4. Milky Chance - Stolen Dance

Top 40 weeks: 5

Just outside the podium positions we have German duo Milky Chance with their globally successful single Stolen Dance. This was somewhat a sleeper hit here with it gradually conquering mainland Europe during 2013 before finally charting on our shores early last summer. I'm a bit on the fence with this one, I can definitely see the appeal, in fact a lot of people I know like it and it's quite a unique track in terms of vocals and production (certainly when viewed against the majority of commercially successful tracks). That said, I really dislike the dreary delivery in the verses. I get the laid-back approach they're presumably going for but it doesn't come across well for me. I also don't recall this getting much hype/praise on here at the time so I'm quite surprised to see this finish so high. Stolen Dance ends up as the highest ranking track by (a) male artist(s) leaving perhaps predictably an all-female top 3.

So our final three is:

If I Could Change Your Mind vs. West Coast vs. Team

To be revealed this evening, who will win?!

Desire is a good choice for a follow-up to Sunlight, but really their best track has to be King :cheer:

And Stolen Dance is also a pretty cool track :D

I never realized that "No Enemiesz" had a video, oops

iirc it was posted fairly late

TEAM FOR #1 PLEASE! :cheer:

An excellent top 3 to be honest; I adore all three tracks!!

But I would really like HAIM or Lana to battle for the #1 as they were my top 2 (HAIM - 10pts and LANA - 9pts)...

All of the top 6 i gave points to so very happy with the outcome!

This is an extremely strong top 4. I've had 'Stolen Dance' stuck in my head a lot again recently, really great laidback summery tune, kinda surprised to see it so high here though!

Any of the remaining 3 would be a great winner, obviously throwing my main support behind Queen Lorde but 'If I Could Change Your Mind' wasn't far behind it in my votes and 'West Coast' is fab too though I'd prefer for that to be third out of them.

3. Lana Del Rey - West Coast

Score: 118

Peak: 21

Top 40 weeks: 4

Stats:

Number of votes: 21

Highest score: +10 - brokenrecords, harryflynn0908 & Ultraviolence1989

Average score per voter: 5.62 (13th)

Average score overall: 3.11

So in third position it's Lana Del Rey with lead single from her successful Ultraviolence album. Despite not being a huge fan of this type of music in general I have usually loved her output, particularly from Born To Die so was really interested to see how she would follow it up. This track took a while to grow on me but I really love her sultry vocals and the chilling production. It's quite an interesting record in terms of structure too, with a time change between the verses and chorus but for me that's part of the overall appeal. It was a shame to see this narrowly miss the top 20, it's probably my favourite track in this final I didn't give points to. Winner of Group C, this is the only track in the top 6 not from Group B so it's clear to see where most of the favourites were initially placed! Despite a relatively low average score per voter it racked up 21 votes in total and three +10 scores to finish in a fine third place.

Let us all appreciate this far superior version of West Coast...

So our 2014 runners-up are US band HAIM with their fifth single from debut album Days Are Gone. HAIM did very well to get four top 40 hits out of the album, all of which proved to be very popular. This is another track which brought a nice change of pace to the chart and it's good to see their singles getting success here as none have yet broke the Billboard 100. Their album also narrowly beat Justin Timberlake to the #1 spot in one of the closest battles in recent memory. For me this track is good but no more, something I wouldn't be rushing to play myself but wouldn't mind if I heard it on the radio (much like their first three singles). Ultimately it couldn't change my mind. Personally I much prefer The Wire, that track really is fantastic. This song finished second to Lorde's Team in the Group stages too so there was so be no turnaround here and is of course the highest ranking song by a group. In all, not a bad performance by any means!

:cheer: And our winner is! :cheer:

Which means your 2014 champion is Lorde with her worldwide smash single Team. This Kiwi sensation really exploded in 2013 with signature track Royals gradually conquering the world and with Team not too far behind. I was both surprised and disappointed this didn't perform much better here as its #29 peak is pretty unjust. I really like this song (much prefer it to Royals ), you cannot dismiss that beat! Interestingly I probably prefer the verses over the chorus in this but as an overall package it's a superb record and a very worthy winner, plus the stats really say it all. Team received the most votes, the most +10s, had the highest average score per voter rank and was also by far the highest scorer across all three Groups in the first rounds. It finishes here with a winning margin of 20 so it's safe to say this is an undisputed champion! This more than makes up for its commercial underperformance :D Very well done, we're all inside this team!

Perfect top 2 there then! Hooray for being in tune with the tastes of the general chart forum public for once.

Interesting that the top 2 are the same both on points and average points per voter, you'd expect the highest points per voter to be something a bit more niche and further down!

West coast is an absolute beauty of a song, definitley one of the best of last year  Still gutted it missed the top 20

Wish Haim won over Lorde, If I could change your mind is also so amazing
