KOKIA - Arigatou...

giphy.gif

Tonight the entries for the fifth BJSC Worldvision spin-off were announced in Danæviia! We were assigned Japan this time (following Belgium, Finland, Morocco and Monaco in past editions) which we were happy with, as we've dipped our toes in the musical world of this nation quite a few times previously anyway. We chose 'Arigatou...' by KOKIA after stumbling across a few different songs by this artist. It's a beautiful ballad mixing soft vocals and piano production together. 'Arigatō...' takes us back to 1999! KOKIA was very young at the time, debuting in the industry the year before while still at University. She is known for contributing to anime and game soundtracks over the years. 'Arigatō...' is not an anime or video game song though, as far as I'm aware, just taken from an album of hers. But the fan-made video I sent in comprises of clips from 'Violet Evergarden', as it was the most HQ upload of the song I could find, plus these clips work pretty well. We won the first Worldvision but haven't been close to the top 10 since then... here's to making a comeback! Maybe. We hope this entry can find a few big fans as the Jadakissnian people find it captivating.

Our history in Worldvision:

I - SOLDOUT - To The Ocean (Belgium) - WINNER

II - Epelit - Flippaa & kriippaa (Finland) - 29th

III - Samira Said - Mazal (Morocco) - 18th

IV - Christine Walevska - Suite for Cello and Orchestra, Op.16 - 4. Romance (molto adagio) (feat. Orchestre National de l'Opera de Monte-Carlo and Eliahu Inbal) (Monaco) - 18th

V - KOKIA - Arigatou... - (Japan) TBA

Hante. - Wild Animal

We're back to more of a classic Jadakissnia sound this month! Also known as... dark and synthy. I don't think we have specifically sent a song from the darkwave genre before though! So that's something a bit fresh. Hante. is a one-woman project courtesy of Hélène de Thoury. Her style is described as 'Parisian darkwave'. 'Hante.' literally translates to 'haunt' so you can be sure that we've sent something a bit spooky. Maybe not the most appropriate time of year but oh well. She explained in an interview that she was inspired to write 'Wild Animal' after watching a documentary called I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead about the producer Steve Aoki. In this, he finds out that one of his best friends has died but he has to play later that night. He goes ahead with the gig and at one point the audience notice that he's crying. She says 'Wild Animal' is about this moment where you can't hold back your emotions. The video is equally intense as it explores someone trapped between dream and reality. We hope you guys will enjoy this one! This is our 53rd entry to date and can be found in slot 7 of semi 1. Fingers crossed that we can extend our current record-breaking Q streak of 12 even further!

KOKIA - Arigatou...

kokia-600x330.jpg

Unfortunately our Japanese representative KOKIA did not quite set the contest alight in Worldvision V! In fact 'Arigatou...' was our worst performing Worldvision entry ever. Oops. We finished 33rd with 70 points. So we narrowly avoided the bottom 5 but that's just about the only good news! It's a shame that this didn't connect more. We did at least receive one medal position courtesy of Wholune, so we're glad that this beautiful ballad was at least popular in that nation! In better news, it was Séyetana who took the crown with their Ukranian entry 'Chip Chip' by Fat Frumos. We're pleased with this winner as we awarded this entry 11 points. A huge congrats to them! Our 18 this time was Land of DW's short but epic 'Ari Im Sokhag' by Serj Tankian featuring Larisa Ryan, representing Armenia. This finished in a frustrating 21st place! Our silver medal then went to Persephonia with Belgian representatives La Jungle with 'The Knight The Doom' - a powerful guitar entry. This smashed its way to 9th place. Our bronze was then Aesthetica who represented Portugal with Armando Mendes' 'Mae Nam'. This finished just a couple of spots ahead of Land of DW in 19th place! Well done to our favourites for doing much better than us :kink:

Thanks to the following nations for the points:

