I thought it'd be a good idea to make a thread to discuss Leona's role in the Broadway Revival of Cats as she's going to be participating for a few months in the show. The show has started public previews and opens on July 31st. Leona's been sounding amazing so far and hope I'll get the oppotunity to go to New York to see her perform in it.

Has anyone booked tickets to see Leona at all?

I hope I won't get in trouble for this but a snippet from act 1 is on YouTube now.

Not the full song from act 2, but you can already get a grasp of how Leona is delivering the song. Sounding really good.

Don't worry you won't! Leona sounds great, cannot wait for a full clip from her performance of "Memory" in the second act. *_*

She looks amazing! I hope we get a HD video of her performance someday. *_*
Are we likely to get a video of her whole performance in Cats? I really want to see her in it.

Another (short but brilliant) snippet.

Nothing could ever beat Streisnd's version of the song, but Leona does a fab job by the sounds of it.
I'm assuming (and hoping) a cast album will be out with this? Her rendition sounds amazing. I saw that Josh Groban has released a song from his new show so maybe she'll do the same?
Just read the reviews. They seem positive in my opinion - critical, definitely, but all around just positive. Everyone agrees audiences are going to lap this up, and perhaps that was the overall intention of the production. Happy to hear Leona sound incredible. The Hollywood Reporter called her second performance 'spine-chilling'.

The reviews largely view her singing in a positive light but are very critical of her acting and stage presence. This role will be very much viewed as a celebrity casting and being such she will have to really impress to garner praise.

True, tt. But with some creative endeavors, a performer just needs to be effective as opposed to a stand-out. What I gather from the critiques of her acting was that 1) she doesn't capture the woe of Grizabella in both appearance and performance and 2) the performance doesn't match up to Elaine Paige's. But does it hurt the production at all? Don't think so. The whole thing is comparable to a Marvel flick - all about the staging and nothing else. Wish I could see it for myself.

That really doesn't surprise me as those are the comments she's been getting her entire career.

I knew she would knock 'Memory' out of the park (and her voice sounds great on it). I was always dubious about whether she could act though.

I just watched that GMA memory performance. Terrific, although, admittedly, Leona falls flat acting-wise in the middle part of the song. I'd chalk it up to the song getting more technical, and Leona abandoning the faux-operatic style she uses to open the song. Hard to really emote and also pay attention to the technicalities of a song, especially a big number like Memory. Best bet is cooling on full-on singing for a breathier, more staccato, falsetto singing-style. Or just a change of direction where she doesn't have to stay rooted on one spot or stare directly at the crowd. All the same, it still works brilliantly for an audience. Leona has a naturally emotional voice. I don't see how any walks out dissatisfied from her performance/the production.
The GMA performance of Memory was absolutely phenomenal. The best Leona has sounded in years! :o Her XF days vocals are returning!
