As expected Kendrick is now #1. Why couldn't he have just stuck to plan? (I can't complain too much, as I just downloaded his album too)

Given the success of Drake's album (debuting at #3) on less than a full week on sale, I think the hype around Kendrick's album could cause an upset for Marina and the Diamonds sadly. Saying that, Marina's album campaign began back in October and with the lack of single success, if the album can't even hit #1 then it's going to reflect badly.

I didn't really ever see Marina as a competitor for the top spot with or without a "hit"

Kendrick hasn't got physicals until next week though.

I don't think Kendrick will sell many physicals. It's common for Urban and Hip-Hop acts to sell very well digitally. I'm not sure if he will be #1 officially, and I don't think Marina will be either.

Word is that it wasn't at all planned, TDE seemed quite angry about it on Twitter.

I was just put back on preorder in the US, but the clean version is still available.
Something odd it going on then. It's still to buy here? From a first brief listen it's a good album though, really hoping he can do well with this release.
So is there any word as to whether pre-orders are included in the initial update now? I can't believe enough Marina fans bought the album to get it to no 1 in the space of a couple of hours whereas it took Madonna a while to go top 10.

It's blatantly obvious the pre-orders were added on again for Marina :P Why is another matter, they only seem to be applying the new rules to some releases.

Hoping Kendrick can make at least the top 5 this week if Drake could go top 3 on 2 days of downloads!

Top 100 update (17/03/2015, 22:00)

Earl Sweatshirt's new album is being released in a similar manner to Kendrick's, announced only a couple of weeks before release. I know he isn't a massive name but hip hop in particular seems to be increasingly going down this route (Kanye is doing something similar, stringing us along with no release date but it'll reportedly be out very soon after we find out what that date is). I wouldn't mind seeing this become a major trend across all genres, it certainly makes album releases seem more EXCITING.

Madonna EP thing at #23 seems to be a bunch of songs that aren't on her album. I hadn't heard anything about this release.

Of Monsters And Men's new album doing remarkably well on pre-orders for a band who had precisely one hit which is now long in the past, have they done some promotion recently? Other pre-orders: 'Now! 90' #102, James Bay standard #152, The Staves #169, All Time Low #172, Florence + The Machine #173 (I'd have expected them to be doing a fair deal better than this TBH...), Blur #175, Shawn Mendes #176, The Vaccines 'English Graffiti' #183, Courtney Barnett 'Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit' #191.

New artist album releases this week

New single EP releases this week

Charting on pre-orders alone

Makes sense releasing albums straight away these days IMO always said this.

Don't understand tho why Drake's new album hasn't had any radio 1 playlist support since it was released?

Isn't Florence + the Machine's album out in June? I think being Top 200 on iTunes at this stage is nothing to worry about, especially when they're bound to do a lot of promotion nearer the time (Radio 1's Big Weekend for instance). Even though 'What Kind of Man' made the Top 40, I doubt many people are aware Florence has made a return just yet.

Because it's not really an album and doesn't have any singles :P

I suppose you're right, it is still quite a while away from release. Just seems a tad concerning that it was only initially top 100 for a couple of days and has been nowhere near since. Hopefully it will pick up as the release date gets closer.

I've heard Preach a couple of times.

Yeh Florence will have at least one more single before June if not 2. Just shows you how big James Bay will be next week as his albums been constantly top 100 since Xmas.

What was the Drake album then? I'm genuinely confused and haven't really looked it up, I just know it has 16 songs on it. Just thought radio 1 would jump on his new material.

Drake's new release is classed as a mixtape isn't it? Not really sure what a mixtape actually is - if it's as many songs as the Drake release is, I'd class it as an album too or if it were to have 5 tracks, it would be like an EP.
Oh right so each song is mixed into the other, I didn't realise that.

That is not at all what mixtape means :P In the context of hip hop, mixtapes are generally collections of songs released for free and often contain mostly freestyles over instrumentals of existing songs by other artists. They're also not generally promoted. 'If You're Reading This It's Too Late' was released as a paid download so that it 'technically' counts as an album allowing him to be free of his 4-album record deal (at least according to popular rumours) but it is not intended to be the actual follow-up to 'Nothing Was The Same'.
Yeh I know I've heard a few of Dizzee Rascals mixtapes just couldn't describe it as well as yourself Bre :P