15 - Wholune

12 - Lotunia

11 - Trifoski

10 - Aesthetica

8 - Republic of Adonia + Persephonia

3 - Hushkanukia + Séyetena

Hante. - Wild Animal

d9a3_3.jpg

Last night the final results took place in Altyr Muunilinst following their win last month with Nova Miller! We were represented by the darkwave song 'Wild Animal' by Hante. We experienced a slow start but thankfully the votes began to arrive en masse during the second half of proceedings. 'Wild Animal' ended up finishing in 8th place with 272 points! The people of Jadakissnia are absolutely thrilled with this result. We have now achieved 20 top 10 finishes during our five years of competing. This is our third top 10 result in 2020 - following 10th place in 121 with 'Tennis Fan' by Banoffee featuring Empress Of and 6th place in 122 with 'Let You Go' by WILDES. This may be our second best finish of the year position-wise but we smashed it out of the park with 'Wild Animal' in terms of points! It was a hefty haul for an 8th place hit for sure. In fact, these 272 points mean that 'Wild Animal' is within our top 5 highest scoring entries ever! It even outdid our winner from last year :o Here's what that top 10 looks like:

Highest scoring Jadakissnia finalists

01. MssingNo - Scope {323 points} ● 3rd place

02. HÆLOS - Earth Not Above {296 points} ● 2nd place

03. BÖ - Waqqaberry {290 points} ● 3rd place

04. Pharao - I Show You Secrets {284 points} ● 3rd place

05. Hante. - Wild Animal {272 points} ● 8th place

06. Active Child - All Eyes On You {270 points} ● 3rd place

=07. Rompasso - Ignis {264 points} ● 1st place

=07. Somnium - Sinking {264 points} ● 2nd place

09. BLVCK CEILING - WVFFLIFE (CHVRN Remix) {262 points} ● 6th place

10. Francis and the Lights - See Her Out (That's Just Life) {261 points} ● 14th place

^ 'See Her Out (That's Just Life)' was such a high scoring 14th place due to the understandably high amount of participants / voters in BJSC 100!

What. a. TRIUMPH! We're so pleased that it managed to hoover up so many points. This included a whopping 9 medal positions! Thanks so much to Aelandor and Skall for the 18s, Lotunia and Persephonia for the 15s and Aeroche, Bøtanikkä, Suedeonia, Terra Avium and Utopia for the 13s. 8th was not a unique position for us but it has been 4 years since we last achieved it! Our previous two 8th place finishes were in 2016, those are: 'Yo Quiero Bailar' by Sonia y Selena (BJSC 81) and 'Toccata' by OVERWERK (BJSC 85)! The former is about as far from spooky as you can get, but the latter definitely joins 'Wild Animal' in being appropriate for Halloween with its crashing dark synths. We really didn't envision a top 10 finish for this entry at all when confirming it, so that has made us appreciate this achievement even more. Spirits are VERY high in Jadakissnia right now!

Thanks to the following nations for the points:

18 - Aelandor + Skall

15 - Lotunia + Persephonia

13 - Aeroche, Bøtanikkä, Suedeonia, Terra Avium + Utopia

12 - POPHub, Tartford + Vülkyria

11 - Republic of Adonia + Séyetana

10 - Niceland

9 - Rolloland + Summericia

8 - Numayania

7 - Danæviia + Fljótavík

6 - Thelonia

4 - East Rukahavian, Land of DW, Kluminican Republic, Kylienips + St. Burbia

3 - United States of Jack

2 - Cor Lupus + Trifoski

The fantastic news did not end with our own placement! This is because our 18 only went and won the whole contest too :o serial gold medallists Aeroche added another one to their tally with the deliciously dark 'Ghostkeeper' by Klangkarussell & GIVVEN! This song charted in Jadakissnia prior to being submitted to the contest and it gained even more love with our people this time around. This is the second time that we have awarded 18 points to an Aeroche winner - the previous instance was in BJSC 100 when TR/ST took the trophy with 'Capitol'. A huge congratulations to them! We can't wait to travel to Aeroche again. Our silver medallist this time was 'Substancja' by JUTRØ, courtesy of Terra Avium! JUTRØ actually received our gold medal way back in BJSC 92 with Republic of Adonia entry 'Travva'. We were excited to hear this new song off the back of that and it thankfully impressed us indeed, as you can see from the medal. Dare we say that it improved the original 'Where Have You Been?' by Rihanna! Terra finished in 12th, outdoing the previous JUTRØ result, however this is entirely due to Math not voting that time :kink: 'Travva' finished 11th pre-deduction, so the consistency is very impressive. Our bronze medal also achieved a fantastic result! This was Russian banger 'Plachu Na Tekhno' by Cream Soda & HLEB - sent by Land of DW. They finished in 6th place!

