In a year when she went from a member of Girls Aloud to press obsession Cole scored her second No 1 single and album with “Messy Little Raindrops”. The headlines were also generated thanks to her brush with Malaria and her divorce from Ashley Cole and countless rumours of who her new “man” might be, add to that her support of the Black Eyed Peas on tour and another stint on X Factor meant that all in all she was probably the most written about woman in the UK that year.

The move from rap to soul proved a lucrative one for Ben Drew who split his time between an actor and a popstar with success in both. Much like “American Idiot”, “The Defamation Of Strickland Banks” was a concept album which marked his entry into major commercial success following the tale of the eponymous hero. The album generated five hits in 2010, chart form he has struggled to recreate.

From Runners up on “X Factor” they went on to outsell winner Alexandra Burke and score six Number one singles, two of them in 2010 when they got the Children In Need gig. They sold just over a million singles during those 12 months scoring a second No 1 album into the bargain making them undoubtedly the biggest boyband in the land at the end of that year, however that fall from grace was just around the corner.

Becoming the only act on our survey to be virtual, Gorillaz are of course a collaboration between Blur’s Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett who conceived the idea of the group back in 1998 after they had been sharing a flat together. The success of the project’s first album “Gorillaz” in 2001 enabled a much anticipated sophomore set which featured collaborations with De La Soul and more famously Sean Ryder on the fantastic “DARE” which became their only No 1.

Before 2004 Anastacia had only had one top 10 hit to her name yet that belied a fairly consistent hit maker with a further 7 top 40 hits in a two year time frame. News that the singer had breast cancer generated a lot of understandable good will and her next release “Anastacia” proved her most successful period, lead single “Left Outside Alone” spent 11 weeks in the top 10 which in 2004 was something of note!

Yes 2014 is really the year that Paloma Faith arrived in the big seller’s league. Whilst the album “A Perfect Contradiction” narrowly failed to give her her first chart topping album, she did make the top of the singles chart even if it took a collaboration with Sigma to do so. However she did score her biggest solo single as well with “Only Love Can Hurt Like This” and must be fancied to improve on this tally in the near future.

Flo Rida has featured on 5 UK No 1 singles so far, but only on one is he credited as a solo artist and that was in 2012 when “Good Feeling” hit the top thanks in part to the “gift card” effect. It marked the beginning of his most successful year where, though he only sold under 70,000 albums he shifted almost 2.5 million singles with hits like “Whistle” and “Wild Ones” as well as a guest spot on Olly Murs’ “Troublemaker”.

Here’s the biggest girl group in the land come the end of 2001! They had been increasing in popularity since their first hit “No No No” in early 98 and finally completed the transformation into a chart topping act in late 2000 after “Independent Women Part One” went all the way thanks to being used as the theme in the “Charlie’s Angel” soundtrack. Their third album “Survivor” was released in 2001 along with the title track which also topped the charts, they rounded off the year with a cover of the Bee Gees penned “Emotions” in time for Christmas.

149 (194) ERASURE (1,533,000) 1989 1.5006

http://wikiimages.qwika.com/images/fr/1/1e/Photo_ERASURE_1989_(Promo_Star_Trek).jpg

Though he was of course a member of both Yazoo and Depeche Mode neither of those acts ever sold enough in a calendar year to make this list, so it’s left to his biggest selling group and fine purveyors of 80s pop Erasure. By 1989 the band had built up a run of 10 straight top 20 hits and 1989 added a further two but they had two massive albums in “The Innocents” and “Wild!” both of which were chart toppers.

Love Anastacia and her 3rd self titled album was just brilliant with "Left Outside Alone". "Sick And Tired", "Welcome To My Truth", "Heavy On My Heart" is just a fantastic run of singles and the album tracks "I Do", "Seasons Change" where just fantastic. I really enjoyed a lot of her other singles such as "I'm Outta Love" and "One Day In Your Life" just classics, such a shame she fell out of public favour with "Heavy Rotation", but she will always be a great artist.
Aaah, JLS. I know they were the bain of certain chart nerds' lives on here (silly boyband with frontloaded sales, not as good as saviours of everything 1D or whatever random Katy Perry record they beat to the top that week, yadda yadda yadda) but I've always had time for them. Nice lads, great singles, always an absolute HOOT to go see live. I miss them

Cheryl Cole = I remember buying her first 2 albums and were both rubbish, especially the 2nd one, only the singles were decent. But as for her I do like several of her songs such as "Fight For This Love", "Parachute", "Call My Name", "Crazy Stupid Love" and "I Don't Care". Can't stand "3 Words" and "The Flood" which are both dire.

Plan B = Yeah do like a couple of their songs "She Said" was totally my tune of 2010, also "Prayin" and "Ill Manors" are decent enough also. Also Ben Drew is a great actor and saw him in "The Sweeny" remake with Ray Winston, just brilliant and a decent gritty film as well.

JLS = Only liked a couple of their singles = "Beat Again", "Everybody In Love" and "Eyes Wide Shut", but they became quickly dire with shit such as "The Club Is Alive", "Proud", "Hottest Girl In The World". Just pointless, they had so much potential and I hoped that they would have been a British "Boyz II Men" type group, but no they just became a generic kiddie bop group with forgettable crap.

Flo Rida = No Comment :nono:

After 16 years of trying (!) Pulp finally achieved commercial success with 1994’s “Do You Remember The First Time” and were quickly lumped into the “Britpop” movement which arrived pretty much simultaneously. Cocker’s quirky appearance and charm soon made him a tabloid favourite and “Common People” and “Disco 2000” became some of THE sounds of 1995 whilst they proved they could also shift albums when “A Different Class” debuted at No 1.

147 (62) NICKI MINAJ (2,426,000) 2012 1.5308

http://www.bestfan.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/nicki-minaj-2012-bestfan-e1333143136876.jpg

Emerging from New York in 2010 Minaj was well on her way to international popstar before 2012 thanks to the massive hit “Superbass” in 2011 even earning the attention of Madonna who in 2012 featured Minaj on her hit “Give Me All Your Luvin”. Perhaps she wouldn’t have been so happy to have Minaj on her track had she known that her album “MDNA” would be deposed from the top spot by Minaj’s second album “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded”. Minaj went on to have three top 10 hits including her best seller “Starships” though she’d have to wait until 2014 for that No 1 single.

Another BBC Sound Of winner Goulding was an instant success with debut set “Lights” which zoomed straight to the top in 2010 but follow up “Halcyon” could only make No 2, and spent the whole of 2013 racking up the sales helped by a deluxe re-issue “Halcyon Days” and Goulding’s first chart topper “Burn”. The album eventually made No 1 in the first week of 2014 too late to contribute to her listing here.
