Disney taking a bit of a beating so far :( How the hell did Monsters University outdo Frozen?! Even with the overexposure, it's a genuinely great and standout movie.

#50: Shrek Forever After

Gross: $752,600,867

Rank on all-time list: #58

Rotten Tomatoes score: 58%

Rates: 10, 10, 6, 7, 7, 4 = 44

People who rated it: 6

Final score: 44/6*10 = 73.33

Kicking off the top half of the fourth and presumably final film of the Shrek franchise (there have been rumours by Jeffrey Katzenberg that a fifth film could be made). Anyway, surprisingly, despite generally not being as popular, Shrek Forever After has trumped Shrek 2 in this countdown.

#49: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Gross: $796,688,549

Rank on all-time list: #47

Rotten Tomatoes score: 91%

Rates: 5.5, -5, 9, 10, 7, 9, 7, 15, 8, 8 = 73.5

People who rated it: 10

Final score: 73.5/10*10 = 73.5

Despite being the lowest-grossing film of the series, it was the best-reviewed at the time and is considered by some critics and fans alike to be the best film of the series. Obviously not the case here.

#48: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Gross: $960,366,855

Rank on all-time list: #25

Rotten Tomatoes score: 74%

Rates: 9, 7, 8, 3, 7, 8, 7, 8, 8, 9 = 74

People who rated it: 10

Final score: 74/10*10 = 74

Despite being considered by critics and most fans to be a step up from An Unexpected Journey, it failed to join that film in the billion dollar grossing club. And ends up behind that film.

#47: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Gross: $896,911,078

Rank on all-time list: #33

Rotten Tomatoes score: 88%

Rates: 7, 9, 9, 6, 10, 15, -5, 8, 8 = 67

People who rated it: 9

Final score: 67/9*10 = 74.44

Another Harry Potter film in this section and the third to be eliminated.

#46: The Da Vinci Code

Gross: $758,239,851

Rank on all-time list: #56

Rotten Tomatoes score: 25%

Rates: 7, 7, 10, 6, 7, 8 = 45

People who rated it: 6

Final score: 45/6*10 = 75

An adaptation of a book which sold 80 million copies worldwide, which could place it in the top 10 best-selling books of all-time (if you discount the Lord of The Rings, which did sell more but was published as three volumes). Anyway, despite receiving terrible reviews, the film was a success.

Out of these I only like the Harry Potter films, but Prisoner Of Azkaban is my least fave out the HP movies though, I actually read the book and when I saw the film it felt rushed and didn't explain things properly.

The Da Vinci Code, again read the book, but found the film a total let down.

#45: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1

Gross: $960,283,305

Rank on all-time list: #27

Rotten Tomatoes score: 78%

Rates: 7, 8, 7, 7, 8, 9, 5, 9, 8 = 68

People who rated it: 9

Final score: 68/9*10 = 75.55

For the final Harry Potter book, the filmmakers decided to split it in two movies, a move that was again used for Breaking Dawn, Mockingjay and Allegiant. In both cases where both parts of a final book in a series appear in this countdown, Part 2 has beaten Part 1.

#44: Interstellar

Gross: $672,720,017

Rank on all-time list: #79

Rotten Tomatoes score: 72%

Rates: 8.5, 10, 5, 8, 7, 7 = 45.5

People who rated it: 6

Final score: 45.5/6*10 = 75.83

The first of four Christopher Nolan films in this countdown, Interstellar is a fantastic film, like most of Nolan's catalogue.

#43: Maleficent

Gross: $758,410,378

Rank on all-time list: #56

Rotten Tomatoes score: 49%

Rates: 8, 10, 6, 7, 7, = 38

People who rated it: 5

Final score: 38/5*10 = 76

A retelling of Sleeping Beauty, where the villainous sorceress Maleficent is a protagonist, Maleficent didn't impress critics, but was a resounding success, doing much better than Oz The Great and Powerful the year before.

#42: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Gross: $878,979,634

Rank on all-time list: #37

Rotten Tomatoes score: 82%

Rates: 8, 6, 9, 8, 5, 9, 6, 9, 9, 7 = 76

People who rated it: 10

Final score: 76/10*10 = 76

Another Harry Potter in this section, Chamber of Secrets finishes ahead of Maleficent by virtue of a higher gross. It also received more rates, and has a better critical reception. And the fact I can't be bothered to break the tie properly.

