You know that feeling when you tell a joke that you think is funny and it turns out everyone’s laughing at you and not with you? That’s what these results felt like.

It’s very clear that there’s a huge disconnect between us and the rest of BJSC. Nothing seems to stick anymore. Cor Lupus seems to have been successfully phased out. We’ve not reached our Witness era. What did we do wrong? What can we do better?

Next contest: Maybe post potentials? Go for a meltdown entry? Descend further into darkness as Halloween approaches? It’s not like you’ll like our entries anyway so might as well switch gears to “full send or not at all” :(

Sublab & Imallryt - Next to Me

Last year's Halloween-inspired entry was based on ambiance, this year it's based on lyrics. That conflict against inner demons, that whoosh of dread, that sinking feeling that the #CorLupusIsOverParty will come back to haunt us again?

Does it seem like we've given up this year? Maybe. We know you won't like this entry and that it won't do well like we've been doing most of the year. Hopefully some of you will prove us wrong.

Still tons of potential for this to be a flop or a mediocre position at best but we got through the first hurdle thankfully :P off to the final!

As expected, we flopped. Again.

The one positive we can take from this is we're finally seeing the existence of a fandom in Land of DW, who have given us three 18's in the last four contests. Unlikely pairing right there.

With that said, I don't expect many more entries in the future to do well now. Cor Lupus this year went from a successful country to... almost nugu. Almost invisible. How the mighty have fallen.

Next contest: Probably something throwaway so that I can plan a comeback next year. Cor Lupus making more comebacks than TWICE at this rate :P

bexx - Hard To Love

Remember that bid to do better next year because this year was a total wash and starting our comeback with a fresh new (hopeful) contender? Yeah we got vetoed three times so that plan is sunk. In the end we went with an 80's tinged number that was confirmed after two listens into the late night. Yeah, no way in hell will this qualify. It'll probably be lucky to even manage the top half of DNQ's. Let's just hope that we get a fan or two.

WHOA… WE QUALIFIED!

57ABAA.gif

I really was not expecting this! Definitely thought a more experimental meta would have worked against it but this managed to pull through! Thanks to everyone for the support!

9/10 qualifiers for the year... not bad, but not perfect. And certainly not at the level we should be at.

So after thinking we were not gonna qualify and once we did think that the song was gonna be dead on arrival, it was nice seeing it become a hit. Fortunate for us it was a hit, but unfortunately it was only our third, capping off a very lackluster year full of underperformances.

Despite the good performance this contest, we expect the next year to be more of the same: non-ideal end games for songs that deserve so much more.

Next contest: January can't come soon enough. We need to shake off this flop year with something good.

CORLUPUS2021: HOW TO DESTROY YOUR BJSC REPUTATION IN 10 CONTESTS

At first I had a pretty hard time with how to start off this write-up but then I realized that How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days was a pretty apt comparison. Because this was how it felt to lose your entire reputation in 10 contests. This year was pretty much the year where the meta shifted so many times that it felt like whatever I sent was just gonna fall to the wayside and that Cor Lupus would eventually be forgotten by the end of the year. And it was like that... to an extent. Only one top 10 hit, a further two entries that could be considered hits, and everything else pretty much crashed and burned. I was doing so bad that it got to the point where I was surprised when people voiced their support for my entries and how much they liked them. This was also the year where we did a bit of a soft rebrand, which was basically just a flag change where I turned on dark mode and tried to send things that weren't under the typical Cor Lupus umbrella. Sometimes for the better and others for the worse. What resulted has been a year that has been... a complete disaster. Yeah, there's no getting by it, this was one of the most unsuccessful years for us probably... ever. But did this fall from grace happen out of nowhere, was it a long time coming, or was this all calculated to accentuate Cor Lupus as the "comeback kids"? We will never know.

All right... let's relive my pain, shall we?

So SICKOTOY... I think this was what started this presumed "fall from grace". It was another charming dance song and similar songs had done well (it was pretty much the third part of my eurodance trilogy consisting of In My Mind and Over & Over) but then it seemed like... no one was here for it? Yeah, that was the straw that broke the camel's back and made me overthink EVERYTHING about the contest. It might get some justice in Rejects but I'm not really expecting it. Yeah, disaster stated, moving on. This contest

That was when I decided to pull a Miley Cyrus Bangerz era and kinda rebrand myself, kill off the critic-friendly aspect of myself and go balls to the wall. The flag change was a representation of my new goal: to become the one BJSC country that everyone can root against. The presumed "big bad". And then the next contest saw Cor Lupus send something we've never sent before: foreign language scandipop. Part of me shouldn't be surprised that it got the hype that it did: it was melodramatic and VERY much melodic, and it was foreign language that saw us make a comeback. Again. In hindsight, as brilliant as the song is, I feel like I kinda sold out with this one. It was me trying something different, and I was rewarded for that, but it wasn't trying anything new. It was amusing to see people shocked at the song choice, though. That's a theme we'll talk about later.

