Keira Knightley made a better Queen Amidala than Natalie Portman too.

#5 Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

AVERAGE: 7.28

I wouldn't be fooled by the lack of high scores here, most people seemed to give Episode III a 7 or 8, which resulted in a 7.28, which when you consider what it's up against, is very decent. I was pretty impressed with this upon my recent watch, I think it's the only film of the prequels that I'd say there were a lot more positives than negatives. All preoccupations with making the saga appeal appeal to Children by this time, are gone, we're given a grittier, darker and meatier story, this time round, the action is, in places, incredible, and we get a brilliant villain (No, I don't mean Anakin/Darth)

I'll come back to the positives in a bit more detail but I can't ignore some of the negatives. The awful romance of Attack of the Clones still lingers somewhat in Revenge of the Sith, though it's a lot darker and is used sparingly. However, in the first act, we are given this horrendous sequence which is probably one of the worst exchanges in Star Wars history for me...

Anakin: You are so…beautiful.

Padme: It’s only because I’m so in love.

Anakin: No. No, it’s because I’m so in love with you.

Padme: [looks confused] Then love has blinded you?

Anakin: [laughs]Well…that’s not exactly what I meant.

Padme: [also laughs] But it’s probably true.

Seriously, who allowed that to make its way into the script?

Onto the good. Overall, the darker tone, seemed to have a better effect on the audience than the previous two films. Though people are harsh on Hayden Christensen, I actually thought his transition to the dark side was well executed and convincing, for the most part, anyway. For one, the murder of the young Jedi is particularly chilling. However, I think a lot of the credit lies with the brilliant Ian McDiarmid who plays Palpatine/Darth Sidious, the real backbone of the film's drama. Not just when he becomes violent, but the subtle moments earlier on, as he plants the seeds in Anakin's mind.

The Jedi purge, was also done rather well, we all knew it was coming, but it still remains a rather poignant and shokcing part of the film, even though most of the Jedi criminally got no lines any barely any screen time. The one thing that annoyed me, is, considering how powerful Jedi Masters are meant to be, how easily some of them were killed, particularly the handful that accompanied Mace Windu to arrest Palpatine...

Obi is kind of useless throughout the film, I didn't care much for the General Grievous subplot, though, it wasn't terrible.... his giant lizard made some quite irritating nosies though. I know Grievous' four lightsabers were meant to be a moment, but it felt a little overdone to me, especially as he's not a jedi. The Obi/Darth fight at the end is really something though, and was nicely paralleled with the Yoda/Sidious one. Both filled with a sense of urgency that the battles didn't have before.

It was a great taste of nostalgia at the end to hear James Earl Jones reprise his voice role, as we see the iconic suited-up Vader again. It was soon ruined by that awful 'Noooo!'

:nocheer: I was hoping that would be a fair few places higher !

Everything about III was amazing. The plot, the characters, the visual effects, the lightsaber duels, the emotion, I could go on.

Please say VII isn't next

Sith was incredibly powerful from Palpatine's office onwards. Before then it was really quite a slow film as you wait for the inevitable destruction of the Jedi. I do wish some of them, particularly Kit Fisto and Aayla Secura (who are so mesmerising as alien creations) had put up more of a fight but as it is it was pretty hard/powerful to watch the death of all these good people and the evil triumph, all through the poor decisions of one headstrong Jedi.

So perhaps we could have had less meandering around and more time given to Order 66 itself but still, a good film.

#4 Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

I can't be as objective about this one, as I'm still on hype mode, and I've only seen it once in a very short period of time, compared to all the others that I've seen at least 5 times each and with decades apart. So it's mostly positive for this one, as it stands.

It put up a good fight, but it just couldn't overtake any of the original trilogy in this rate. And by the way, THERE WILL BE SPOILERS. And I'm not blanking them out, because it will just not look as chaotically pretty otherwise. if you've rated I'm sure you've seen the film already, and wouldn't be in the thread if you hadn't. So this is your warning, Do not scroll down if you don't want to be spoiled.

The first thing to get out of the way is that, although a few aspects of the plot do mirror A New Hope, I do not think it's copying or is a remake. There plenty of interesting and fresh ideas as well as unique characters to make this a brilliant film in it's own right. Having the two main characters as a female jedi and a emotional torn up Stormtrooper both feel fresh and new ground for the franchise. There are issues with this film and the more people talk about them, the more I notice them, but all in all JJ did a perfect job of balancing the old from new. Obviously Luke was not used and Han was utlised largely in this film for obvious reasons, but I do feel as though General Leia was underused, considering she had decent amount of screen time - though at least she can shine in the next two films. It was also great to see R2D2 come to the rescue, just need Lando to appear in the next one!