#41: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Gross: $654,264,015

Rank on all-time list: #83

Rotten Tomatoes score: 79%

Rates: 6.5, 8, 9, 7, 9, 7, 9, 8, 7, 6 = 76.5

People who rated it: 10

Final score: 76.5/10*10 = 76.5

Sorry Pirates fans, but The Curse of the Black Pearl hasn't quite made the top 40, missing out by just $138,646,539.

#40: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Gross: $792,910,554

Rank on all-time list: #49

Rotten Tomatoes score: 98%

Rates: 8.5, 9, 7, 8, 7, 7, 8, 10, 7, 5 = 76.5

People who rated it: 10

Final score: 76.5/10*10 = 76.5

At #40 we have a Steven Spielberg classic, E.T. It was the highest-grossing film of all-time until it was surpassed by Jurassic Park, another Spielberg classic which is still to come.

#39: Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Gross: $714,766,572

Rank on all-time list: #68

Rotten Tomatoes score: 89%

Rates: 10, 9, 8, 6, 6, 7 = 46

People who rated it: 6

Final score: 46/6*10 = 76.66

The very good Captain America sequel is at #39. Surprisingly, despite coming third in the Marvel Cinematic Universe poll, it comes only fifth out of the six Marvel films in this one, and ends behind Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World.

#38: The Incredibles

Gross: $631,442,092

Rank on all-time list: #88

Rotten Tomatoes score: 97%

Rates: 8, 9, 8, 6, 7, 6, 8, 9, 8, 8 = 77

People who rated it: 10

Final score: 77/10*10 = 77

The first of two Pixar films in this section, The Incredibles is a very good film, though it isn't one of my favourite Pixar films.

#37: Spider-Man

Gross: $821,708,551

Rank on all-time list: #45

Rotten Tomatoes score: 89%

Rates: 7.5, 7, 7, 9, 6, 8, 9, 10, 7, 7 = 77.5

People who rated it: 10

Final score: 77.5/10*10 = 77.5

Another superhero film. Spider-Man is the only film of its series to finish in the upper half of this countdown, and utterly trumps its sequel Spider-Man 3.

#36: Up

Gross: $731,342,744

Rank on all-time list: #66

Rotten Tomatoes score: 98%

Rates: 10, 10, 15, 9, 6, -5, 8, 7, 10 = 70

People who rated it: 9

Final score: 70/9*10= 77.77

And finishing off this section of great films is my favourite of the lot. Up is one of my top 3 Pixar films, along with Toy Story 2 and Monsters Inc. Such a great film.

Someone gave Up a -5?? This is unacceptable.

That person used their four other -5s much better, giving them to all four Transformers films.

#35: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Gross: $1,017,003,568

Rank on all-time list: #20

Rotten Tomatoes score: 64%

Rates: 8, 8, 6, 6, 8, 8, 10, 8, 8 = 70

People who rated it: 9

Final score: 70/9*10 = 77.77

The first of the three Hobbit films, An Unexpected Journey grossed over a billion dollars, the only film in this section to do so.

#34: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe

Gross: $745,013,115

Rank on all-time list: #63

Rotten Tomatoes score: 76%

Rates: 5, 15, 7, 5, 6, 10, 6, 8, 6, 6 = 78

People who rated it: 10

Final score: 78/10*10 = 78

Another adaptation of a book is at #34, The Chronicles of Narnia. It is the lowest-grossing film in this section, though not by far.

#33: Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted

Gross: $746,921,274

Rank on all-time list: #62

Rotten Tomatoes score: 79%

Rates: 15, 10, 5, 6, 3 = 39

People who rated it: 5

Final score: 39/5*10 = 78

The only film in this section not to be based on a book, Madagascar 3 is also my personal favourite out of these five.

#32: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

Gross: $955,118,788

Rank on all-time list: #28

Rotten Tomatoes score: 61%

Rates: 9.5, 8, 8, 3, 7, 9, 8, 10 = 62.5

People who rated it: 8

Final score: 62.5/8*10 = 78.12

The final film in the Hobbit series, The Battle of the Five Armies grossed slightly less than The Demolation of Smaug. It is also the final film for one of the greatest British actors ever.

#31: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Gross: $934,416,487

Rank on all-time list: #31

Rotten Tomatoes score: 84%

Rates: 7.5, 8, 7, 7, 8, 7, 9, 9, 8 = 70.5

People who rated it: 9

Final score: 70.5/9*10 = 78.33

Ending just outside the top 30, The Half-Blood Prince places third out of the eight Harry Potter films in this poll.

  • 2 weeks later...

