The dangerous dog act of 1991 makes it illegal to own several breeds of dogs in the UK without exception from the courts.

These dogs are Pitbulls, Tosas, Fila Brasileiros and Dogo Argentinos.

With 2 attacks by Rottweilers on young children (5 months and 2 years) in the last few days (the first resulting in the death of the child), is it time to consider tougher legislations to regulate owning and breeding of Rottweilers, possibly resulting in them also being banned?

Frankly I dont see what banning the dogs is gonna achieve. There have been plenty of dog attacks which DONT get the sort of hysterical press coverage these two attacks have received, but because it's Rottweilers it makes for a good story. When I was a postie I was attacked by a Border Collie and had to have about 50 stitches put on my arm, but of course, that don't make the newspapers does it..? These sorts of attacks happen to Posties and the general public every day. Hell, a Jack Russell could do serious damage to a small bairn if it had a mind to....

And also I believe that about 90% of the time it's the owners that are at fault far more than the dog, these idiots get these things, thinking having a 'hard dog' is gonna make them macho and big... And they frankly have no idea how the hell to handle a dog like that most of them, I would certainly like to see perhaps owners of Rottweilers, Dobemanns or German Shepherds be forced to attend mandatory dog handling courses at their own expense, that would certainly weed out most of these Chav idiots who only get these sorts of dogs to look hard.... I would also like to see the RSPCA carry out mandatory home checks before people can own these sorts of dogs as well...

I think these measures, far more than just banning ownership will be far more positive in the long run. Also, closing down these disgusting puppy farms which are utterly cruel and inhumane would do a lot to ensure happy and healthy dogs were being bred which, in turn, would probably ensure that less dog attacks occur...

exactly what clare and i thought when we saw this thread.

My aunt's cat got mauled to death by a dog. But it's the way the dog was brought up. You can tell what sort of family owned it...

Shame the cat was deaf, if it heard the dog coming it could have got away in time. They had that cat for about 17/18 years, was older than the kids.

my Uncle had a lovely rottweiler that wouldn't hurt a fly. She was a lovely dog

It was probably a lovely dog because it was being brought up in a good home environment by owners that actually gave a damn, and I'm betting also your Uncle bought the dog from a reputable breeder as opposed to a puppy farm..... It's the age-old nature/nurture agrument in a way really innit...? Which is why I dont go in for this whole 'devil dog' argument. Certain irresponisble people DO need to be stopped from having these dogs, bur frankly the sort of people I'm talking about, I wouldn't even let 'em have a hamster....

no...its my experience that most Rottweilers are thought to be dangerous and therefore bought and trained as guard dogs making them dangerous

i know plenty of people that own them as pets and have never had trouble, unless you call them crushing you by sitting on your lap dangerous

I believe that in at least one of the recent cases they were guard dogs...

A pitbull or Rottweiler seems to be nothing more than an accessory for the new breed of chavs... to go with the revolting Reeboks and Argos gold rings.

These dogs are bred to kill... they're highly dangerous, manipulative, clever and territorial, and are bred for a specific purpose.

There's thousands of breeds of dogs - and no argument in the world will make me think that either of these breeds of dog are suitable for domestic pets.

They simply aren't. In the same way as you wouldn't keep a wolf as a pet - these 2 breeds are NOT household pets.

We hear of the killings in the tabloids and on the news - what you don't hear so often are the stories of random attacks - which, we are now told, happen daily.

I would like both these breeds to be muzzled in public.... but moreso - I'd like them to be phased out as domestic pets in the UK.

Sorry, but I disagree with the last bit, you cannot blame a dog for the fact that it is not being properly cared for or trained by the owner. I'd rather see the owners face a very hefty fine, an unlimited ban from ownership of any breed of dog, as well as a prison sentence if they cannot be arsed to look after them properly and they attack someone. I think these sorts of sanctions as well as the ones I outlined in my original post will have the desired effect of deterring the Chavs from owning them...

At the end of the day, it is humans who create 'dangerous dogs', Rotties can make wonderful, affectionate pets in the right hands, a friend of mine has two of them and they are adorable, healthy, happy dogs who are intensely loyal to my friend and his family...

I heard about how the Rottweilers ripped that baby behind, it's disgusting, the dogs should be put town and the owners should get punished.

BUT yes Rottweilers are dangerous, but only if they have been trained to be dangerous. If you teach a dog to kill intruders, then thats what it will do. But in my street there's a kid who owns one and she (the dog that is :P ) is so lovely, she's been trained to be so friendly!

So it's the owners and how it was trained that is to blame

Two stories in the local paper here.

There have been reports of locals near Claudia Schiffer's home in Suffolk being afraid to walk on right of way footpaths through her estate.

Claudia story.

There was a Staffordshire bull terrier left in charge of a 13 year old girl.

13 Year Old In Charge.

Seems to be an influx on this type of story.

I think it would be wrong to automatically ban these dogs. I would suggest an investigation into the track record of the owners and what neighbours say about how they manage their dog before any decision is made.

Rottweilers are only dangerous if they are handled wrongly or mistreated. Like most dogs.

I walked past one on the street and it bit my leg. Expain that. : <_<

It's a difficult one this.

A neighbour of mine has a rottweiller the size of a bear and 2 yelpie terriers. The rottweiller to my eyes seems a big stupid dork of a dog who always lets you clap him. The terriers are vile creatures, always snapping and snarling.

Dogs can be unpredictable though. Even the gentlest beast can turn on someone out of the blue. Who knows why. Maybe it has a bad toothache or a headache or something and just can't be bothered.

The problem is, if one of the vile terriers decides to attack me as I walk past I'd have a fair chance of pulling it off me and kicking it 100 feet down the road.

If Rottie has a bad day I'd probably be dead. No way could I remove something that big with such a bite pressure. And the problem is that even a grown man probably couldn't get it off me either.

Small dogs are often worse.... Especially if they're in the same house with a big dog - it's called 'over-compensating' if you get my meaning....

It was always the horrid, yappie little dogs that I had most problem with when I was a Postie....
