May 29, 201510 yr isn't it a GOOD thing that the charts reflect listening habits rather than just what people are buying though? It makes it more representative of what is actually popular, especially in 2015 when over half of chart sales are made up of streaming. I'd also suggest adding YouTube views* to the chart but on a 1:200 ratio (as I think the YT payout is less than that of major streaming sites). Although this would probably make the chart even slower. (*only ones of the actual song, I don't want the UK chart to re-create a US Chart Harlem Shake / that song no one actually cared about that went top 10 from being used in a viral vid situation)
May 29, 201510 yr Youtube streams being added would be something I wouldn't be able to get behind, a lot of people watch songs on Youtube, it doesn't cost the viewer anything and it's a way to check out a song, doesn't mean that everyone that watches it likes it. Really hope that we don't resort to that, Plus, we don't really need to make it even harder for essentially anything fresh/up and coming artists to make the charts.
May 30, 201510 yr Including Youtube views is essential for a hit chart as is airplay, I don't think a proper singles chart should add those views unless they are the only way of consuming music. These days they just implement other formats. If they were added, then streaming radios should be added too because lots of people choose songs they are watching on Youtube based on what Youtube suggests. It's funny that people think that charts are some sort of entertainment. They're not. They are supposed to be as accurate as possible and with physical sales, downloads and streaming added they actually are as accurate as can be. They MUST keep up with the formats. Nobody would like the official charts to be cd sales only in 2015. Charts should NOT entertain US, they should represent what people are listening, buying and consuming. May 30, 201510 yr Streams aren't counted in the million sellers list. Yes they are , check out the thread on this site .
May 30, 201510 yr Tbh I do feel annoyed that anything I listen to on my ipod doesn't count towards the chart.
May 30, 201510 yr Tbh I do feel annoyed that anything I listen to on my ipod doesn't count towards the chart. To be fair, if you bought them, it's the equivalent of 100 plays, and I imagine most people would not play most songs that much to match that in streams (though there are exceptions I know :D)
May 30, 201510 yr Yes they are , check out the thread on this site . That's our own work, not the OCC's.
May 30, 201510 yr I'm more worried that the charts are killing the music industry. Because it has become more difficult to get a chart hit, labels are signing fewer acts and releasing fewer singles and albums.

(*only ones of the actual song, I don't want the UK chart to re-create a US Chart Harlem Shake / that song no one actually cared about that went top 10 from being used in a viral vid situation) If they're ever going to include Youtube they should include all of it (it's unfair for them not to include stuff like unofficial lyric videos or the dance music channels when people clearly are listening to those for the song). If anything it's the official music videos which should not be included since you could argue people are watching those for the visuals and don't care about the music (but I'm sure in 90%+ of cases people are listening for the music). The unofficial user-uploaded videos are usually just an image in the background or lyrics along with the audio, those should definitely be counted. Who cares if a random song goes top 10 because of Youtube once a year (which is pretty much how often it happens in the US)? The UK chart used to be filled with charity singles, 'fake' versions of un-released songs, Glee Cast singles, old songs re-entering from X Factor, Facebook campaigns, promo singles, Global radio artists, old songs re-entering from discounts and someone dying. We've had Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead and Surfin' Bird get near #1 in recent years. We had Precision Tunes go top 10 lol. PJ & Duncan re-entering at #1. Youtube would be a double-edged sword though. Whilst it might liven up the chart with the occasional gimmicky entry (we've had a lot less of these since streaming was added), it would also keep the biggest hits in the top 40 for even longer. So I wouldn't mind that much if it wasn't included.

I wasn't suggesting unofficial lyric/audio videos shouldn't be included, but when the song is only used for 30 seconds (see; Harlem Shake videos) that shouldn't count. Also if the song is only used as background music for something else (see; that video where people clearly weren't watching for the song) I don't mind too much whether YT is going to count or not really, but I imagine it's something that could possibly happen in the future.
