the album already heard before its release, but when the cheating sounds as good as this, i can not complain. I would say she became one of the central women of the year for me... but alas 5 others have taken the crown over her :o

Could end in burning flames or paradise

05. Taylor Swift – 1989

Wildest Dreams / Blank Space / Style / How You Get The Girl / New Romantics

This hasn't had as much time to settle with me as the other albums in the countdown, and yet it still musters up a very respectable top 5 position. I will not hide that prior to giving this album a listen, Taylor was fairly low on my rankings of the current "pop girls". But with this record she has proven that she capable of competing with them all, and hell, even surpassing most. '1989' is an incredible album and i will attempt to explain why it's grabbed such a hold of me.

Firstly it is pop at its finest - the lyrics are playful, tongue in cheek, relate to the artist singing them but also to the listeners, the beats are sick :music:, the choruses are catchy and the tender moments are so moving. She has managed to create an album much like 'Teenage Dream', 'The Fame Monster' and 'Warrior' in which it is brimming with personality, but never once feels overbaked, and is consistently strong. Virtually every song on the album has a cause to be released as a single, and i hope she does actually manage to get as many out there as possible (including the bonus tracks). From the soaring highs of 'Wildest Dreams' right down to the timid moments of 'This Love', the album has it ALL and then some. She has perfected the pop scene to a tee and has mastered her own style which i hope she continues down for a long time to come. Even as i write this i am shocked at how much the album has impressed me, it's truly one of the pop record of this decade - a remarkable album that i am hoping i will enjoy long into 2015. Well done Taylor, if nothing else this year, you shook off one hater here ~
