There is also Paraguay by Iggy Pop (on his new album).

& if France wanted to rebrand itself New France by Orbital ft. Zola Jesus. :D

Also can't believe you forgot England by The National. !

"Portugal" Walk The Moon

"Papua New Guinea" Future Sound Of London

by the way, even if Rodriguez screaming around like a Latin American politician doing a speech gets a tad too annoying, Ecuador is still a monster of a tune

Edited by N-S

I actually tried to find a list of songs that were also counties and I came up with

China (Tori Amos)

Australia (Manic Street Preachers)

America (Razorlight)

Ecuador (Sash!)

Madagascar (Art of Trance)

Ireland (Garth Brooks)

Haiti (Arcade Fire)

Argentina (Jeremy Healy & Amos) is another.

Ecuador is such a tune, still.

Also another song with completely Spanish lyrics to chart (like Los Lobos' "La Bamba" & Daddy Yankee's "Gasolina") in the UK. "Lambada" already had complete Portuguese lyrics to chart in '89.

A few more country songs...

Human League's 'The Lebanon'

Kate Bush 'Egypt'

The Fall 'Iceland'

In Sash! related news... Unfortunately Ecuador has aged rather badly, I used to really like it at the time of release.

Gala - Freed From Desire

Date 13th July 1997

6 Weeks (5 consecutive)

Official Chart Run 4-3-4-2-3-5-5-9-13-20-24-32-42-65 (14 weeks)

*Positions in red are the weeks when the track would be number 1 if just dance music was chart eligible.

And on we go with 1997 throwing up another dance classic - it was a vintage year for commercial dance, even if the purists don't agree.

Gala - born Gala Rizzatto - is from Italy. She was a student of arts and photography and studied in several cities around Europe before moving to New York where she joined the Tisch School of Arts exposing her to a wide variety of arts disciplines, including dance and music performance. Spending her time photographing musicians she started thinking more about becoming a singer and when a DJ heard her voice and was impressed with her ability, he agreed to help record a demo for her.

In 1995 she released Everyone Has Inside which was a number 1 in Italy and also a hit in France and Spain. The follow up, Freed from Desire, completely dwarfed her debut single smashing charts all over the continent hitting the Top 20 in over 10 countries.

She ended up being nominated for Best Dance act at the Mobos in 1997 with all the big guns - The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Orbital - won by The Prodigy in the end.

The song itself is one of most fruitful examples of misheard lyrics in modern music. There's two main lyrics that have given rise to hilarious misinterpretations.

The first is the verse has been variously heard as

My Doctor's got no money

his God is Taiwanese

My Lover's Got Pneumonia,

He's got his trumpet leaves

My father's got no money

He's got his trampoline.

My love has got no money

He's got a stronger leash

My love has got no money

He's got his own disease.

My love has got no money

He's got his Stromboli's.

My lover's got my money

It's in his dungarees.

Then the chorus....

Freed from Desire

Minor sex and securified

Freed from desire

Bob Monkhouse is crucified.

Free from desire

light incense and purify

Free from desire

minor senses Uruguay

More from Gala later.

I love it too :D

But what was she singing in reality?

Free from Desire

Mind incest is purely thigh?

The rest is definitely about trampolines though.

Guessing we'll be having a similar debate about the (rubbish) Wamdue Project and their tribute to trestle tables.

8 weeks inside top 10 is really impressive for 1997! I still don't understand its success in UK

Freed From Desire is a total jam but I prefered other Gala tracks like Let A Boy Cry and especially Come Into My Life.

Possibly the most controversial inclusion coming up next. But it's being included purely on the spirit that the song was created and perhaps not on the rest of the artists output - although, much of their out put has been squarely aimed at dance fans.

Hmmm, does the lead singer wear a big hat and have their name start out with "J"? :D

Could be wrong, but would be a good guess.
