April 18, 201510 yr I genuinely have no idea how I feel about 'American Oxygen'! I think I like it, but it feels pretty lackluster at the same time. Like the chorus should be much bigger than what it is! I do think this will be one of those songs which tends to lend itself better in remix form, so we'll wait and see! The production is interesting, but bizarre.
April 18, 201510 yr The main problem I have with it is that it is a bit long and it feels like it should be over way before it is. I'm not used to pop songs being so long.
April 19, 201510 yr Just got around to watching that performance for March Madness  Â How is she so awful? This song is so incredibly EASY to sing and she still messes it up.
April 20, 201510 yr US radio is very odd in how the pick up some urban songs but completely snub others. They completely hammered "Truffle Butter" but won't touch BBHMM and didn't touch "7/11". The way Rihanna's single campaigns seem to go at hyperspeed though, "BBHMM" just wouldn't have made it as "FourFiveSeconds" is still in rotation, and stations aren't prepared to drop a proven hit for a song that is clearly more urban-oriented. I'm surprised it was even pushed at pop tbh.

April 29, 201510 yr American Oxygen really is flopping like no other Rihanna single, I think it's her first pre-album single to miss the UK top 40 anyway :( mess. do people not care anymore? is she really at the stage of her career where she can only get 1 big hit per album? :drama:
April 29, 201510 yr The AO release was a mess, news spreads about a hyped new Rihanna song so naturally she puts it out exclusively on a streaming site about four people can afford monthly for not many new features, then after a week when everyone has illegally downloaded etc. and already realised it's shit anyway, she releases it onto iTunes, but no radios are playing it, so where else is it gonna go but down. Now just wasn't the time to release her worst single in five years or so. :( Also the video is very boring, it's the same shots of Rihanna every 15 seconds with American flags and other American things nbetween so naturally nobody from any other country cares, who thought of that? As much as I am enjoying this era and I do like AO a lot, it's weak by her standards and is just SO long and with no radio support, what does she expect. I'm enjoying more experimental Rihanna but I do hope she unleashes a big pop smash soon because the public evidently still like those (Shake It Off etc.) Edited April 29, 201510 yr by Josh.
April 29, 201510 yr I'm not sure if a pop-dance banger is really needed at this point. 'FourFiveSeconds' was a big hit for her and that was still only 2 months ago really and that's quite experimental for a Rihanna single. I just think better release/promo strategies are needed. We've had 3 singles in 3 months with no sign of the album coming anytime soon. And the quicker Tidal goes down the pan the better for all concerned I think.
April 29, 201510 yr Author the TIDAL thing really messed up American oxygens chances. Â it is currently coming for top 40 on pop radio in the US, but iTunes refuses to promote AO due to the TIDAL-exclusive, which is totally understandable.
April 29, 201510 yr If you asked the general public what rihannas most recent single is, I would imagine FFS would be the resounding answer. This is why this has flopped. Oh and the fact it's a steaming pile of sh!te. Sort it out Rihanna -_-
April 29, 201510 yr do people not care anymore? is she really at the stage of her career where she can only get 1 big hit per album? :drama: Her last album had 2 big hits and TTT too, sort of. I think her popularity is still huge and enough for her to have multiple big hit singles from an album but the material needs to be there... her last albums had a lot of filler-y tracks that were obviously never going to be hits (even though I still prefer both TTT and U to 'Loud' and GGGB and I'm not sorry :P) I don't know who in charge was thinking that BBHMM or AO would be big sellers. Although tbf 45S must've been a gamble as well and that paid off. But for second/third single something more save would've been a better choice. Anyway I'm still quite confident we're getting a new huge single to launch the album off on.
May 1, 201510 yr The release strategy is a mess. The surprise release element only really works for the lead single anyway, and tbh 45S was lucky to recieve the success it did. Although it's a good song, with streaming, sales, youtube, radio, to release on a THURSDAY is just stupid lmao. I don't see why they repeated again for BBHMM then again for AO. If they followed the format that Brit/Iggy have upcoming for PG (May 4th Release on iTunes/Spotify - May 11 Music Video - May 17 BBMA performance) she could have seen AO really smash. That being said, AO lacks something for me <_< it just doesn't seem to go anywhere
May 1, 201510 yr Author Hi Joe, welcome to the forum :DÂ I agree with your points in the first paragraph. Rih's release strategies this era are so so weird. The unannounced release worked for FourFiveSeconds due to it being the first single, but it backfired on both Bitch and Oxygen imo. The Thursday releases have boggled my mind as well. I just cannot get my head around as to WHY?

May 10, 201510 yr This is the worst comeback I have seen from a major popstar in a long time. The material is so lacklustre and I am a huge Rihanna fan, she is going to need something HUGE to turn this around for her.
May 10, 201510 yr Yup! It's like Britney coming back post-breakdown: lackluster and with a can't-be-arsed vibe.