So after a foray into madness, Dullshine was a return to familiar waters with a solid slice of indie pop. It was very instant and I didn't hesitate to confirm it. However, I was pretty much the only fan, it did horrible, moving on.

After... whatever clownery that was, I decided to go back into uncharted territory and send something that wasn't in the typical Cor Lupus umbrella. And I had a lot of "cheap, but at least it's something new" entries. Olga Seryabkina was pretty much a me take on whoever would typically send a Russian entry. A Cor Lupus version of an Eledan entry perhaps. And somehow people liked it. It got a massive amount of hype... but after loads of entries that got a lot of hype and massively underperformed, I was smarter and realized that hype DOESN'T MEAN SHIT when people don't support it as much. So when this flopped even harder IMO than Dullshine did, I wasn't surprised at all. I was empty. It wouldn't even be considered a flop in my book, but it did that badly compared to odds. That was when I knew the year was gonna be more of this clownery.

"Kissing Strangers" was very much "I want Holland-Oats validation" wrapped in a cute pop song. I think it would have gotten a few more points if Taahino voted. It's a nice, fun pop track, we need more of those in the contest. I highly doubt there would be though, since after last contest's semi results we might be seeing a mini pop exodus again. Sigh.

And then I decided to ditch pop. For the time being.

BJFest called and I had found "Taste Of You" a couple weeks prior to the contest but thought it would be a big risk seeing as REZZ did not have a good track record in the main contest. Dove Cameron, however, did, and I wanted to send another Disney Channel alum so this was perfect. AC was pretty much the most I thought it could do, and it was a nice transition to what would end up being my next entry...

Yeah, "Energy". Back to the "Cody sent this???" type of entry and reaction. To be fair... it was kind of a self recycle and kinda cheating but whatever. At this point, the full progression back to dance had taken full force, and the goal to be the big BJSC supervillain was... still to be discovered. I was surprised by who supported it. Countries who I didn't even aim for ended up loving it so much that they gave it high points. Basically... Frank, I love you. You made the second half of the contest worth it. That last entry went lower midtable which meant no one would remember it a few days after the contest. We'll just see if I'm right.

Now... "The Worship". This was easily my favorite main entry this year. If I could think of a single best foray into piano house, it would be this song. I heard it while browsing through my YouTube recommendations- loved it on first listen. Played it while on a drive to Disneyland- loved it even more. I was jumping out of my seat to send it. It came with a caveat however - at that time, I just knew I wasn't gonna do well in the contest no matter what I sent, and this was a nice balance between sending what I wanted to send and playing it safe. That's what my music taste is. I can't change that. And clearly the bookies shared the same sentiment. I thought I was surprised by where it came? ...so were they. The odds were looking like Cor Lupus would be pretty much forgotten and thrown away, then it qualified, and then it became my best performance in months. That is probably the happiest I had been with the contest since EVERGLOW won. The difference was back then I was on a mission - this felt like winning in Fortnite because the last person was stuck in the storm and nowhere near the circle.

I had already planned something in the dance umbrella for the next contest, but I was still knee deep into finding a dark enough entry in time for Halloween. I had remembered "Wasteland" as a prior potential and listened to it again. It sounded just as fresh as before, so I went with that. Just... f*ck y'all. I wasn't sure what to expect, but to find a potential that you loved so much that they peeked out from the depths of your mind to send them, and then having barely anyone else share the same sentiment (once again, Frank is the G.O.A.T)... it's just heartbreaking. And I think that led to me getting very disillusioned with the contest. At that time I was stuck between wanting to send something dark and desperately wanting to redeem myself, and that messed up my mind going into next contest.

Which leads me to 139. Everything else I discovered fell into two categories: they were good but not the vibe I was going for, or I got bored of them a minute in. I ran out of options and listened to "Next To Me" again. Remember that experimental dance entry I wanted to send? This was that time. I heard the lyrics and they were haunting. Just haunting enough to send as a proper spoopy entry and attach a clever narrative to it. And then as soon as I heard the other songs in the contest... I immediately regretted not sending it the contest before. I could have switched the two songs' order of entry, but I'm not sure OVRGRWN would have qualified had I sent it then. Everyone raved about how strong the contest was, and I agreed. Which meant I knew my song was going to flop. Props to Frank though, again. A 3rd 18 from him in four contests lightened my mood during the results show.

