'Hello' is fantastic, as expected a humongous seller and deservedly so <3 (will try my best to avoid the inevitable overplay though!)

It's a bit surprising that this is only Adele's second UK #1, given how huge of a star she is.

Skyfall wold have been number 1 if she didn't release with 2 days left of the tracking week!

I'm still surprised that "Rolling In The Deep" missed out. I know Bruno Mars (who blocked it) was huge at the time, but still.

Great debut for Joanna *.* Adele's 21 re-enters the chart at #11!

I was just aboot to ask if she'd been no.1 before - Rolling in the Deep and Skyfall were robbed tbf - Skyfall particularly, as it was released on a Friday to be an anniversay of some kind, yet all anyone remembers is the chart record - so they should have released it on a Monday!

It was released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Dr. No premiere, and that ended up being a mistake chartwise.

How many!!! :winner: :winner: :deadwithGreekincenseman:

2008 02 Chasing Pavements -1-

2008 19 Hometown Glory -3-

So was Chasing Pavements first or HG? We seemed confused aboot this in the 25 thread.

Surprised Chasing Pavements got to 2, but it was huuge with the indie cool crowd at the time. What blocked it?

Basshunter - Now You're Gone

Damn Adele. Preventing what would have been the best #1 of the year with what is now the worst... <_<

Other way round

Pop trash beaten by musical genius.

The delusion...

333k is astonishing in this current sales climate. Shake to see KDA fall so much :( and yass at Taylor hanging on for another week. #40 peak is not a bad result for a 5th single of 1989 really.

Chasing Pavements was the first official release from the album in Feb 2008 (after the sound of results) with heavy radio support while HG was released as a buzz single in late 2007 and rereleased later in 2008 as a 4th single from her first album and that's when she peaked top 40 with it.

Oh - that doesn't answer our debate at all, just complicates it

Basically, Hometown Glory was given a (limited) release before Adele was given a commercial push. Chasing Pavements was the first proper single and Hometown Glory got a full release after Cold Shoulder!
:arrr: Brb, messaging Michael~

They weren't going to know during its creation whether it'd "work" or not, would they? Hindsight is a wonderful thing. They still got a #1 out of Holler anyway, significantly ahead of the #2, so arguably they did something right. It was produced and written in 1999, when TLC and Destiny's Child were hugely successful with r&b songs. The Spice Girls wanted to "mature" and I guess working with American producers on a "hot" sound seemed logical to them at the time, to develop.

I probably wasn't clear there - I meant "work" as in it didn't sound right rather than didn't become a success. People bought into the Spice Girls music because they released solid, catchy pop music, I don't see why they thought doing something that every other girlband was doing would be a good idea. With songs like 'Viva Forever', they could have had a more mature sound whilst keeping their pop sound which the fans enjoyed. It may have gone #1 but anything to their name probably would have, and its sales were significantly down on their other first week tallies.

I don't say this as a Spice Girls hater, I just think 'Holler' was totally wrong for them!
