Vialli joined Chelsea on a free transfer in 1996 and became player-manager in 1998 - the first Italian to manage a Premier League side, taking over from the sacked Ruud Gullit late in the season - and went on to lead the Blues to victory in the League Cup, Uefa Cup Winners' Cup and Uefa Super Cup.

Italian skier Elena Fanchini, whose career was cut short by a tumor, has died. She was 37.

 

 

Fanchini won a silver medal in downhill at the 2005 world championships and also won two World Cup races in her career – both in downhill.

Christian Atsu has been found dead under the rubble of his home almost two weeks after the Turkey earthquake, his agent has confirmed.

 

The Ghana international, 31, had spells with Premier League sides Everton, Chelsea and Newcastle.

 

Atsu had been missing since the 6 February quake that caused the collapse of his apartment in Antakya, Hatay.

 

"There are no words to describe our sadness," tweeted his Turkish top-flight club Hatayspor.

 

"We will not forget you, Atsu. Peace be upon you, beautiful person."

Football commentator John Motson has died aged 77. He covered 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships and 29 FA Cup finals for BBC Sport before retiring from the organisation in 2018.

 

Popularly known as 'Motty', he had worked on Match of the Day since 1971.

Fabio Capello’s former assistant manager Italo Galbiati has died at the age of 85, it has been announced.

 

Galbiati worked as part of Capello's backroom staff when the Italian was in charge of England between 2007 and 2012.

 

He also worked with Capello at Real Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan and Roma.

Dick Fosbury, the man who revolutionised the high jump (with his flop) has died aged 76. He featured in a question on Only Connect tonight :(

Former NFL star Chris Smith has died, his agent announced on Twitter. He was 31.

 

Smith, who was a former defensive lineman for the Cleveland Browns, spent eight years in the NFL and played for multiple teams including the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Cincinnati Bengals and the Las Vegas Raiders.

 

His cause of death was not immediately known.

American sprinter Tori Bowie, a three-time Olympic medallist and former 100m world champion, has died aged 32.

 

Bowie won 4x100m relay gold at the Rio 2016 Olympics, plus 100m silver and 200m bronze.

 

The following year, she won the global title over 100m at the World Championships in London, as well as relay gold.
