September 25, 20168 yr Author near misses during N-Trance's week: Underworld - Two Months Off [#12] KsE9iXoXB6s Underworld's last top 20 hit... until ten years later when they came back with 'Caliban's Dream' reaching #12 off the back of being heavily used in the Olympics. Jurgen Vries - The Theme [#13] DVQbCpQLs0U Great trance song! Jurgen Vries would return to the chart at #3 with his follow-up (which may appear in this thread) but personally this one is a lot better.
September 25, 20168 yr Porn Kings *__* what a name. Shake Ya Shimmy is quite the jam too. I don't really remember Shake Ya Shimmy, I rediscovered it recently. I do remember Commander Tom - Attention well though, that woman posing constantly in the video, :) and the tune itself sounds like something from 2 Unlimited.

Would that make Caliban's Dream the last trance tune to make the top 40? Albeit stripped back trance?
September 25, 20168 yr That classic "Dave on the train" line! Hugely impressive that Scooter hit as high as #4 with the followup, they really were unstoppable during their 2002-3 commercial peak. Amazingly this is their only number 1 hit in their native Germany - over twenty top tens from 1994 to 2009 but only Nessaja managed to make its way to the top. A later Scooter track that I thought was going to be way bigger was 2008's , which was set up for a single release but later cancelled in favour of another track (more of which below). It's got that 'classic' Scooter sound with the vaguely emotive high-pitched singing as heard on Nessaja, Weekend etc, but with a slightly harder dance backing - went top ten in Germany but that was it I think. It was cancelled in favour of the Status Quo-featuring ', which again could have charted seriously well in a lolz-novelty way but they properly messed up the release - it came out in stores in early November only to be immediately pulled a couple days in, the reason given that a 'major event' was planned regarding the song later in the year which I assumed was some kind of Scooter/Quo TV or live appearance, which ended up not happening. It got quietly re-released at Christmas and charted at #57 officially, but #19 on the (still just relevant) physical singles chart. I did read that early physical midweeks had it at #10, but that's a hazy memory I'm unable to confirm. Edited September 25, 20168 yr by BillyH
September 25, 20168 yr Author and one near miss during Scooter's run: Milk Inc. - Walk On Water [#10] bW6PowAIAxg Watered down (:basil:) eurotrance, not that special. Was their 2nd of 2 top 10 hits and 3 top 20s. -x- @TheSnake I only heard of Shake Ya Shimmy recently too, to be fair though it wasn't that big of a hit. EDIT: and 'Calbian's Dream' was definitely not trance.
September 25, 20168 yr @TheSnake I only heard of Shake Ya Shimmy recently too, to be fair though it wasn't that big of a hit. EDIT: and 'Calbian's Dream' was definitely not trance. Would Caliban's be deep house then? Commander Tom's Attention was bigger, it did make top 20 for week and I remember it being played a lot on The Box. Walk On Water I do remember quite a bit, its a nice tune.
September 25, 20168 yr Two Months Off and The Theme are INCREDIBLE jams, hugely different but absolute classics in their respective genres. I saw Underworld a couple times in the late noughties and Two Months Off sounded immense live on the loudspeakers, it's best as its full-length album version though as the radio edit cuts all the build out which is half of the track's magic. Underworld in general is just a brilliant group with way, way more jams other than (the also awesome) Born Slippy which everyone knows. 1997's 'Moaner' almost gave me a heart attack when I first heard it blasted out at a festival, one of the most intense dance tracks I'd ever heard and I don't think I've ever raved so hard in my life to any tune since. Only reached #79 but to be honest you can't imagine daytime radio circa twenty years ago going anywhere near it. HlvzBzLH65w Shake Ya Shimmy's been a fave of mine for about a decade, it's on the three-disc Clubland Classix CD which is an awesome mix of huge trance-pop noughties anthems and more obscure stuff. And 'Walk On Water' - could be ok with a remix but in its official form is a bit too weedy and lifeless for me. And, again, that's someone miming to someone else's vocals in the video... September 25, 20168 yr Author Would Caliban's be deep house then? have you even heard the song? it doesn't really even qualify as any sort of dance, though it is a nice listen. OiQaU9oIHjs
September 25, 20168 yr have you even heard the song? it doesn't really even qualify as any sort of dance, though it is a nice listen. OiQaU9oIHjs I have heard it (I shall forgive this insult of The Snake's musical knowledge) , there is a mild deep house style beat, but yes I agree it is not quite dancey enough to be deep house.

It was on the iTunes top 100 for a few days.
September 25, 20168 yr That's the problem with Scooter, UK radio hates them. I remember being seriously pissed off at the Radio 1 chart show when their album reached #1 - I think they only played a short clip of Jumping All Over The World and then sort of faded it out and went "Ok, that's enough of that" and sneered at it for a bit before moving on, which felt hugely disrespectful to all the thousands who'd bought it that week. Like it's not "real music" unless it's a load of blokes with guitars.