Love up and especially Narnia, both amazing and both classics  Especially the latter which is one of my favourite ever movies

Also shocked and so happy how well Madagascar 3 did, always makes me laugh and smile and is so entertaining

Rank on all-time list: #30

Rotten Tomatoes score: 79%

Rates: 5.5, 9, 6, 6, 15, 6, 6, 8, 9 = 70.5

People who rated it: 9

Final score: 70.5/9*10 = 78.33

The Order of the Phoenix finishes second out of the eight Harry Potter films, behind only the final film, The Deathly Hallows Part 2.

#29: Iron Man 3

Gross: $1,215,439,994

Rank on all-time list: #8

Rotten Tomatoes score: 77%

Rates: 10, 9, 6, 9, 7, 6 = 47

People who rated it: 6

Final score: 78.33

The first film in Phase 2 of the Marvel films, which finishes next month with Ant-Man, Iron Man 3 benefitted from the goodwill from The Avengers, and grossed more than its two predecessors combined.

#28: Thor: The Dark World

Gross: $644,783,140

Rank on all-time list: #87

Rotten Tomatoes score: 66%

Rates: 7.5, 7, 8, 9, 8, 8 = 47.5

People who rated it: 6

Final score: 79.16

Surprisingly, Thor: The Dark World beats the usually much more popular Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Iron Man 3, to come third out of the six Marvel films in this countdown. It's now a tussle between Guardians Of The Galaxy and The Avengers for the highest placing in this poll for a MCU movie.

#27: War of the Worlds

Gross: $591,745,540

Rank on all-time list: #103

Rotten Tomatoes score: 74%

Rates: 7, 8, 7, 9, 10, 9, 6 = 56

People who rated it: 7

Final score: 56/7*10 = 80

The lowest-grossing film in this series, with Fast & Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Jurassic World all becoming billion dollar grossers War Of The Worlds is no longer in the top 100 highest-grossing films.

#26: Gravity

Gross: $716,392,705

Rank on all-time list: #68

Rotten Tomatoes score: 97%

Rates: 10, 10, 9, 8, 9, 6, 5, 7 = 64

People who rated it: 8

Final score: 64/8*10 = 80

The movie which rescued 3D from a painful and untimely demise, Gravity won 7 Oscars and received universal critical acclaim. All of which is deserved, as it is a great film.

Completely forgot to vote in this, but 'Prisoner Of Azkaban' is SO LOW and shouldn't be below all those films in the franchise. It's the best of them! :(

'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' shouldn't be behind 'Thor 2' and 'Iron Man 3' either.

'Up' should be higher too!

DISASTER. :( #ShouldaVoted

#25: The Dark Knight

Gross: $1,004,558,444

Rank on all-time list: #22

Rotten Tomatoes score: 94%

Rates: 8.5, 9, 15, -5, 15, 6, 10, 7, 7, 8 = 80.5

People who rated it: 10

Final score: 80.5/10*10 = 80.5

The second film in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, The Dark Knight grossed over $1 million, an extremely rare feat at the time.

#24: Star Wars

Gross: $775,398,007

Rank on all-time list: #54

Rotten Tomatoes score: 93%

Rates: 10, 15, 7, 9, 7, 7, 10, 8, 0 = 73

People who rated it: 9

Final score: 73/9*10 = 81.11

The film that kickstarted one of the most lucrative franchises of all-time, Star Wars paved the way for two sequels, one prequel series, and a sequel due to be released later this year.

#23: Inception

Gross: $825,532,764

Rank on all-time list: #45

Rotten Tomatoes score: 86%

Rates: 8, 6, 10, 7, 9, 7, 10 = 57

People who rated it: 7

Final score: 57/7*10 = 81.42

A gripping science-fiction heist thriller, Inception became a massive box office hit and today is the sixth highest-grossing film to not be a sequel or based on already-existing material.

#22: The Lion King

Gross: $987,483,777

Rank on all-time list: #23

Rotten Tomatoes score: 90%

Rates: 9.5, 10, 15, 9, 9, 10, -5, 7, 9 = 73.5

People who rated it: 9

Final score: 73.5/9*10 = 81.66

And just missing out on a place in the second round is Disney's 1994 classic The Lion King. The film closest to the $1 million mark without having actually crossing it, until three months ago this was one of the 20 highest-grossing films ever, but was recently surpassed by Fast & Furious 7, Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Jurassic World.

The 21 films having gotten to round 2 will be revealed shortly. Round 2 will function as a Least Favourite Movie round. The first round will be a double elimination.
