Posted December 30, 201410 yr Welcome chart forum readers to everyone's favourite annual event (once a year, all year), the Points Chart! We even have a banner this year: http://i.imgur.com/GuFkqXX.png (designed by Joseph if you couldn't tell by the disproportionate prominence of Cheryl) ANYHOW, if you don't know how this works by now I'll briefly go through it again. This thread is basically an alternative end of year chart, based not on total sales and streams but instead on chart longevity. I have taken the top 100 singles and albums for each week of 2014 (as laboriously determined by the Official Charts Company and used in this thread without permission) and run them through an Excel spreadsheet which assigns 100 points for a week at #1, 99 for a week at #2 and so on down to 1 point for a week at #100. Tally together the points achieved each week by each song and album and put them into a list format and this is what comes out. The charts covered by this thread are W/E 11/01/2014 (when Pitbull and Ke$ha debuted at #1 with 'Timber', while Ellie Goulding ascended to #1 for the first time with 'Halcyon') through to W/E 03/01/2015 (when Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars returned for a second week at #1 with 'Uptown Funk' while Ed Sheeran's 'x' held at #1 for a 12th non-consecutive week). The format is the same as last year's - we'll be counting down the top 200 songs of the year and the top 50 albums (the latter in parallel to the top 50 of the singles countdown) and hopefully it won't take 11 months this time. There are no prizes for guessing this year's #1 song by the way. 769 different songs made the top 100 for at least a week this year, a big decline on the 874 that managed it in 2013 (no doubt caused in part by the addition of streaming in the latter half of the year making it more difficult for minor releases to make it past the entirety of Ed Sheeran's album). 20 songs cracked 2,000 points, 7 more than last year, while 77 songs achieved over 1,000 points, 3 more than last year. The Vamps are at #200 representing "good" (and are the polar opposites of ugly :ph34r:) with their debut single (and best single) Can We Dance. All five Vamps singles appear in the top 200 so 2014 was a very good year for them, and rightfully so. Can We Dance made it no higher than #38 in 2014 but had good enough top 100 longevity for it to appear here. G'won boys. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis appear next with their only 2014 single, representing "bad". White Walls did considerably less well than their first three hits, getting no higher than #26, which I can't really say I'm particularly shocked at, it's a lot weaker than the other three (Thrift Shop is awful IMO but at least has the novelty factor to make it interesting). Chris Brown gives us the "ugly" with New Flame. This is where Bray would say something about "Ricky Ross "The Bawse"" but I think I'll pass. I've never heard #197 but it's a Frozen track so I can make an educated guess that it's crap. Finally, we head back to the "good" side of this section with Gorgon City, who with this track, brought Laura Welsh into the top 40 for the first time. Here For You sadly wasn't a particularly big hit in the long run, losing a top 40 week due to streaming, but has at least done better than the two follow-up tracks Unmissable and Go All Night.

SevenSeize's fave 'Sunlight' by The Magician and Sound of 2015 nominees Years & Years is at #195, not catching on as much as some of the year's other dance hits. Ella Henderson has just about managed to get all 3 of her singles into the top 200 (maybe that'll be enough to stop her from being dropped?... nah), perhaps surprisingly 'Glow' was overtaken by 'Yours' despite its top 10 peak. Poor brave 'Glow', still my favourite of her singles even if that's a minority opinion. Then there's Example at #192 with 'One More Day (Stay With Me)', a return to form for him both musically and chart-wise. It at least proved Example can still appeal to people outside his fanbase even if only for a very short period. Elsewhere we have Lily Allen's 2013 John Lewis ad song which is higher here than all but one of the other 'Sheezus' singles, and Rihanna's 'What Now' which somehow rebounded up the chart to a new peak of #21 at the start of the year for reasons that no one could ever figure out :unsure:

Nicole seems to have stopped making pop BANGERS like Poison and Don't Hold Your Breath and has now switched to very bland pop instead. Your Love was one of the best of quite an average bunch on her album, sadly. Flo Rida's...thing....is at #189. Not sure it's much of a song really. Jameela struggled to not shade the track when it charted and I'm similar right now lol, there really is no defending it. It got released on one of the busiest weeks this year, beaten by DVBBS & Borgeous and Enrique Iglesias but somehow outcharting Pixie Lott, Kylie Minogue and Christina Perri. Jamie T sneaked into the top 40 earlier this year with single Zombie, quite a nice track and did relatively well considering he's not really been around in a little while. Raleigh Ritchie also had a blink-and-you'll-miss-it top 40 hit with Stronger Than Ever, after it featured on an ITV Drama advert. And finally, The Pogues lose for a second year running as Mariah beats them despite having a lower 2014 peak and no 19p price reduction cheating :cheer:

Great songs that missed out of course (e.g German Whip, Rariworkout etc) but in retrospect its great they even charted at all. I'd forgotten all about that Flo Rida song :lol: Seems longer ago than March.

Then she evidently said fuck it and released 'Anaconda' which performed a lot better worldwide. Take from that what you will. 'Pills N Potions' is #185 here. Duke Dumont just missed out on a third straight #1 with 'Won't Look Back', dodging a bullet really as it may have become one of the select few #1s to drop out of the top 10 from the top spot. The song is certainly a lot weaker than the previous #1s, essentially just a very inferior 'Ride On Time'. mr_aly's fave is up next with Labrinth making it to #183 off just five weeks of chart action with 'Jealous' (the most depressing song in the world http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-xpa1/t5.0-1/41787_138659892838767_2273_q.jpg), it's hard to believe it's by the same guy from 'Pass Out' and 'Earthquake'. The Biebs chose 'Confident' (easily the best of the Music Mondays/'Journals' tracks) to give a proper big single push, unfortunately it couldn't quite crack the top 40 again but its second chart run did match the length of all the original Music Mondays runs combined which is a thing. The song is still the only chart appearance for Chance The Rapper who was nominated for Sound of 2013 and proceeded to not release anything AFAIA. Shame. Finally at #181 is the defining chart moment of the year and possibly my favourite song of 2014, Ten Walls' anthemic 'Walking With Elephants'. The first proper instrumental top 10 hit for God knows how long and the first ever chart appearance for a Lithuanian act, the song seemed almost like the antithesis of a UK hit single but generous Radio 1 support helped it smash all expectations and amazingly get as high as number six. I engineered this thread to make sure I got to comment on this song and an unfortunate side effect is that Joseph gets both The Pogues and Mariah. Don't listen to him on those ok.

There are a few which missed the top 200 so it has gone by already! Ben Haenow is the lowest at #284 but he only had 2 weeks to gain chart points so that's not entirely fair. Gareth Malone's All Star Choir are (by far) the lowest out of songs that had a full chart run, at #259, while Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars also fell a bit short of the top 200 at #229 again due to only having a few weeks. The other 35 #1s are all yet to be revealed.