September 27, 20168 yr Cant think of a drum & bass song with trance influences tbh. Although I can think of a song that brings together trance and breakbeat. What about this one, I have rediscovered, number 38 in 2014 ES8U9phh0SE
September 27, 20168 yr Both Scooter hits are absolutely incredible - some of my favourite early 00s hits, and The Logical Song gave me a pointer to what is now my favourite Supertramp song when I got around to listening to them. Honestly seems so weird that they were that successful with dance-rap and pitched up vocals, I do love some of the craziness of the early 00s sometimes.
September 27, 20168 yr Jakatta ft Seal - My Vision http://xlx.kr/wing/data/board/myhomeboard/file_in_body/1/cover44.jpg Date 12th October 2002 3 Weeks (13 weeks) Official Chart Run 6-8-15-20-28-40-51-75 (+ 3 individual weeks 99, 100 and 100 until 1/2/2003) (11 weeks) Vpc3lFR0AwY This was the fifth top 40 from dance music veteran Dave Lee, going by the name of Jakatta for his second hit as that pseudonym. This song goes against the prevailing trend of the time by having a male singer on the track. The singer in question is Seal, an English singer who had several well known hits in the 90s before this, including of course the 1991 house anthem that is 'Killer (ft Adamski)'. This is another house tune, but this time progressive house, with some trance influence showing the dominance of trance in 2002 was influencing some house tracks too at the time. The track contains some very nice slow paced minimal piano music, in all it is quite a minimal track at first but builds up more as it gets going. Jakatta had one more top 40 hit in the UK later in 2002, One Fine Day, reaching number 39 later in 2002, and then Dave Lee didn't have another hit in the charts for three years. But then in 2005, as the disco house sound he had started to help popularise in the late 90s started to return to the top 40 he would make a track under his old pseudonym with his old friend Taka Boom, a follow up to their 1999 disco house hit Must Be The Music, 'Make A Move On Me' and this was released in early 2006, reaching number 11. Seal would have one more top 40 hit in 2003 on his own (Get It Together) but then became more of an album hit scoring artist. Finally a personal note, I remember this being played a lot on the radio at the time and I liked it, because it was relaxing and mentioned summer in the chorus. Quite why it was released in the autumn with those chorus lyrics I don't know (Demi Lovato last year teas). Shout out to Big Brovaz - Nu Flow btw, one of my favourite dancey tunes from the time and still one of my faves (number 3 on the third week of My Vision) - not dancey enough for this thread though :(. Goodness me how the musical standard went down after the debut. The two female members might be back later on the thread with some great dance tunes under a new name though....

Honestly seems so weird that they were that successful with dance-rap and pitched up vocals, I do love some of the craziness of the early 00s sometimes. Of course there is Dreamer by CK and Supreme Dream Team, which makes number 20 in early 2003, a cover of another Supertramp song (and the definition of the boom boom boom type of dance music with loud percussion I remember my dad hated at the time - and I wasn't a fan either). I like Dreamer now. Its in that so bad its good category. There will also be those Soda Club and Dan Wayne covers which I hated at the time (boom boom boom eurodance versions of 80s songs). Even these are preferable to the dull tropical house covers now (even though they are loud and slightly headache inducing). And Flip and Fill got involved with a cover of 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody' Edited September 27, 20168 yr by TheSnake
September 27, 20168 yr Author near misses during Jakatta's 3 weeks: Ian Van Dahl - Try [#15] J9dbLlwGyNo amazingly they were still going strong chartwise on their fourth single and indeed they would achieve five top 20 hits. Dirty Vegas - Days Go By [#16] D0eNHu3BlRI British house group. originally #27 in 2001 it was re-released and charted a bit higher. no top 40s would follow. Trinity X - Forever [#19] 4_58c42laY4 what was the obsession with dance songs called 'Forever'?? well here was another one. Eurotrance too.
September 27, 20168 yr The Trinity X one I dont remember but those are mighty trance synths in it, and it sounds good.
September 27, 20168 yr I do quite like that Jakatta collab. with Seal, as you say it was his first appearance since Adamski in 1990 on the dance chart. It feels more like an autumnal track to me, the piano is wistful and sad (juxtaposed against the fast beat and uplifting synths) - and it reminds me VIVIDLY of the October half term that year when we grew our own pumpkins and had loads of the things lit up in our garden. That and “Electrical Storm” by U2 and “There By The Grace Of God” by Manic Street Preachers, there was also a great track called “Take Me With You” by Cosmos in the Top40 at the time too..
September 27, 20168 yr This was the fifth top 40 from dance music veteran Dave Lee, going by the name of Jakatta for his second hit as that pseudonym. This was his 3rd hit as Jakatta (after American Dream and So Lonely), and at least his 8th in total (he had also had 3 as Joey Negro and 2 as Raven Maize).
