Wouldn't know how to check how its going, but there is literally a Spotify playlist being posted around which has No Control on it 4000 times, with fans being asked to keep it going day and night. I really wouldn't underestimate them haha

lol, someone should tell them only 10 plays of those count per day.

What they should do is not bother with this campaign play it 10 times on spotify, 10 times on pandora and any other streaming site you can think of that's free, per day. And actually buy it from multiple download sites too (iTunes won't let you download it more than once, but there are 2 versions of the song)

To be fair, the whole No Control campaign was less about chart positions and more about bringing attention to both the song and the album it comes from. The fact its been played on major radio stations around the world (including Radio 1) because of the project was pretty much the "win" for the fans - especially as the band have acknowledged their efforts too.

The general consensus in the 1D fandom since November last year seems to have been that Steal My Girl was one of the worst songs on the album, or at least should never have been chosen as a single over at least 4 or 5 other tracks. The only real reason "No Control" is getting a major push in particular is because its been a fan favourite from the start (I remember fan polls going around at the time of the album release, where thousands of fans were asked to rank the tracks from 1 to 12 with 1 being the favourite, and No Control came first and Steal My Girl came last).

On top of that, despite its major popularity and the boys being aware of this, the song has so far NOT been performed on their worldwide stadium tour. The fans were getting pretty annoyed (and I think its well established by now that the vocal fans hate their management/ label and the way they are promoted) so decided to take things into their own hands and joined together for this project. Given that Louis Tomlinson is getting a lot of press at the moment too, the timing was pretty good as he carries the whole song (which is rare for the band) and the Zayn part is pretty limited as well. (Naughty Boy's twitter war with Louis also contributed to this song being chosen too, I guess, with NB tweeting Louis to say he couldn't sing).

Pretty cool to see the track in the top 200 across the world though, with reports of it being play-listed on radio stations in countries such as Russia and India even. I just think that if they add the track to their new set-list, starting with the shows in Cardiff Millennium Stadium next month, the fans will be pleased enough.

That's the power of the internet for you.

I disagree - MNEK is clearly a very talented producer and writer, and his best songs seem to be the ones that don't have him as the lead artist (Ready For Your Love, Close [sub Focus], Spoons [Rudimental]) but he doesn't seem to keep any good songs for himself. And his voice is really grating in my opinion, sounds very amateurish at times.

I think you could level the same criticism at Ella Eyre though. I personally think her strongest songs are her collobarations with Rudimental, DJ Fresh and Naughty Boy. I think if Together was labelled as a Sigma or DJ Fresh song it would have no problem getting into the top 10.

MNEK's career is interesting. I think his three solo singles have been great but unconventional, which I doubt helps him commercially.

1D's last campaign was handled pretty terribly, although I absolutely wouldn't say Steal My Girl was a bad single choice! I think it's their third biggest seller now, behind What Makes You Beautiful and Story of My Life. I just think that the campaign for it was VERY messy - no video until 2 weeks after the release, no promo until several weeks later. Night Changes had some good promo and then it came to their 2nd X Factor performance last year, where they didn't do Night Changes despite its impact date being that very day :drama: And now no third single (for Zayn related reasons I'd imagine). It's just so lazy for what is, in my opinion, their second best album (Take Me Home is my fave...just about).
It's been that way for a while imo. It makes sense though as i'd assume pre-orders usually just make up a minor fraction of a song's 'first week' sales. It seems to me like most releases that out-do their pre-order performance are either very accessible tracks that have had heavy radio support beforehand (like 'Stronger', 'Maps', 'Heartbeat Song') or from artists that have a sizeable fanbase/following (then there's the likes of 'Treasured Soul' that defy most logical reasoning)

Does anyone else not think the whole pre order system is massively out of date nowadays?

I don't think pre-orders are out of date at all lol, I think they're actually necessary for some artists, especially with streaming hindering OA/OS releases. I just wish the gap to wait wasn't so long - should be a month max I think, and the song should be on Spotify instantly.

I agree, I'm most annoyed by long hold backs for songs like 'Sing', 'Bang Bang' and 'Want To Want Me' that won't have any trouble getting airplay; it feels like they premiere then sit around doing nothing for 6 weeks until Radio 1 playlists them.

I would fully support all OA/OS though given the charts have become so slow it can't become worse  Australia's turnover is (or at least feels) much better lately.

In terms of their 3rd album as well - Midnight Memories and You & I were terrible choices. They performed Through the Dark on SNL in the US - that would have been a brilliant single. Luckily Best Song Ever and Story Of My Life were really strong tracks, but Through the Dark could have been very popular (given its similar style to Story of My Life).

For this album, I'm really surprised Ready to Run wasn't chosen either. Although them not performing Night Changes on the X Factor was odd, I wish they released Where Do Broken Hearts Go anyway - that was a fabulous performance so I can't knock it. Night Changes was an OK choice though, and they did perform it a lot anyway. But yeah, there is a lot of goodness on Four that remains undiscovered for a lot of people outside of their fanbase. Tracks like the Ed Sheeran-penned "18" and the brilliant "Stockholm Syndrome" that really show a different side to them. They could appeal to a much wider fanbase than they currently do if their official campaign had a better focus, although they're not doing too shabby as it is of course. I do wonder if Zayn leaving is the best thing that could have happened to them though, given its meant that a lot of the kiddie merch has been thrown out of the window.

Got to say their promo as a whole is pretty terrible though. Will never forget the beginning of last year when they weren't interviewed for months despite being on tour (their team was refusing them with local radio stations and all) until finally they had one single day of promo - for their new perfume. Those lads sat there shading the whole thing. So, so disinterested in the product they were selling that it was actually quite hilarious. At one point I think Harry said he didn't have a sense of smell, then followed it up by turning to one of the others and saying "what? It gets rid of the questions." Compare that to their interview on James Corden's show this week - where it was pushed how grown up and different they are now as well. Much better. If they stuck to the old ways for much longer, they wouldn't last much longer I don't think.

I mean tbf I never paid much attention to them until Midnight Memories. I'm a similar age to them (almost 23) but always presumed they were a lot younger and childish because of the way they are/ were marketed.

Exactly. It's especially important for new artists to get their breakthrough.

It's from the new Pitch Perfect film

So it looks like Omi's Cheerleader will be the most commonly purchased song of the week.

I think it will top the sales chart personally meaning streams made its downfall.
