It's like ARMED FORCES is wheeled out at every opportunity to wave a nationalistic dog whistle to some of their supporters. In terms of embarrassment the Tories have only to look at their leader with far too many incidents to mention.

I wanna know what receipts they have beyond a Tory says so coz the bbc were hitting it hard and if there’s heehaw more than the word of the Tories then that’s a nice wee slander suit just waiting for Joanna Cherry to seize upon unless it’s only terfs she defends because someone used a factual descriptor for them
Sadly "rough" still leading the opposition in the majority of polls - we can but pray for a change though.
Attempt to change narrative with COP26 press conference tonight, why any statement couldn't wait until parliament is beyond me.
So Boris has now pulled a fast one, rapidly changing his own personal opinion on MPs having 2nd jobs, linked to the hammering in the polls and public opinion, trying to improve the public perception. Niw it appears a lot of the backbencher MPs in particular are not happy about giving up Directorship and Consultancy work as a side hobby. Be interesting to see how the vote goes, you get the feeling this will either blow up internally or Boris will be able to pull public opinion back round..

Laura Kuenssberg is doing her best to help him.

Oh yes, the 'journalist' who said the story of Owen Paterson was an inconsequential 'just a bit of a Westminster village story'/ nothing to see here.

Absolute melt.

Honestly still amazed how the Tory party managed to get their PR chief to infiltrate the BBC and become the head political editor and she’s not been found out/sacked by the bbc for two jobbing

In no suprise whatsoever, the much feted ban on 2nd jobs which was passed tonight don't really affect any Tory MPs at all (apart from maybe the Doctor who is actually doing something useful). The consultants with conflict of interests can still scam away as long as they do less than 10 hours a week on it.

Are we surprised? I saw Andrew Rosindell (fully supportive of removing the Universal Credit £80/month uplift OF COURSE) was urging caution over banning second jobs for MPs because they were needed to 'support their lifestyle' - that lifestyle presumably a code for: weekends doing lines of cocaine and Brazilian rent boys.

An £82k salary (plus expenses) puts them in the Top 5% of earners- I've no problem with them doing a public service role as a second job (like doctor Rosena Allin-Khan) but why anything else is allowed is beyond me frankly.

Not that I was a massive fan of HS2, but the rail links in the North are badly needed to connect the cities better. I'm interested to see what they announce, as yet again it just seems like a massive waste of money to connect the south. It's ridiculous, I can drive to Manchester quicker than it takes me to get the train by a good 20-30 minutes for example!

Agree, do you mean Leeds-> Manchester? I'm not saying the rail network is brilliant in the south, but it's like a 22nd Century Japanese bullet train network in comparison with the flimsy 1970s one carriage joke of an excuse for the service pattern in the north. Not to mention that Beeching basically tore Lincolnshire out of the network entirely.

HS3 should definitely be built before HS2. I mean who in their right mind is wanting to get to Birmingham faster??

That whole Transpennine line is a complete joke, but from Leeds to Manchester is especially bad. Always over-crowded, takes way longer than it should compared to driving even with some traffic on the M62. It is literally encouraging people to drive! The south trains aren't too bad, agree they are not perfect but they are usually well serviced and can always find a seat. Have always thought there is such an easy opportunity to link up that Pennines area so much quicker. Prioritising HS2 was a complete disaster, so will be interesting to see what the Tories propose.

Transpennine services are the biggest joke in the entire country. These are major cities and metropolitan areas and the rail service is a complete joke. Manchester Piccadilly is hideously overcrowded and the through lines that also go through Oxford Road Are so congested there isn’t a day when there isn’t a delay through that part of the network but it’s an essential part of the entire northern rail network!!! As Roo says that the M62 is a faster option, even with the traffic, is laughable. Traffic on that route is dire and yet it’s faster and more comfortable than the train which will be late and you’ll stand the whole way because it’s too short.

They have promised and failed to deliver for years cancelling electrification and improvement plans (like platform 15&16 for Piccadilly) but in the same breath approve X-Rail 2 for London. How anyone served by Northern or TPE can vote Tory and look themselves in the mirror I don’t know.

Im a huge fan of the full route network of HS2 but it’s being built too slowly. It’s badly needed in order to 1) allow for speedy intercity connections that kill off domestic flights (eg on routes like Scotland to London) and 2) to take the fast trains off the WCML to allow for increased capacity for both local services and freight - both of which are needed to take cars and trucks off the road. Any opponent to HS2 I come across can’t address point 2 with their „just fix the WCML“ suggestions. But also HS2 alone won’t fix shit. It needs to run to the border with Scotland via both Carlisle and Newcastle, HS3 needs to connect the northern cities from Liverpool/Chester via Manc, Hudds & Leeds/Bradford to Hull/Newcastle et al with spurs to Sheffield/Doncaster and integration with HS2 (eg on the Leeds to Newcastle leg), HSScot needs to connect to HS2 at the border and then connect the 7 Cities with a high speed line (probably Edi-Gla with a triangle junction at Falkirk HS Station to allow trains north to Stirling-Perth-Dundee-Aberdeen and terminating at Inverness), every mainline needs electrified and and then branch networks should be restored.

As far as I see it, ambitious infrax building has the advantage of driving economic growth that then pays for the infrax build but also it allows us to reach carbon neutrality. Sink the CO2 in now into the major building drive and then plant Forrest along the side of the tracks for natural noise buffering and also to soak up CO2.

Apparently some Tory MPs have started to send letters to the chair of the 1922 (which I think most of them come from) committee to say they've lost confidence in Johnson. With Peppa Pig talk to a business audience during a rambing speech yesterday being a last straw. The Tory papers also seem to be out for him (largely, I don't read that filth) but is that a good or a bad thing? Would we get somebody more competent but worse - anti immigration, anti EU, anti LGBT, authoritarian, privatising the NHS, anti green?
Nah if they get rid which I’d be shocked if they did it’ll be more of a centrist leader in place imo!

Boris is a busted flush, but I can't see them getting rid of him just yet.

PMs always go on longer than you think. Theresa was dead in the water after that election in June 2017 but didn't get toppled until 2 years later. He's still useful to them for now, mainly to deflect all the gallons of shit that our privatised water companies are LITERALLY pumping into our rivers and seas, but his card is marked and I don't think he'll be the one leading the party at the next GE.

The 1922 Committee automatically includes all backbench MPs. 55 MPs would need to write to the chair to trigger a vote of no confidence in him though which seems too many right now. Without an obvious candidate to replace him, he'd probably win the confidence vote
