November 28, 20159 yr I overlooked that "week end" dates would be used for this. That effectively cuts out the last week of December sales. :( The "Spice Girls - Too Much" sales listed (252k) covers Mon 15th December to Sat 20th December only (in terms of the actual dates those copies were sold on). It seems slightly unfair to me that what it sold from Sun 21st to Sat 27th is essentially disregarded because that is considered to be a w/e of 3rd January '98. 3rd Jan only reflects the final date of the duration of that chart being the latest one published, rather than when those copies were actually sold. (Hope this makes sense). With Too Much, that means its second week figure of 218k, all of which was sold within December, isn't taken into account, and that's quite a significant figure to dismiss. :( I have seen that you wrote a disclaimer in your first post regarding this, but still, only going up to Christmas week negates it being a "December" thread, imo. It's more "last week of November up until Christmas Day" hits. :kink:
November 28, 20159 yr Caught up now, yay. It's great to see the likes of 'Breathe' and 'Reet Petite' in amongst all the balladry! 'Breathe' doesn't have the Christmas no 1 tag so it wouldn't exactly be the first song I'd think of as a winter smash. Excellent song nevertheless, my favourite from The Prodigy. 'Too Much' would rank 2nd in terms of Spice Girls Christmas no.1s (after '2 Become 1'). Fond memories of SpiceWorld the movie! 'Angels' is one of my Robbie favourites for sure. I've never really been able to escape it as it's my dad's favourite song, but it really is beautiful. Always baffling that is was 'only' a no.4 hit despite those colossal sales! I always forget about 'Free As A Bird' in terms of Beatles hits. I guess it doesn't really have that 'classic' status like so much of their discography. Great stuff~

It's more "last week of November up until Christmas Day" hits. :kink: There is further rhyme and reason to this. The BMRB (the chart compilers 1969-1982) didn't record sales in the week after the Christmas chart so to keep it consistent throughout the entire period it had to be the same week hence my methodology here. As often as not it's the publicity of going for the Christmas No 1 that generates sales so the week after isn't always great- hope that helps to explain it :D
November 28, 20159 yr Author I wonder if Janet Jackson's 'Together Again' will make it on here. It sold 800k in the UK but I'm unsure how much it sold in that December month. 77. TOGETHER AGAIN- Janet Jackson (1997) 272,000 http://i64.tinypic.com/24uwzh0.jpg Originally a ballad (check out the “deeper remix” to see how that sounded) Jackson shot two videos for this song, one for the ballad and one for the dance number we all know. It became easily her biggest seller thanks to its Christmas release and its longevity in the top 10 (10 weeks) which was an unusual tally for a non top 3 hit. osAfl4zVUGg
November 28, 20159 yr Author 76. I’M YOUR MAN- Wham! (1985) 272,000 http://i63.tinypic.com/2r5vtbr.jpg The third chart topper for Wham! was also their first release for almost a year during which time they had scored a hat- trick of US No 1 singles and become the first western band to perform in China. It was however a marked come down sales wise from their 1984 work and the duo split the following summer. kAGl8RWTSqc
November 28, 20159 yr Together Again was (and indeed still is) great, so pleased it was such a smash for her
November 28, 20159 yr God seemed like they defined the 80s lol, although George had solo material during his time with wham - careless whisper
November 29, 20159 yr Author Is it? Was it on his solo one too? The first solo album it appeared on was "Ladies and gentlemen" in 1998. Prior to that it was on Wham!s "Make it big" (1984) and "The Final" (1986)
November 29, 20159 yr Author 75. EMBARRASSMENT- Madness (1980) 272,000 http://i65.tinypic.com/x10dig.jpg One of Madness’s more sombre singles, “Embarrassment” was penned after one of the band members sister fell pregnant and as she was part of an interracial couple which even in 1980 was quite a taboo breaker. In real life it ended well when the family’s displeasure melted after the child was born. Ahh KpN_TOP9hg8
November 29, 20159 yr Author 74. HEROES- X Factor Finalists 2010 (2010) 274,000 http://i63.tinypic.com/9k5roh.jpg The once annual appearance of a cover by the 16 finalists seems to have been dropped now after the catastrophic performance of the 2011 track “Wishing On A Star” (1-2-17-48) as the franchise kept returning increasingly poorer returns. Featuring Matt Cardle, One Direction and Rebecca Ferguson this cover of the David Bowie classic was in aid of “Help For Heroes” and duly became a third No 1 for the series. dHsCGoZst-w
November 29, 20159 yr Author 73. WHEN YOU BELIEVE- Leon Jackson (2007) 275,000 http://i66.tinypic.com/2rqogt3.jpg Speaking of X Factor here’s 2007’s victor Leon Jackson who chose a 1998 duet between Whitney and Mariah to kick off his chart career. That it topped the charts was of course a given at the time though its first weeks sales were the lowest since poor forgotten Steve Brookstein. wMO4-HzMqRg
November 29, 20159 yr 'Together Again' is firmly one of my favourite songs of all time. Certainly in my top 10. Stunning
November 29, 20159 yr of course we're gonna get lots of X Factor entries  I have a feeling the #1 won't be XF related though..
