It's funny because the SIGNS were all there about how clueless she could be regarding what does/doesn't work, but the point where nobody seemed to tell her NO seemed to come some point in the last few years.

^ never heard that before (and don't believe she did)

I do remember her commenting that she was shoreside that everyone wanted it to be the second single .

This is Madonna though. Its the sort of thing she would (and indeed did) say.

Rita Hayworth gave good face

06. Vogue // I'm Breathless // 9.22

(3: Griff 5: Alejandjob // 11: River Lea, dandy*, Kylie Jackson, Maurice, Qween 10: Liam, SamJudd, ♦ ketalina ♦, 🌚🌚🌚, Mango, NotFurLong, Chapman, Bjork, princess_lotti, mr_pmt, HausofKubrick, Jay, jark, liamk97)

Ranking surprisingly 'low' considering its status and near-universal love (pitchforks being sharpened for Griff again after briefly redeeming himself with the 11/10 score for 'Sorry') is the culture-impacting, trend-setting, pop gold moment of Vogue. Ludicrously, the song's creation stems back to plans for a new B-side to raise interest in Like a Prayer's sixth single 'Keep It Together', but fortunately it wasn't long before all parties involved realised how indisputably essential it was to be released in its own right. The daringly long intro triumphs magnificently as the progression of strings, clicks and drums sets the tone of such stylish ambience, before Madonna commands us to collectively strike a pose - a phrase now so deeply synonymous with Madonna that it's hard to refrain from pulling a bold hand gesture whenever it is mentioned. Escapism in music has always been a popular theme in Madonna's work but never has she made it so inviting and appealing: music doesn't care who you are or what's going on in your life, it will take you on a journey and make you experience things you couldn't imagine. Everyone is equally as vulnerable and intimate when they let their inhibitions go and lose themselves and their bodies in the music. The inclusion of the underground 'voguing' introduced an empowering dance move that reflected the manner and grace of style icons - which then influenced the middle-8 rap that is the definition of iconic - and makes you feel like a superstar, whilst the music genre that is associated with it set the mould for mainstream dance music throughout the decade and is still alive and well today. The immaculate video that is so wonderfully directed and choreographed yet again proved how presenting a song with a visual accompaniment is crucial for making a single worth investing in and not just a tool to advertise your album with, and lest we forget the dynamic, theatrical performances that regenerated hype and affection in the song and changed the way live performances were delivered. 'Vogue' is a celebration of the past and the future, music and fashion, love and life, and is the pinnacle of Madonna's legacy that is cemented in the fabric of music history.

Flop fan [2]

Whilst I'm always here for Vogue I don't rank it anywhere near her top 10.

Liam that's what I was referring too that quote .

Vogue is a classic . I think people prob don't rate it higher because it is so well known and one of her most played songs.

You can't deny the incredible video and live performances .

Insanity

I actually can't believe there are people who don't GET IT. If I believed in something as archaic and pointless as a 'god' I would PRAY FOR YOU. It truly owns the label 'iconic' and is as much a STATEMENT of intent (and also a little dose of self aggrandisation from Madge) as it is a jaw droppingly good pop song. The production (I especially love the I'm Breathless version which layers her vocals on a few lines in the middle 8 for added IMPAKT), the video, everything about it is 11/10 and it's only second to Hung Up for me on account of that having a very PERSONAL connection.

The spoken bit is amazing but otherwise, an average song.

That's pretty much how I feel. I love it when it comes on at a party, but in comparison to the iconic spoken part, the rest of the song is slightly flat in comparison.

(Flat probably isn't the right word, it's still an easy 8/10 of a song)

I am team John and am shocked it's getting such a lukewarm response :o (although it came 6th which is good). I think the fact it's so iconic and overplayed and highly rated might make some people not think it lives up to that hype? The video and spoken parts make it though <3

I especially enjoy Vogue because of this

05. Papa Don't Preach // True Blue // 9.34

(6: Griff // 11: Joe, River lea, NotFurlong 10: Liam, SamJudd, jakewild, Mango, Kylie Jackson, Bjork, princess_lotti, Qween, HausofKubrick, Alejandjob, Jay)

And the True Blue album goes out on the highest of highs. I'm unsure of where to start with Papa Don't Preach, it's an easy contender for one of my favourite songs of all time. Here, Madonna tackles the still often very controversial subject of teenage pregnancy. She is adamant she doesn't want an abortion, despite people telling her she's not ready to raise a child. She pleads to her father that she is ready, that she loves her baby-daddy and is certain that she's keepin' her baby. How often can you say that a song so, dark and heavy, thematically could be such feel so euphoric when it plays? There is so much defiant power in the vocals and lyrics, it takes you on a real journey. I stand by that you won't find a Madonna song with a more imaginative and dramatic intro and in fact the entire instrumental is fantastic. The whole package is a sometimes hopeful, yet also naive but still empowering - there's a lot of conflicting emotions in the subtext, but the core theme is Madonna's deep longing for her father's acceptance. It's, to me, a stroke of genius in music, and one that doesn't come by too often. Even with its iconic status I still find it somehow underrated next to some of her other huge hits. The fact only two other members dished out one of their 11s here hurts me somewhat. To make things more exciting the video is almost as interesting and moving as the song that goes with it. <3

What a song (and write up Joe! I know how much you love this song )

This song genuinely helped me to come out to my mum a few years back. I listened to it after having a few thoughts about doing it and by the end of the listen through I was certain and adamant that it was going to happen - precipes to this I never dreamed I would ever do it. For that reason alone it holds a very special place in my heart but even without that, it's an incredible song.