These were our own votes:

Tempers - Hell Hotline

Oops I'm a bit late to introducing my entry here this month! Our dark phase is very much continuing on from 'Wild Animal' last month. This time we have sent 'Hell Hotline' by American band Tempers. Their style is dark synth-pop with post-punk influences, so right up my street as you can imagine. I know it's a little early for Halloween but we hope this spooky, gritty banger can find some big fans. The video is NOT easy on the eyes with all the intense lights and even comes with an epilepsy warning. As this is a bit later than usual, we already know that we have qualified for the final, so thank you everyone! This is our 14th qualifier in a row :o a personal best for Jadakissnia. We still tie with Altyr Muunilinst and Hushkanukia at the top of the qualifying streak list for another month. This is our 47th qualifier to date out of our 54 total entries! Here's to avoiding a first ever bottom 5 finish - that would be a little disappointing exactly a year after we won :P We have been drawn in slot #31.

We lost these from the semi finals:

STACEY - DMT

DNQ {25th in semi | 25 points}

So, dark synth-pop meets post-punk and psychedelic dream-pop were certainly fun avenues to travel down but not exactly our most successful moves. Tempers resulted in a second 37th place for Jadakissnia this year, random but hey still a qualifier! Sadly, STACEY didn't make the cut and our record-breaking streak of 14 qualifiers in a row came to an end. She's our 8th DNQ to date. At least our good friends Hushkanukia also faced the same wrath so we fell from the top of that streak list in style together.

ISON - ISAE

So, we're usually pretty good at bouncing back from DNQs. We've never had back-to-back ones before and have actually achieved several top 10s following non-qualifiers. So you'd think I'd want to keep that up. Well, not really, as we stumbled across something so majestic that we didn't care about how it would do. I suppose it could find some like-minded big fans (we already see a couple of you in the semi-final thread :o) but on paper it does not sound like a conventional ticket to the final at all, especially during this era where pop has made a huge comeback. ISON are a Swedish duo specialising in post-rock, shoegaze and drone kind of music. There have been some post-rock hits in the past but this song feels way less in your face. It's one to get lost in - a totally ethereal experience that made me feel emotional from listen one, with lyrics like "I don't know where I belong" set to the most gorgeous beats and guitars - some of the pangs remind me of the guitar sound you'd find in some Lana Del Rey songs. Plus the vocalist has such a gripping voice with a layered effect. It's 7 minutes long too so our lengthiest in a while. The video is "not professionally made" as stated in the description but you could've fooled me otherwise! It features vocalist Heike in amongst stunning Swedish scenery. I hope enough of you in semi 2 enjoy this haunting, melancholic offering from us. We can be found in slot #4.

BJSC Halloween III

In Letter Form - Terror (Is A State Of Mind)

The third Halloween spin-off has arrived in the BJSC world! We have an amazing track record in this spin-off as 'Blood Blood Blood !!!' by Unison finished 7th in the the first, then we did even better in the 2nd edition with 'Black' by The M Machine - that finished 5th. Now the pressure is on to keep up that 100% top 10 streak! Our selection for the third is once again something different. We went for metal with Unison, electronic music for The M Machine and now it's post-punk with this brand new entry from In Letter Form! I've really been getting into this sound more lately - as seen by recent main contest entry 'Hell Hotline' from Tempers. In Letter Form have been compared to some greats in the field like Bauhaus, The Cure and New Order. I was flicking through a Goth Halloween playlist and this song 'Terror (Is A State Of Mind)' really stood out to me - that chorus is a stormer! Plus I'm a sucker for that blend of heavy guitars and witchy synth sound meeting together in the production. I think the video is fan-made but works well. Be warned, there are some strobe lights, a needle and spiders! But those things are off-set by the greatness of a quick feline inclusion. We hope some of you guys will enjoy this as much as I do!

