we welcome back Grandbrothers to the contest, having represented us last year with 'What We See' they are now back with 'Yonder', another brilliant piano instrumental.

While composing Yonder, we were busy preparing our first tour since what felt like an eternity, being full of anticipation. Short before that, the future seemed so unclear and full of obstacles - pretty much like a ride into the unknown. When the fog vanished we felt a certain euphoria and this is how ‘Yonder’ began to come to life.

We ended up putting this track together in a live version really quickly and immediately felt that this was the track we needed to end our shows with. A few months fast forward we obviously only have the best memories playing this track looking into the happy faces of our audience giving us enormous energy on stage. Just recently we came back to the track and finished the studio version which will be out on September 13th - Coincidentally just months before we are going on tour again throughout the UK and EU.

Danæviia 138 :: 100th anniversary extravaganza

BJSC 121

Entry: Moko - Your Love

Final: 20th of 37 (164 points)

Semi-Final: 3rd of 26 (81 points)

Genre: Dancepop

Danævii Chart Run: 2-1-1-1-1-1-10-9-5-12-31-37-50-50-x-22-35-x

How does it hold up today?

Well I sent this as it was a fairly old potential and I had nothing new to send that I thought would do well. I was hoping for a little more than 20th with it but I probably left it too late. It’s still a great dance-pop tune and Moko sings the hell out of it.

Even with me being a little salty that Gareth was allowed past the veto after having won with him not too long ago, 18 points was never going anywhere else.

Entry: Ace Marino - Spaces

Final: DNQ

Semi-Final: 24th of 29 (81 points)

Genre: Synthpop

Danævii Chart Run: 27-18-7-15-16-27-42-x

How does it hold up today?

Synthpop was in fashion, or so I thought. I’d stumbled upon a great find by chance but it wasn’t enough to get past the semi-finals. It’s not by any means a highlight of my entries mind so can’t be too salty about it.

How does it hold up today?

A great track here reminiscent of the mid-10s EDM era, I was banking on Buzzjack having a little nostalgia for that sound but it wasn’t really to be. I was on a bit of a dry spell for properly great entries though and this lucked out by being released at the right time as it’d have been left as a potential if it was later on in the year.

Sometimes a basic piano-house bop is all it takes for top points and this one certainly does it well, so much so it eventually became a UK chart hit.

How does it hold up today?

It was a bit disheartening that this bombed so badly as I preferred it to my previous two entries although in hindsight not really surprising that Buzzjack didn’t take to a generic dancepop entry. I also wanted some justice for the previous Vassy song flopping but that wasn’t to be. It’s still a fun song anyhow though not a major fave.

How does it hold up today?

After a disastrous flop I finally took the risk of sending this, which was very much dependent on if it had a good semi-final and thankfully it did. Unsurprisingly it didn’t do too well in the final though. I am glad it had a good few fans though as this was my favourite entry of the year (and my personal chart year-end #1). It is an expertly written and produced track, and I’d heard nothing quite like it before, so I am glad I sent it.

BJSC 150: Grum - Look To The Light

Welcoming back Grum to BJSC we have the penultimate track of his latest album 'Unreality', featuring Grum himself on vocals for the first time. It is a real hands in the air epic anthem, festival progressive house for the modern age. The song has spent 22 weeks so far in the Danævii chart's top 10 so we're excited to finally share this with the rest of Buzzjack for the special occasion of the 150th BJSC. Grum is a Scottish progressive house/trance producer signed to Anjunabeats whose 'Afterglow' we sent in 2020. He is also influenced by 80s synthpop particularly for his other recent release, a rework of Tears for Fears' 'Shout'. Here's hoping it puts us back in the top 30 after last month's underperformance.

Surely this will be more near the top of the scoreboard than the bottom?! A great return to form and a surprise that you've held off on sending for so long!
Is it just me that can hear 'Enola Gay' in the middle of this? I'm really liking the sound of this so hopefully it can see you fare better than your past two entries Dan!

BJSC 151: Nosaj Thing feat. Julianna Barwick - Blue Hour

After we had our 'Golden Hour' in BJSC 136, we now give a 'Blue Hour'. It comes from L.A. based producer Nosaj Thing, or Jason Chung to his family, taken from his fifth album. He has also produced songs for Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper & Kid Cudi. The song also features vocals from Julianna Barwick (who herself is also an electronic producer), and samples the drum track of Massive Attack's trip hop classic 'Teardrop'. We have qualified to the BJSC final so we now ask that you vote Danæviia and let's start the year off with a hit.

Entry: Grum - Afterglow (feat. Natalie Shay)

Final: 20th of 41 (172 points)

Semi-Final: 8th of 30 (75 points)

Danævii Chart Run: 45-x-40-31-31-24-29-40-48-9-4-5-5-7-10-6-2-3-2-1-3-4-5-7-8-11-14-20-23-29-37-26-25-25-33-44-44-x-14-14-19-27-34-34-37-31-39-36-35-35-31-42-36-33-36-x

How does it hold up today?

Another of my absolute faves of the decade so far, taking its sweet time to make #1 in my chart I was worried it would be too much of a slow burner for the contest but it did manage a top 20 placement anyhow. Grum has done quite a few excellent songs particularly last year, one of which I sent and did even better with.

An unexpected 'comeback' for Klangkarussell making a great song in a much darker style than the hit they were best known for, which went on to deservingly win the contest.

How does it hold up today?

This really stood out to me as a trance epic, and is certainly a song that works better in its full length version. I went on to prefer another of BT's tracks from the same album, 'Wildfire', but both songs are rather similar and he's been sent quite a few times. I'd always wanted to send something featuring Emma Hewitt's warm vocal on it too, after I was beaten to 'Colours' back in the day, so was pleased this gave that opportunity.

One of the biggest techno songs in recent years which really stood out, and perhaps could've been a winner in a later contest as this was a bit ahead of the trend.

How does it hold up today?

This is great, even if its reference to Cyberpunk 2077 doesn't really make it look so, although my least favourite of the tracks I sent in the latter half of 2020 it was still a sizeable #1 for me. Electro house these days has to do a lot for me to get into it, which this certainly did - a real headbanger of a tune.

It was a close call between my top three, though I'd probably have gone for Tsha if it was ran a little later when slap house was starting to run its course (although VKTM is still a good example of its genre). Le Youth out-did this entry a few times since this entry too.
