I think this and Scooter's The Logical Song - and XTM's Fly On The Wings Of Love - were the hits they were because of the music channels. Alizee had been a French hit way back in 2000 and seemed unlikely to chart here (particularly given it's not in English) but huge airplay thanks to The Box probably got it that surprise top 10 hit.

Similarly, the long chart runs of Scooter and XTM are supported by major airplay on the same channels. I think the same might be the case for O-Zone and Dana Rayne, both of which we'll see in the 2004-2005 thread.

Voting has now closed, so let's take a look at which 10 songs have made it through to the final 75. We'll start with 2002:

In fifth place we have a Madonna tribute, but sadly 'The Wheels On The Bus' could only get as high as 12th  It's a cover of her #1 hit 'Like A Prayer' which reached #3. As their name suggests it's a house version.

In fourth it's one of the unluckiest #2 hits of all time. Losing out by a small margin that it could have made up had it not leaked the Saturday beforehand, as well as being in competition with Aaliyah's first posthumous release, it's the banging Puretone 'Addicted To Bass'.

Beating Puretone into the top 3 by one point it's one of the biggest novelty songs released in my lifetime, 'The Ketchup Song' by appropriately named Las Ketchup, who later represented Eurovision but by that time no-one cared so this was their only hit single.

Vanessa Carlton.

And beating that really overrated song is 'Heaven' by DJ Sammy, who actually had other hits, but this was the only hit single for Yanou who shares the lead credit. It easily makes #1 here, with over 100 points.

Here is the full recap of 2002, including the songs that didn't qualify for the final:

Now we go to 2003 and see which 5 songs qualified:

Just making it in is the 2003 Christmas #1 and haunting ballad version of 'Mad World' by Michael Andrews feat. Gary Jules, neither of them had further hits. It beats the #6 song by one point (I'll keep you waiting to see which song that was).

At #4 is an urban song with no female vocals :o It does sound surprising considering this is Buzzjack, but not really because 'Turn Me On' is a proper classic and has very wide appeal. I'm glad it made it in anyway as it's very good for its genre.

More urban in third and this time it's from Lumidee with her catchy but generally forgotten tune 'Never Leave You' (I hadn't heard it for ages before the Radio 1 OHW show)

Unlike 2002, 2 songs pass the 100 point mark this year. The first of those is #1 hit and the only top 40 hit for Tomcraft with classic trance jam 'Loneliness'

And to complete a dance top 2 it's 'Fly On The Wings Of Love', a song I did not realise was a Eurovision cover until recently, but this is 100x better than that version anyway and deservingly smashes its way to #1 in this countdown.

Here is the full recap of 2003, including the songs that didn't qualify for the final:

Lumidee was the only one of 2003 I really really wanted through, so yay for that making it :D

Your review of Turn Me On is spot on, an absolute classic

Never Leave You is great too, was a complete cash in on the Divali riddim that dominated the summer of 2003. I hear it on radio's old-skool hours often enough but it is quite generally forgotten :(

DJ Sammy and XTM are perfect victors <3 Glad both have gone down as rightful classics!