  • Author

It has come to my attention that some of you guys aren't sure what some of the lyrics for 'ISAE' are, which is understandable, so here they are:

Hold me under - I’m still breathing

I know I've been here before

Lost for hours - I search for meaning

I don’t know what’s real anymore

I don’t know where I belong

It’s only the way I’m feeling

Something’s always wrong

And I don’t know where I came from

I see it when i’m dreaming

I’m somewhere far from home

To be lost and always so alone

In a world I don’t know

Pull me out from all these visions

Does it ever go away?

Lost in time-lines and soul collisions

Sometimes I feel so afraid

I don’t know where i belong

Forever a lucid feeling

I'm always out of place

And i don’t know where i came from

I see it when I’m dreaming

Another time and space

Wow I let this thread flop again. We've now reached the end of the competing year, here's our last few results...

BJSC Halloween III

In Letter Form - Terror (Is A State Of Mind)

3rd place | 205 points

Cannot believe how well this did!! :cheeseblock: Our Halloween spin-off trajectory is now 07-05-03 which is immensely satisfying.

BJSC 129

ISON - ISAE

21st place | 183 points

8th place in semi | 77 points ● 48th qualifier to date

We initially thought this would DNQ so our expectations were definitely surpassed with that qualification! However, 21st in the final did end up feeling a little disappointing as hype grew throughout the contest and some odds had it quite a bit higher than that. Still, not bad at all and would end up as our 6th best result of the year.

BJSC 130

Nürnberg - Rasplyvajecca

19th place | 174 points

19th place in semi | 54 points ● 49th qualifier to date

This outdid our expectations in every way!! We were so mentally prepared to DNQ. Turns out this was only 2 points away from not making it so we had every right to feel that way! However, it flourished in the final with a top 20 placing. I'm pleased that BJSC was so on board with a male vocal Belarusian post-punk entry. YESS!!

Our 33rd top 20 finish to date *.*

Here's to 2021 and a landmark 50th qualifier!

Final 2020 results:

121: Banoffee - Tennis Fan (feat. Empress Of) - 10th place

122: WILDES - Let You Go - 6th place

123: Aphex Twin - Ageispolis (50th anniversary entry) - 23rd place

124: Real Lies - Boss Trick - 14th place

125: BETHY! - Utopia - 37th place

126: Hante. - Wild Animal - 8th place

127: Tempers - Hell Hotline - 37th place

128: STACEY - DMT - DNQ

129: ISON - ISAE - 21st place

130: Nürnberg - Rasplyvajecca - 19th place

Thanks for the support this year! A total mixed bag of results but that did include 3 top 10s *.*

BJSC 131

Trudge - strast'

Errrrm so we just got our second longest entry ever through to the BJSC 131 final! Only Shpongle required more of your listening time in Jadakissnian history back in 2018 with 'Around The World In A Tea Daze (Ott Remix)'. That clocked in at 8 minutes 25 seconds while this Trudge song is a 'mere' 7 minutes 53 seconds. This time we sent a French artist with a Cyrillic title and English vocals, lol. But this song mostly comprises of instrumental! A pretty banging techno one at that. The soft, spoken intro swiftly gets nasty as she explains "I can't wait to watch life tear you apart..." then BAM those in-your-face beats arrive. Several minutes of those plus bleeps, bloops and general witchiness are the listening experience. The original music video was taken down and eventually returned with some replaced clips as apparently the original issue was down to the use of certain footage. Glad it still exists in some form even if that's a bit of a questionable thumbnail! Anyway - enough of you guys in semi 2 were into this for us to advance, so thank you. We start our 2021 off on an extremely positive note with a landmark 50th qualifier to date *.* :cheer:
