Has the sales climate changed that much since they hit 168k last year though?

aside from adele sales at the top of the album chart look down ~30-40% on last year

whilst christmas will mitigate some of the losses, the law of diminishing returns and the fact it's only 18 months since the last one will compound them~

Looking at the total album sales and without streaming sales decreased year-on-year about 10-15%

Ghost Stories is on ~606,300

First week totals for their previous 6 albums:

2000 Parachutes 70,935

2002 A Rush Of Blood To The Head 273,924

2005 X&Y 464,471

2008 Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends 302,074

2011 Mylo Xyloto 208,343

2014 Ghost Stories 168,048

I expect they will open better than Ghost Stories, but probably not by much.

Why do you and others think they will open with more than Ghost Stories? As you have shown their album sales are down from the previous release for the last 3 albums and the market is continually shrinking.

Yeah it is xmas but Adele and Justin look like the 2 xmas gift cds (Adele to the older generation, Justin to the younger) I'm not sure many people will be wanting Coldplay as an xmas gift this year.

Mainly because it will be one of the biggest sale weeks of the year, but I agree it is not a foregone conclusion.

Because a December release is bound to sell a lot more than a May release, regardless to the market shrinking. And, as I've said before, this era is getting a lot more support than their last. I don't think it'll sell that much more, but I still think it'll sell more.

I disagree that not many people will want Coldplay as a Christmas gift. Their new album is high in the charts on preorders and they have a solid fan base. I expect this album will sell ok but I agree it may not be enough to stop Adele from being no1. I'm going to predict 180k for first week sales.

I think Coldplay will sell well too. I'm predicting 235,000. As many have said, people who are out buying Adele might pick up other albums too.

They also just announced a huge stadium tour, so there's obviously still a lot of interest in Coldplay. I sound like a stan, I'm really not. I think 'Adventure of a Lifetime' is bloody terrible and am finding it difficult with how inescapable it is at the moment.
No way will Coldplay sell that much, I'm going for 130k for them. Adele will easily beat them.

They'll have more. They managed 168k last year in Q2

I don't know why everyone is judging Coldplay's likely first week sales based entirely on their previous first week sales + the market. Surely total album sales get a look in. Ghost Stories sold 168k to follow up an album that sold ~1.4 million, which is less than an eight of of the total sales of their previous album. Considering Ghost Stories only sold ~600k (?), they'd be looking at sales of 70k or so should they mirror that.

Of course that replication won't come anywhere near to happening because of other factors but it seems like a huge stretch to me to expect Coldplay to shift 200k based on past results when we know that their fanbase has shrank significantly in recent years. Can we really expect a third of the people who purchased Ghost Stories to buy their latest release in a single weak?

I expect they'll over-achieve but only in the 120-150k sales range. Anything beyond that would be very impressive/December distortion at its finest.

Ghost Stories is the very very very best Coldplay album....and yet has lowest sales....so my point is...

Who knows how it will do....but I don't think it will topple Adele (maybe if it was all hype but as the album is excellent there's no chance).

However, they will undoubtedly benefit from additional similar market casual sales from people picking up Adele...so that will elevate it higher than it would have been.

Sales info: Adele has already sold 200k+ so far this week, so still averaging above 60k a day: http://www.musicweek.com/news/read/overnig...world-89/063519 - also breaks Oasis' record for fastest to reach a million. 10 days vs. Oasis' 17 days.

It seems OCC/MW are having a hard time reporting correct figures for Oasis. In this week's Music Week Magazine they say the record was 11 days for Oasis, but in the article above they correct themselves and say the record is actually 17 days for Oasis. There's a big difference between 11 days and 17 days.... The same way there is a big difference between 764k and 813k. *rolls eyes*. It could have caused problems had Adele taken 12 days to reach a million, but in this instance it doesn't matter!
