June 27, 20169 yr How are you judging that it's a non-hit version on iTunes? By the duration? Some of those will be mixed albums so the duration won't match the hit version but it may still be the hit version that is used? That and listening to the preview samples. Also, on iTunes they tend to provide individual tracks unmixed in their original form and then you get the 'continuous mix' at the end, which is basically as it would appear mixed on the CD equivalent. June 27, 20169 yr Just got to BBE's 'Flash' on Disc 2, and it's a bit of a revelation - I've been listening to a remix all these years instead of the original! The version I thought was the original, turns out, with a bit of searching, to be the 007 Mix: This was used on the compilation 'Now Dance 97' edited down to be the same length as the original radio edit. Not sure which one I prefer, they both have their qualities. Here's the original as heard on disc 2 of the Buzzjack compilation: The 007 Remix Edit was the single version in the UK though. June 27, 20169 yr Nightcrawlers "Push The Feeling On" is always the 1994 version, Ken Doh's I Need A Lover Tonight isn't usually the full vocal version, Snap!'s The Power often isn't the right version. It's all very annoying. I'm always looking for the ultimate 90s tracklist and whenever I think they've cracked it it's got mistakes like this. Best to stick with the original ones released in the 90s! I highly recommend the Dance Zone albums released in 94-97 in particular. Corona's "The Rhythm Of The Night" is a funny one... sometimes the Rapino Bros version does end up on compilations, like it was on MOS Anthems 90s. I suspect it's less to do with cost but ignorance at both ends, and you only get the right mix if you specifically ask for it. There are other tracks where they are the right mix but not the UK edit, like Cappella's "U Got 2 Let The Music" or Haddaway's "What Is Love". And 2 Unlimited's "No Limit" always seems to be the rap version. Another reason this could be is because sometimes (like with 2 Unlimited and Cappella), they have to licence the track directly from the original European record label, as the UK licence to the label that released it in the UK has expired. June 27, 20169 yr Author There were only two further official number 2 hits that got blocked by other bigger dance hits. They were UNAr5tzZxdk Cartoons - Witch Doctor 2-5-6-7-10-12-18-22-30-30-29-42-58 (13 weeks) Kept at number 2 by Mr Oizo. And q8w5brfBqEM Wiseguys - Ooh La La 2-5-9-17-25-40-46-54-56-66 (10 weeks) Kept at number 2 by Shanks and Bigfoot.
July 11, 20168 yr Author So, I kinda think I messed up putting BBE - Flash on the comp. :( Edited July 12, 20168 yr by Colm

That's interesting, I knew about a few of these but I didn't know there were alternate versions of The Power and What Is Love - what's the difference?
July 12, 20168 yr It includes a track that I'd never heard before this thread existed (Black Box's 'Fantasy') which was great to hear! Hugely different from the legendary Ride On Time but has its charm. Really good work, I think I prefer it as it goes on as it feels like disc 3 has more of the more underrated/lesser known hits, while Disc 1 starts off with perhaps the most known tracks. It's reminded me actually how few some of them are played today...The KLF's 'Justified & Ancient' was absolutely massive in 1991/early 92, just that bit before my time but tons of people I know a few years older than me know it virtually by heart. But I've very rarely heard it played in recent yrars, and don't think I'd heard it at all until about a decade ago - indeed virtually any KLF track other than 3am Eternal seems frustratingly absent from recent dance CDs and comps, perhaps due to them deleting their back catalogue?
July 12, 20168 yr I played “Justified And Ancient” at the 1990s night that I DJ'd at in my friends field a few year ago and it got a BIG reaction. I still occasionally hear it on Kiss and a few other stations when they do classics but it is such an odd pop song that I am not surprised it doesn't get much play. That and the fact that they deleted their entire back catalogue and it is not possible to either stream it or buy it means that very few people actually have it to play anyway.
July 12, 20168 yr Justified and Ancient is definitely one of my favourite ever songs, it's so wonderfully bonkers and catchy.
July 13, 20168 yr Author I loved Justified And Ancient at the time and it has aged will but isn't dark and sinister enough for me - unlike Last Train, What Time is Love and in particular It's Grim Up North.
July 13, 20168 yr Exactly - which makes it perfect for parties. At Uni I did manage to get “It’s Grim Up North” played at a end of year ball (I had it on CD Single) and the reaction was total confusion. :D They played the edit and not the 10 minute version that name checks the M62 !
July 13, 20168 yr That's interesting, I knew about a few of these but I didn't know there were alternate versions of The Power and What Is Love - what's the difference? Sometimes The Power don't have the "He's gonna break my heart of hearts" bit and the UK edits of Haddaway's first two hits were just a bit shorter than the European ones.
July 13, 20168 yr Are you doing 'Dance Chart Number Ones 2000-2009'? Some great tracks then - UK Garage through trance, funky house and finally electro house.
July 16, 20168 yr I have already started thinking about a 00s one. Certainly 2000/2001 would be quality stuff. And 2004 to 2006 of course too that disco revival :cheer:
July 18, 20168 yr Just wanted to say - TOP WORK on that compilation Colm, the sequencing is really good. We had it on in the car on the way to Latitude and it got approvals all round! Especially loving the Morales back-to-back on Disc 2, and the intro to Disc 3 which is IMMENSE! Thanks. :D Edited July 18, 20168 yr by Doctor Blind
