I've just noticed that 'Photograph' climbing to #12 means that all of Ed's US post-album singles (excluding 'Bloodstream' as it didn't seem to get pushed) have outpeaked the album's lead single, which must be highly unusual! :o

Yeah, though to be fair I think "Sing" was a hit in its own right (12 weeks in the top 20). It's just that sales/streaming/airplay never quite came together to give it a good peak.

Also for anyone who takes interest in it, "Cheerleader" is now essentially locked in as the Song of the Summer. New peak for "The Hills", yay, and "Trap Queen" now 24 weeks in the top 10 :o

Frustrating one place climb for Little Mix there. Yay for Stitches becoming a genuine hit, hope it translates over to the UK.

I'm interested to see where "Wildest Dreams" will debut. The video effect, the release of the radio edit, and Taylor winning just about every award in the VMAs should definitely boost it.

Bieber has a large lead over The Weeknd, and I'm not sure how it's doing in streaming, so the only thing holding it back is overall AirPlay. "Can't Feel My Face" has just exited #1 and Biebs has not entered the top 20 yet.

Chart Highlights

• The Weeknd's "Can't Feel My Face" returns to #1 on the Hot 100, its second week on top. The song tops Radio Songs for a fourth week with 150 million audience impressions, while on Digital Songs, it drops 1-4 with 77,000 downloads sold (see below). It leads both On-Demand Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for a seventh week each, as well as Pop Songs for a fourth. Meanwhile, OMI's "Cheerleader" falls back to #2 after spending six weeks atop the Hot 100. It remains at #2 on Digital Songs after selling 86,000 downloads.

• Silentó's "Watch Me" keeps at its #3 peak, but it earns this week's Streaming Gainer honor. It spends a sixth week at #1 on Streaming Songs with 22.3 million streams; on Digital Songs, it rises 5-3 and overtakes "CFMF" as the top-selling urban song. On Hot Rap Songs, the track spends a sixth week on top. Below "Watch Me", The Weeknd's "The Hills" jumps up 5-4 with the Digital and Airplay Gainer honors. The song climbs 25-15 on Radio Songs with 64 million audience impressions, but its gains in sales aren't reflected on the Digital Songs chart. As Billboard explains, "'Face' and 'Hills' drop on Digital Songs, but their slides are owed to iTunes customers who opted to 'complete' their purchase of The Weeknd's new album, by upgrading their earlier purchases of the songs to a full album. Effectively, consumers who completed the album were returning the songs, thus translating to its sales chart falls. For the purposes of the Hot 100, however, aggregate sales contribute to the songs' overall point total." On the genre charts, "The Hills" remains at #3 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and rises 27-22 on Pop Songs, and it's the top-streamed R&B track for a ninth week. Beneath The Weeknd, R. City earn their first top-10 hit with "Locked Away", which jumps 16-8. The track also gives Adam Levine his second solo top-10 (his first was Gym Class Heroes' "Stereo Hearts", on which he was featured). The track takes over at #1 on Digital Songs with 91,000 downloads sold. On Pop Songs, it surges 12-8.

• Further Down: Shawn Mendes' "Stitches" climbs 32-20, giving the singer his first top-20 hit. The song rises 33-23 on Streaming Songs, 14-10 on Digital Songs, and 24-19 on Pop Songs. Below Shawn, @iHeartMemphis makes his first top-40 appearance with "Hit the Quan", which leaps to #23 after debuting last week at #41. The track rises 47-33 on Digital Songs and 15-8 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.

I think it will be close between Bieber and The Weeknd. Like Cody said, it will come down to airplay. Yeah, Bieber managed 50m+ total views from his lyric and official video combined but how much out of that will contribute to US streaming? I'm not sure if Billboard values both On-Demand (audio) and Video streaming points equally or if audio is valued more.

 

As for Wildest Dreams, I am expecting a Top 15 debut but am secretly hoping for a Top 10.

I would say video views are significant. "Drag Me Down" only managed a #12 debut on overall streaming even though it was #1 on on-demand streaming that same week. The fact that it didn't have a video really hurt it and it could've probably debuted at #1 on the Hot 100 had it had even just a lyric video.

 

As far as airplay, I think Justin is already doing much better than 1D were at this point, and "CFMF" is already on the decline in audience, so the airplay gap will be smaller. And I think the streaming numbers and 300K sales should be enough to overtake that gap.

Selena now has a three-way tie for her highest peaking hit: 'Come & Get It', 'The Heart Wants What It Wants' and 'Good For You' have all reached #6! I hope 'Good For You' doesn't ruin that by climbing any higher.

 

'Do It Again' climbing after losing most of its airplay! It never crossed over to Pop/CHR so Pia's label should really give it more of a push.

1Ds success is very overated. Sure they've had 4 #1 US albums but I think it should be noted how they've never had a US #1 single.

But does that even matter?

I've always seen 1D to be more of an album-seller than a singles-seller.

The singles chart has never been the end-all-be-all of how the public perceives an artist's success. Bruce Springsteen never had a #1 on the Hot 100 but that hasn't stopped anyone from mythologizing his '80s success. To bring the comparison closer to 1D, the Backstreet Boys also never had a #1 single, but you'd be hard-pressed to call their success overrated when, in their heyday, their albums were doing first-week Taylor Swift numbers.

 

A lot of this just has to do with how the Hot 100 happens to be structured at the time, and not to mention so much of it is just luck as well. And realistically, if they'd released a video for "DMD" at the same time as the song and it got to #1, would that really have elevated them to a new degree of success, or would that just have been the icing on the cake at that point? You could ask the same of Justin this week.

I just think their success in terms of sales are very front loaded. They've never had a US #1 and as of their last two albums, a post album hit. I just find it very interesting.

It doesn't matter if people actually buy their albums though, which they shift in pretty hefty numbers over there.

 

Plus there's cultural impact, tour ticket sales etc. too.
