July 1, 20169 yr Speculation on another forum that Gove may not even be in the last two. At lot of Boris's 100 odd backers think he's stabbed him in the back according to some paapers today.
July 1, 20169 yr It's like voting to be pummelled to death by a baseball bat but getting to choose what colour it is. so on that basis, the skinniest and weakest physically should win. May it is....
July 1, 20169 yr That's kind of the point of a Prime Minister - he/she is chosen by the majority of democratically elected ministers, first among equals and all that. But i think in this situation we shouldnt have to wait until 2020 to have our say!
July 1, 20169 yr But i think in this situation we shouldnt have to wait until 2020 to have our say! It's not an unusual situation. Roughly half of the changes in PM since WWII have happened because of a change in the leadership of the governing party. Only once, Anthony Eden in 1955, did the new PM call an early election. According to our system, 35,201 Witney electors are the only people who "voted for Cameron" at the last election. If the new PM decides to jettison most of the Tory manifesto and implement their own ideas, there would be some justification in calls for a fresh election, but they could only be forced into it by a vote of no confidence.

Considering Boris pulled out because he was down to 25 backers, it'd be surprising if that many suddenly decided they were that loyal to him.
July 1, 20169 yr On a point of interest, what Prime Ministerial milestones that would be broken if any of these five individuals were to become Prime Minister? I've been racking my brains to think of any for these individuals, but a lot of the big ones (ie. oldest, youngest, etc) don't seem to apply. Can any of you think of any? The only obvious one that comes to mind would be that Liam Fox would be the first Catholic Prime Minister, but seeing as he doesn't have a snowball's chance of getting the post, it's a moot point.
July 1, 20169 yr Gove would make it three out of four Scottish PMs. Even the exception has a Scottish name. He may also be the first PM to have been adopted (unless anybody knows otherwise).
July 1, 20169 yr Stephen Crabb would be the first bearded PM for a while, and probably the first whose name is almost an STD.
July 1, 20169 yr Liam Fox would be the first Prime Minister to accede to the role after losing a Cabinet job for gross misconduct.
July 2, 20169 yr Andrea Leadsom is gathering support amongst MP's wanting to stop Gove making the final two. She could be the dark horse here or if not I think May could make her Chancellor. Time we had a woman and she has a banking background.

Time we had a woman and she has a banking background. After the events of the last decade, I'm still struggling to understand how having a banking background is supposed to be a good thing.

Time we had a woman and she has a banking background. Nigel farage has a banking background. A bankrupt background. He's been living off the EU since his company went under. He's got a free tax payer-paid wage for doing nothing for another 2 and a half years then he'll have to find a proper job (he has done nothing whatsoever for the area he was elected to represent. NOTHING at all in all those years). Bankers, of course, bankrupted the entire world economy. Not really something to push if you want to get elected!
July 3, 20169 yr May came across really well on Peston on ITV this morning and seemed more human and jovial than I've thought before. Reckon she'll be a good PM.
July 3, 20169 yr Im sure she will dig out the vans to advertise for illegal immigrants to go home. Again. Sounds as though she intends to use the status of legal immigrants as a bargaining chip. That throws up the possibility of sending in the troops to send millions with british born children and houses and property back to country of birth. Followed by all brits in the eu being forcibly repatriated. She already has forced out non eu people earning less than 36k even if they are married with british children, as i understand some net comments are going... Of course it could all be election bullshit but i have never trusted her for a minute. Never will, shes just less bad than 3 of the 5 candidates.
July 5, 20169 yr Liam Fox has been eliminated in the 1st round of MP voting. Theresa May topped the list gaining near enough 50% of the vote, followed by Leadsom, Gove, then Crabb.