By contest 140, I had pretty much given up. The year was a total wash, which meant I knew I had to work even harder the next year to get back into BJSC's good graces, and I was back to having to make a comeback. Something I had done about 30 times before. And I was almost tired of the cycle. But the show must go on and I had to set up next year for me, so I went with another great track that was super instant. And that got vetoed. I reconfirmed about six more times that day, two of them on my own volition, and finally landed on "Hard To Love". It was very taxing, and by the time I landed on my final confirmation, I was OVER IT. I had pretty much given up on qualifying at that point. I was already struggling with finding any form of success for the year, and struggling to get an entry in nearly made me want to withdraw. I just stuck around and just hoped that someone would like it.

Then bexx managed to qualify while half of my faves across both semis were ejected. Then Joseph gave me a full 18. Clearly I don't know this contest. The two times that I had pretty much given up on qualifying/doing well were the two times I was surprised by my result in a good way.

So yeah. Ten main contests later and I'm left confused. The songs that I thought would work were met with general apathy, and the best results came from the entries I had zero confidence in. This year was an even bigger step down from last year. And with TBO pretty much showing me how far I've regressed in terms of success and quality, I find myself wondering what I even bring to the contest. Meltdowns and drama? Sure. But if our entries don't pick up a niche but dedicated fanbase AND the general public has lost interest, then we're basically invisible, and that means we hold absolutely no value to the contest and if we took a contest off, nobody would notice we left. Except for Bray and Wardy. They're like the BJSC analog to CCTV, I swear.

Maybe fate just does not want me to shake off the "comeback kid" label. Just like my music taste, I'm inconsistent and that's all I'll ever be. I'll let Wreck-It-Ralph say it because I'm too lazy to:

Wait, wait, hold the phone. My mission this year is not done. There's still one more entry. The Christmas entry. And I thought, if I'm going to really complete my villain origin story, I have to do it with a little bit of presentation. And I'm doing it the only way I know how: K-pop. So there you go. You've been warned.

XMAS IV | Stray Kids - Christmas EveL

"Feliz navidad feliz navidad i can feel the evel coming but Felix never bad" 🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌

Stray Kids have had a very weird history here. 2019 was both their best year and the first year of their artistic evolution when they released "MIROH" and "Side Effects" in consecutive comebacks. "Christmas EveL" is a continuation of that with it blending a few genres and calling it a day. Y'all will hate this, it will probably get last place, it might be lucky to escape the bottom 5, but the last 20 seconds of this track is worth it *.*

Merry Christmas 🎁🎁🎁🎁

MishCatt - Breakup Rituals

We’re breaking up!!!

…With 2021, that is. Introducing Costa Rican Artist MishCatt telling us that it’s ready to say thank u next to the horror show we call BJSC 2021. Hopefully we start off on the right foot this time but considering this is January (and we never do well in January) and there has been a lack of notable pop hoe countries, things have been up in the air. We’ll see though. We’ve been surprised before like last contest.

BJSC 141 | MishCatt - Breakup Rituals | 11th (200 points)

Finally starting off on the right foot for the year! And our first back-to-back hits since late 2020!

Next contest: Got a few pop, dance and “Cody sent this???” potentials but so far leaning towards the pop one. The pop one also connect very well to the video game concept we’ve had for a bit :P things could definitely change so keep your eyes peeled! This is a new beginning for us!

Congrats to TAROBell for (finally) breaking through the "I got into it after it impacted radio" wall and sending a PHENOMENAL EDM track!

Ooh happy to see Sophia Bel making your list  I was hoping for a bit better than 30th in the final with that one but at least it evidently had some big fans *.*
Happy to have 3 Sovarasman songs in your EOY ranking!

'what's known now' appearing in 3 different EOY lists, the impact :cheeseblock: (yay for ATARASHII GAKKO! getting some love too and even at the funny number).

I greatly approve of 'DIP N DRIP' being top 10 x

edit: this was my 102,000th post oh my

HARD FEELINGS - Sister Infinity

Well, after MishCatt did pretty well last contest, the pressure is on to actually keep that momentum instead of squandering it like we have ever contest since the last time we got back to back hits. What we ended up sending was… pretty unexpected. HARD FEELINGS’ last entry went over our heads, but this retro inspired bop took the country by the reigns and has now been selected for the contest. It’s less safe than what we had prepared; was it worth it?