We're also given another fantastic villain in Kylo Ren, someone not yet entirely powerful but emotional unpredictable and believable villain with a beautiful head of hair. Though, I can't say the same for Snoke, I mean they have time to work on him for the next film, but so far he's no Darth Sidious. He's an oversized monster with nothing exciting, sinister or scary about him so far. Hopefully he's not actually a giant.

Whilst taking a step back in time and giving us a slightly more "retro" Star Wars in comparison to George Lucas' previous trilogy, the action is still breathtaking and exciting. From the lightsaber battles to the grander scale ship fights, everything looks slick, modern and expensive without ever being too Over-the-top CGI.

One last honourable mention of Rey, who is a brilliant choice of heroine and I can't wait to see her develop in the next two films. (Same goes for Finn, really but he's not Jedi)

This isn't going too well now

A 9.15 average is rather good though. I'll focus on that more than the rankings :D

Edited by spam.txt

It was all going perfectly until that last one. (Although I assume people weren't giving it high scores due to how new it was and wasn't wanting to be too loony.)

Episode VII, for what it's worth, will be my absolute favourite in no time. It had everything you could want and need in the opener for a new trilogy. It set up central characters perfectly. It gave us some exciting and unpredictable twists. The CGI was the perfect amount and wasn't covered in it. Star Wars fans had the right to be nervous about this new one, especially after the prequels! But the fact it was handled with such care and managed to get the old cast in roles that were actually suited to them as opposed to just "throwing them in for nostalgia", it was fantastic.

I'm predicting the top 3 to be:

01. 'Empire Strikes Back'

02. 'Return Of the Jedi'

03. 'A New Hope'

Despite being so recent, The Force Awakens is probably already my favourite Star Wars movie  The characters, story, plot and visual effects are all stunning and with all the nostalgia the film comes with, absolutely incredible movie and experience
I thought 7 might sneak ahead of 6. Would also have put 1 last rather than 2.

Maybe a shock to some, but the least popular of the original trilogy on Buzzjack is A New Hope, originally just 'Star Wars' and the movie that started it all off. It's the film that created Darth Vader, the millennium falcon, the Jedi, R2D2, the cinnamon bun hairstyle, Han Solo, and about 75% of what makes Star Wars so iconic.

A lot happens in this film - so much of it is ICONIC and I'm running out of time, so can't go into much of it, but I doubt you need me to.

Disappointed a New Hope is lower than ROJ. I love the latter too, but the original film is just iconic on so many levels.
I'm surprised A New Hope is lower than Jedi but as I couldn't separate them maybe other people had the same problem. After all all 3 of the original trilogy are fantastic.

That's just plain weird! Nowhere else but Buzzjack could Return of the Jedi poll higher than A New Hope ;)

It was very close between 3 and 2 to be fair, I personally prefer Jedi a whole lot, so and pleased with that result.
Return of the Jedi is such good fun though and a really fitting end. It does sort of feel weird now after episode 7. And let's face most of the voters aren't old enough to get pissed off by ewoks.

Coming in second is the last part of the original trilogy, Return of the Jedi, which I have always thought had a bad rep. THE EWOKS ARE NOT THAT BAD.

There is so much to love in this film. I do find the first 40 minutes the best of the film but they are so good that they elevate the film hugely for me:

...But there are other highlights, the emotional finale, with Vader/Sidious. The hover-fight. Yoda's fairwell. And I actually enjoy the Ewok battle to some extent.

#1 Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

HIGH: Everyone.

It wouldn't be anything else at #1, almost always the unanimous favourite Star Wars film (though ANH slips in there sometimes).

This film expanded on its predecessor in almost every way; new characters, new worlds, more ambition, the stakes were higher in every way. The dinner table scene, for one, always gives you shivers, in fact everything to do with the cloud city always had me so transfixed.

tumblr_nehwxconoJ1si3gq6o1_500.gif

There's an emotion in both Empire and Jedi that I don't feel as much in A New Hope, and it's one of the things that makes me appreciate both films a lot more.

we also got introduced to 4 amazing characters in Empire Strikes Back for the first time; Master Yoda, Sidious, Lando And Boba Fett. But it was the 3 main heroes that make this film what it is. Han and Leia's love story is quirky, fun and slightly mushy, but is still an entertaining watch. And of course Luke is the beating heart and soul behind the film, you begin to route for him more than ever in his quest to becoming a Jedi Master and beating Vader, here.

One of the reasons this works so well as well, is all the loose ends it leaves you with. So much unfinished business, which is something that works well in Revenge of the Sith, too. I don't think any Star Wars movie should be left completely tied up with everyone smiling. It's something I didn't like about ROTJ, because even if you're finishing the films, while we do need closure to a point, I feel as though the Star Wars galaxy should always be an ongoing narrative.

My commentary was a bit crap at the end, as I started to get writer's block... but thanks to all who took part/read along, etc.

Me, flopping:
