BJSC 129

Entry: Aly & Fila with Plumb - Somebody Loves You

Final: 10th of 42 (240 points)

Semi-Final: 5th of 33 (94 points)

Genre: Uplifting trance

How does it hold up today?

This remains a truly brilliant and emotional trance effort - surpassing their previous entry for me 'Unbreakable' by spending 8 weeks at #1 in Danæviia and also reaching the top 10 of the contest (although it should've really been top 5, we had almost gone the whole year without a top 10 so we were pleased).

Following 'Hell On Earth' this was another brilliant dark electronica track which likewise had a big finish in the contest - it fairly easily got handed our 18 points.

Entry: Adriatique & Marino Canal - Home (feat. Delhia De France)

Final: DNQ

Semi-Final: 23rd of 31 (39 points)

Genre: Melodic house

Danævii Chart Run: 44-35-22-17-17-11-11-7-3-1-1-1-1-2-1-3-4-4-4-4-5-4-4-5-21-3-3-3-3-4-6-7-10-13-20-22-23-21-20-24-28-34-37-48-x-43-x

How does it hold up today?

Our sole DNQ of the second half of 2020 - and quite unlike our two DNQs earlier in the year this was wholly undeserved – the song currently sits at #2 in the Danæviia decade-to-date chart (behind Boris Brejcha's 'Gravity'). A real majestic piece of melodic house here with a hugely satisfying build.

A song that I had considered sending to the following contest, had it already not got sent this time around and won, surpassing the time I sent her. It was one of her best songs yet however, so it was very much deserved.

How does it hold up today?

An incredible piece and one I'm very happy to have as my third and final (to date) main contest win, the song turned me into a big fan of Worakls and in the space of two years he has secured five #1 hits in Danæviia, though this remains his best. I also went to his concert in London last year where this was played live.

How does it hold up today?

Grandbrothers like Worakls quickly became one of my current favourite acts around following the discovery of this track, which went on to be the biggest selling title of the year in Danæviia. It served us well in the final though it really ought to have kept our streak of following a win with a top 10. A beauty of a piano piece here.

Another song I'd considered was this which I eventually decided against as I was going to send Avicii later in the year anyway. Indeed, this song was co-written by Tim, which I won't lie did help a lot with its appeal, but it's a great song regardless.

Entry: Felon - Fine Lines (feat. Eke)

Final: 7th of 42 (231 points)

Semi-Final: 12th of 34 (71 points)

Genre: Commercial house

Danævii Chart Run: 10-7-12-5-2-1-1-1-3-4-4-3-4-6-7-10-7-7-13-14-15-15-20-34-35-30-36-36-35-34-35-45-x-30-32-48-x

How does it hold up today?

Well it's a right bop, which makes it all the more annoying that Felon have seemingly disappeared now - nothing has been released in the two years since this came out. One of the very best commercial house tracks to have come out this decade so it was great to get my name behind a tune like this again as most of this type of dance doesn't stand out enough for the contest.

BJSC 152: Tim Green feat. Felicia Douglass - Eastbound Silhouette

Tim Green is considered the leading producer in the growing sub-genre of 'organic house', an off-shoot of deep house which is described as very 'vibe-centric' and makes prominent use of acoustic percussion and vast atmospheres. Taken from his latest album of the same name, 'Eastbound Silhouette' is a beautiful and relaxing piece - its piano intro section particularly made it stand out for me, with the second half very well assisted by Felicia Douglass' vocal (who also gave me a high-placing finish in UP many years ago, featuring on 'Leaves' for Baile)

Below is Electronic Groove's review of the track

‘Eastbound Silhoutte’ completes the package, with another feature length coming in at over 11 minutes. Time is taken to set the scene, and it’s over a minute before we hear any rhythm, over two minutes before the bass. Radiating strings start it off before we’re introduced to the melody of keys that will serve for the duration. A polite sequence that breathes a happy sound, alongside the dreamy lullaby of Felicia Douglass and her backers.

We have chopped off a chunk of the track in the hope that a 6 minute runtime will give us more points over an 11 minute one, but I have linked both versions below for you to choose from.

'Danævii Radio Edit'

Full Length

Congratulations on qualifying! Yours was an entry that stood out when I listened to your semi!

Also, Zanmatony are ready to post their final review of the last 20 songs to make up the Danæviia 138 :: 100th anniversary extravaganza once you complete the last few songs left. :kink:

Entry: Attlas & Colleen D'Agostino - Feels Like

Final: DNQ

Genre: Melodic house

Danævii Chart Run: 3-3-7-8-6-5-4-6-1-2-4-8-13-19-30-38-41-46-x

How does it hold up today?

This is great, though an entry in hindsight I wish I'd held off from sending for two reasons. The obvious that it failed to qualify, and also that shortly afterwards I discovered another Attlas song that I went on to much prefer ('Faya') which I could have sent in its place (though it may end up being used for a future contest eventually if I run out of ideas). Regardless it's a beauty of a song though perhaps just landed in the wrong semi.

A great driving melodic techno track here, one of the best discoveries I'd made of this sub-genre thanks to BJSC. Unfortunately we don't see much from Arcodesia these days as this was the 2nd time running I'd given them top marks.

Entry: Gardenstate & GVN - Take Me There

Final: 28th of 41 (159 points)

Semi-Final: 9th of 33 (82 points)

Genre: Breakbeat

Danævii Chart Run: 27-2-2-4-11-16-18-18-23-27-30-41-47-x

How does it hold up today?

This was another of my 'running out of ideas so will opt for a song I enjoy a fair bit rather than one I really love' entries, so I couldn't be disappointed with its fairly low final placing. By no means a classic Danæviia entry but all of my modern entries are of high quality anyhow! I also thought it would be worth sending as it stood out a lot in the breakbeat genre being a bit reminiscent of what Franky Wah had been doing. Gardenstate would better themselves with 'Repondez-moi', although as it is a remix of a Eurovision entry that would've been disallowed from BJSC anyhow.

Danævii Chart Run: 4-8-5-5-1-2-2-3-4-5-11-14-21-20-20-22-25-35-50-x

How does it hold up today?

Well by this point I decided I needed to try trance again and who better to go with than Gareth Emery's #1 associate Ashley Wallbridge! With a high energy summery instrumental tune which was the highlight of his debut album, it certainly deserved better than the lowly position it got, but it wasn't particularly surprising either given the infamous "trance curse" going on at the time. I'd get a hit with trance again finally a year later.

How does it hold up today?

One of the most beautiful songs we ever sent, and all we get for it is SF24th!! Out of all my recent DNQs this one was the most baffling but hey ho. The song landed in my EOY top 10 for 2021 and 2022, so fair to say it's one that continues to sound amazing. Perhaps a bit too subtle for the taste of the semi-finalist voters though.

How does it hold up today?

It's Avicii, enough said! I had been umming over making this my 100th entry for years as it shows a different side to Avicii's songwriting and production than those only familiar with the hits know, although this is genuinely one of his very best album tracks anyhow. The result it got proved it was the right choice with it out-doing my 50th anniversary entry. This song will continue to age very well I would imagine even if for tragic reasons.

Commentary:

And so we reach the last 20 songs of this rollercoaster ride of travelling through the history of Danæviia. Midway through this section Zanmatony returned to BJSC and were able to assist Danæviia in the various semi-finals and finals that we shared.

There are many highlights from these last twenty songs, and the one that of course stands out the most is their winning entry from the contest before Zanmatony were permitted to return to the contest! Storm is one of the best pieces of music BJSC has ever produced, and it was a worthy winner for sure. It would have been our +18 if we were participants.

The peak entries from Boris Brejcha up to F.O.O.L & The Forgotten especially stood out to me as a strong era for entries from Danæviia, and they would all surely have gotten points from Zanmatony.

Then of course topping off the anniversary extravaganza, we have the late Avicii who was wisely selected as the 100th entry in a prestigious journey through Danæviia’s history, we were delighted to be able to support this entry on a very special occasion for your nation.

It has been very fun and educational going through these last 100 entries and I’ve enjoyed much of what has been sent since, and look forward to the upcoming 200th anniversary extravaganza later this decade! :D

thanks for following along Bré and Wardy! ~

Vassy flopping so much certainly did get my ass in gear as such, the run from Boris Brejcha to Felon I'd consider all to be real top-tier entries for me whereas the run from Moko to Vassy was comparatively mid - glad you rate most of those highly.

Not surprising that 'Storm' is the favourite here, it probably is for most of the core Danævii fanbase given the mass of high points it was awarded. Certainly a great track to have as my all-time second-best performer anyhow.

Thanks for sending this. I do feel this would have gotten you a possible top 10 if it were the 11 minute version but then again I was wrong on a few this month. It does sound like one of those that'd be a top 10 based off some of your other longer songs though and it was a beautifully building track throughout!

Still 19th is just as fine a result for it!

Glad you enjoyed it!

I'd like to think/hope people voted for my entry based on which version they preferred anyhow, if they checked out both (which I'm sure at least you did).

This actually making top 20 was a bit of a surprise to me really, I sent the cut as I suspected it would be completely dead on arrival otherwise and it being a bit shorter would give it a fighting chance in the semi (particularly as it takes 6 minutes before the vocal properly kicks in). Though given its eventual performance, I imagine it would've qualified regardless now.
