I knew that'd happen. :D Same, I was kind of as relieved as France were in that 89th minute and then again six minutes later *.* Do feel bad for Albania, they really did prove themselves defensively and were so close to getting their first ever point. Yeesh, the frustration at all those missed chances for France though. June 15, 20169 yr That was a sad end to the match for Albania, I was hoping that they would win but France struck in the 89th minute again before making it 2-0. France have now qualified for the round of 16 as a result of their win tonight, Albania would be eliminated now if only the top 2 teams in each group could go through but they have the 3rd place league as a last chance to make it through.
June 15, 20169 yr They played so well tonight Albania - play some good technical football. France just started poring forward in the end and there was more and more gaps. Hope the Albanians get something from their final game. It's interesting this tournament how so many unknown sides like Romania, Hungary and Albania have shown how they thoroughly deserve to be in the tournament.

For me it also shows a gulf in the quality of the top sides. Spain/England/Germany/Italy/Portugal/France (okay maybe the exception if Benzema was playing) are nowhere near as good as they have been in the previous 10 years. Can probably even count Brazil/Argentina in that as well. International football is more open at the moment as we're lacking truly top teams. Any team can be set up to play defensive football well. I've not seen one team so far that has been utterly outclassed.
June 16, 20169 yr Possibly but i would argue Hungary and Albania didnt really set up defensively they set up as a team atacking and defending together.
June 16, 20169 yr Teams like Iceland and Albania are a lot more organized than people give them credit for. Their strategy against anyone, not just the tops teams, is to play back and counter-attack. Obviously they don't have the same level of talent, but they make up for it with organization and togetherness. I think there are just more top teams than there used to be and a large group of them are equal near the top. Argentina is the top team in the world right now, in my eyes and all the major rankings agree with me (FIFA/ELO).

It's fantastic seeing teams like Wales, Iceland and Hungary doing so well and exceeding expectations.

June 16, 20169 yr I think it would be a good idea as the tournament progress to put a cross next to the team and poster that gets eliminated in the sweepstake until there is only one team and poster left, e.g. Romania - Hazza Chapman From the round of 16 onwards in particular it would make entertaining reading I think.
