Pointless setting a global release day for singles (allegedly to stop music piracy) if they're going to continue to hold them back for months on end here~

I hope this spells the end for the single pre-order culture, with OA/OS embraced as the future! However I wouldn't be surprised if the chart week was moved to Fri-Thur only for the UK to continue to lag months behind the rest of the world for the latest releases...

I share your pain :(

oooh... Christmas Day falls on a Friday this year... mind you I'm sure we had a similar situation on a Sunday, most likely it be a condensed show, if the show gets moved.

Which means unless there's a change to the X-Factor, they'd only have more or less 4 days of digital sales and two days of physical sales at a guess, makes the Christmas charts that more interesting if this happens

They better not put it on Friday's and take away Greg's show, Dance Anthems and Anne Mac's.

I'm hoping it stays on Sundays and I do think there's a chance that it will. In the US we're used to waiting a couple days for the new week's charts so it'd be no different for the UK. Saturday is maybe more likely, and possibly an earlier timeslot if so. If it was Friday I'd have to stop listening live :drama: Time zone problems.
There's no way radio 1 will have the chart on a Friday afternoon 4-7 drive time slot this is a huge audience time with Greg James' show very popular. They will just have the chart week ending on Thursday with the chart not announced until the Sunday afternoon. Audience is massive to radio stations and the drive time shows in mornings and evenings having the highest earning djs etc so they won't stick the chart in the middle of it all!

Assuming the OCC publish the chart on the Friday evening, it would pretty much kill the R1 chart show if it remained on Sunday - everyone would already know...

I have the same doubts - the UK music industry is geared around big first week singles sales and they hold them back months. Releases are already random anyway - look at the availablity of singles this week, theyve been out on several different days. I suspect the world release will be for albums, and singles will just get held back from friday till sunday for 2 days, so nothing will change. Too many vested interests in radio collaborating to boost ratings for the charts.

Plus who the hell has time to listen to the charts on a friday! ratings would plummet. As someone else said, the only obvious alternative would be to bring a BBC TV TOTP highlights chart show (videos, if not live) and use that as the announcement, fridays before everyone goes out at 7 or 8 and then the full rundown on sundays. That would be the best thing for the music industry.

Suedehead answered this on just the previous page http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?s...t&p=4984218 :heehee: Both albums and singles will be released on Fridays!

i'm a cynic! If the UK music industry stops holding back singles releases and has a world release day for all tracks I will take part in the next world naked bike ride day painted as a teapot chanting "I will not doubt the integrity of the UK music machine ever again" until I've learned my lesson... :teresa:

Singles & Albums were released on Fridays all the way through the 40s to the early 80s. The BBC chart period was still Sun to Sat. Why should it be any different now? Don't get it.

If the sales period remains the same, record companies may be tempted to defy the agreement and release on a Monday to get a full first week's sales in the same chart week. That's why I am pretty sure the OCC will change the chart week.

I like the sound of the global release date but hate the idea of the chart on a Friday, it's such a tradition and a good time to unwind being on a Sunday. :( Hopefully they come to a decent agreement.

How exactly would ratings plummet? I imagine the Friday drivetime slot gets a lot more listeners than the current Sunday 4-7 slot for the chart show, though I don't have any figures to back this up.

I just hope we don't get Greg James becoming the weekly chart show host simply if the chart moves to Friday, he currently does weekday drivetime but he could do Monday - Thursday and then Sunday to let Clara continue with the show.

Agreed, Clara is a fantastic host.

I just read that Clara is doing the weekday 10 - 1 slot so I can't see her doing the 4 - 7 on Friday as well.

I think the most likely situation is the chart still gets announced on Sunday

The chart would get more listeners 4-7 on a Friday, but I bet it'd get less listeners than Greg James' current slot does. R1 aren't going to want to mess with a successful format and replace it with a dull countdown of the top 40. I could see them having Greg just doing the top 40 new entries + the top 10 from 6-7pm though. I really think the 3 hour top 40 show is about to come to an end guys.

I wonder what'll happen with Big Top 40. I suppose they don't have much choice other than to stay on a Sunday, and I suppose they'll still be nearly a week "ahead" of the official chart.

It was much the same prior to Oct 1987 though. The chart was released on a Tuesday, yet the 'flagship' chart show wan't until the following Sunday, a whole 5 days later. Obviously you couldn't find out the new chart by clicking on the OCC website but the chart was announced on the Tuesday lunchtime and again that evening. Many newpapers would carry the chart on the Wednesday morning, and of course there was TOTP on Thursday evening. More than enough opportunity for people to know what the new chart was, but they still listened on the Sunday.

I can't see anything changing with regards to Radio 1's schedule tbh - I think the chart will still be 4-7, and we'll just have to wait a couple of extra days for the reveal rather than hours.
It's no big deal waiting til Sunday and knowing the chart only chart geeks like us would be annoyed ;)

Clara would probably get Friday mornings off if they did 4-7 Friday.
