From lower down, Artifice was a really great BJSC discovery and the first song I really liked from SOHN so thanks for that and Make Me Feel Better has really hit me lately, hopefully also gonna do some big things in 2015. Also much love for the Elyar Fox & Cheryl Cole commetaries, I very much agree, I was close to ranting about the latter in my own thread, she has been utterly awful musically this year.

two songs here that i happen to associate with bal but for different reasons. firstly sZa who i associate with this young man because i discovered this young woman through his adoring fanship. this song is utterly beautiful and has on occasion brought me to tears. the whole record 'Z' is an utter revelation and 'julia' is another amazing pop song for another countdown. 'shattered ring' is the real KINK worthy moment there. she is amazing and i can't wait to see what else she has to bring over the next few years.

 

not a million years away from sZa is the wonderful fka twigs who has really become the grimes of 2014, the indie-cindy pin-up whose art and expression has come to define 2014 and inspire many copycats. and who knew she would end up dating robert pattinson? 'two weeks' is a gloriously unraveling pop moment. the video perfectly complimenting her aesthetic and intention. it's rare to see an artist line-up all bases and be the very best they can be and totally shake up the zeitgeist?

It is a gorgeous song that has gone on to mean a lot for me, and so to see it have an effect on another is truly wonderful. Lovely to see 'Julia' and 'Shattered Ring' getting mentions here too, they are two more gems off 'Z' though i'd say the entire album is worthy of praise.

'Julia' is my firm favourite from her (it's also my #1 most played song on last.fm by some distance, which has to count for something :o). That, 'Warm Winds' and 'AFTERMATH' are her holy trinity in my opinion. And they're all so different from each other and show varying sides to her which again is part of her wonderful artistry <3

time to get FABULOUS *.* my love of drag race knows no bounds, it is probably my favourite television programme of my entire life and it'd take a whole essay to explain why. runway songs don't normally live up to much but from the very offing of hearing 'sissy' on that first runway for the couture task i loved it, easily the best since the 'champion (remix)' and pavel's success in bjsc only adds to the whole drag race hysteria that bj thankfully became a part of in 2014 properly. season 7 will no doubt be fabuleux *.* *.*

 

the second and final entry for tinashe comes in at 15. 'all hands on deck' invokes a different era of rnb, stabbing synths, sophistication and pose, this is her flowering moment and the ace in her deck (NO PUN!!!!) i don't know what 2015 holds for her but with any justice it'll be the year she truly blossoms and makes something of herself, if the entirety of bj can get behind you in obscurity then what else can you achieve? the last time something akin to this was seen was gaga and we know where that went. GOOD LUCK!

13 Bang La Decks feat. Dominique Young Unique ‘Utopia (Extended Mix)’

inching ever closer to the top 10 and here are two songs that very easily could have made it to the top 10, except they didn't because they haven't. first up is elizabeth rose who gave farc a follow up top 10 with 'sensibility', to me here lies the epitome of blog-pop; the kaleidoscope of genres, those ping-pong ball synths coupled with those occasionally mariah-esque harmonies all the more complimented by a bright and brash video. pretty much everything i love in a pop package. i'm sure she will never be heard from again...

 

inching in at lucky number 13 is the phenomenal 'utopia' from bang la decks whose name, i get the sense is a pun on the nation of bangladesh, featuring the vocals of ever illustrious dominique young unique, i hate to get iggy azalea on you all but this is exactly the kind of thing i wanted from azealia banks before she became what she has become. those tribal-lite beats build things perfectly and a smooth delivery from unique makes this easily one of the best dance tracks of the year. everything is made all the better by a tits-off breakdown complete with tambourine breakdown. as nobody here probably knows, my motto is music is always better in 'extended mix' form and nothing could be truer than with this very song. fyi this track is also on the fifa 2015 soundtrack but i'm guessing most of buzzjack was already aware of that.

 

 

12 Marina & the Diamonds ‘Froot’

 

so here are two songs that have MOST SADLY NOT MADE THE TOP 10. first in at number 12 is the return from bj-beloved marina & the diamonds, i remember marie when she started out back in my teenage years (i even have a limited 7" of 'i am not a robot' to prove i was a hipster and loved her before anyone else!!!!) and i really loved her, a kate bush for the new times. then she came along with the obnoxious 'electra heart' era and well i get the concept was supposed to the tacky and saccharine but there comes a point when the concept becomes the art and the art the concept so it was what it was; complete with mouldy wig. but that seems to be in the past on the basis of her current material. sticking to one producer whose name i cannot remember at cannot be bothered to look up, it seems to be paying real dividends based on the first two 'froots' to be released, a cringeworthy concept can be forgiven when the standard of music is as high as this. 'froot' is a song with so many MOMENTS; turns of phrases, a wonderfully brazen lead into the chorus. it a wonderful, wonderful listen. hopes for 'froot' the album are sky high currently.

11 iamiamiwhoami ‘Fountain’

 

so it's iamiamiwhoami who pull into unlucky 11th position for 2014. here is one act i've never really gotten per se. i just see breezy soundscapes set to a lot of lush landscapes. almost a case of style over substance (not even almost if i am being honest) but 'fountain' managed to totally alter that perspective for me, yes the video was totally beautiful but the music really lived to the video that came with it. i love pop music that has a great ambition to it and this has to be one of the most strong-willed and beautiful electro-pop numbers of 2014. from the moment those cantankerous synths strike like lightning in the opening moments of 'fountain' the scene is set perfectly. everything comes together so so beautifully. as if one is in another world, jonna's world. and then that CHORUS i didn't like much else of what i heard from 'vista' but this is such a perfect moment. whenever i feel down i listen to it and with headphones in moving through busy london it is just perfect. i've ever cried listening to this too. having music that resonates so truly and deeply is a pretty perfect thing. more of this please jonna! (and i will shut up on my weep-athon)

Two stunners just missing out on the top 10 there :wub: 'Froot' is as zany and mad as they come which is why i love it and 'fountain' is majestic and magical <3

 

I predict and pray for 'Chandelier' to storm in the top 10~

I've missed loads over Xmas, my faves of the more recent ones are definitely "Do It Again", "Two Weeks", "One More", "Touch" and the new Susanne Sundfør track, which is really growing on me rn. I absolutely loved "Fountain" earlier in the year and can sort of agree with your commentary, however I also loved "Blue Blue" and "Hunting For Pearls" from the album. I'm a bit obsessed with her at the moment. I am also now getting in to Tinashe (I know, I know... late) and adore "2 On".

 

Unless you are counting Burial as 2014, I really can't predict anything in your Top 10- apart from that it will all be neonGOLD.

 

Unlike Bal, I am hoping Chandelier doesn't appear. I like it, but it's not Top 10 of the year material IMO.
