Ready For The Weekend I didn't like at first for some reason but eventually I got to really like it, helped by its great uplifting chorus and its brilliant music video going with it so well.

One of the last great hits from the funky house subgenre.

I like RFTW but can’t say I listen to it very often, but out of all the singles from that era it is the weakest imo!

I agree. I'm Not Alone > You Used To Hold Me >>> Flashback >>> Ready For The Weekend.

David Guetta featuring Akon - Sexy Bitch

Date: 23 August 2009

Weeks at #1: 10 weeks

Official Chart Run: 1-2-3-2-2-2-3-5-10-13-18-24-31-36-35-43-47-59-52-33-45-54-65-68-73-78-86-83-85-95-90-85-xx-92-88-96-97-xx-100-89-xx-99 (26 weeks top 75 +14 top 100)

Another monster hit now for the other monster DJ: that's right, French DJ legend David Guetta grabs another dance number 1, with the assistance of Akon on vocals, with "Sexy Bitch" - or "Sexy Chick" if you're listening clean. This was the follow up to the huge "When Love Takes Over" featuring Kelly Rowland which topped the charts earlier in the year, and taken from Guetta's 4th album "One Love".

Written in just one night in collaboration with Akon, Giorgio Tuinfort, Jean-Claude Sindres and Sandy Vee, Guetta was eager to capitalise on the success of his previous single. Akon at the time was still popular, having already hit the number 1 spot in the UK with "Lonely" (2005), "Smack That" (2006) and "Just Dance" (2009). It was Guetta's 2nd UK number 1 single, though Stateside it peaked a little lower at number 5. As of October 2014, it had sold 740,000 combined copies in the UK. Stateside it has sold over 3.5 million combined copies. Here it tops the dance chart for 10 weeks in two separate runs - held off for a week in its second week by the next number 1.

The release was not without its controversy, from lyrics considered to be disrespectful to women, to the music video being offensive to Buddhism as a Buddha statue appeared in many shots of the video. The latter led to Akon being barred from entering Sri Lanka where he was due to perform.

Official remixes were released by Chuckie and Lil Jon, AfroJack, Koen Groeneveld, Abel Ramos, and Footloose.

The impact of "Sexy Bitch" was phenomenal. You couldn't go to a club without hearing this for years. I remember hearing it in a club in Monaco in 2015, still popular 6 years on. It's certainly one of the biggest dance hits I can remember from this century so far.

Parent album "One Love" heralded further singles - "One Love" featuring Estelle (#46) and "Memories" featuring Kid Cudi (#15), and then "Gettin' Over You" featuring Chris Willis, Fergie and LMFAO (#1) and "Who's That Chick?" featuring Rihanna (#6) from disc 2 of the "One More Love" re-issue. "I Wanna Go Crazy" featuring will.i.am was also released as a promo track, reaching #92 in the UK. From the same era, and included on disc 2 of "One More Love", were "Commander" with Kelly Rowland (#9) and "Acapella" with Kelis (#5), Guetta's remix of Madonna's "Revolver" (#130), and his earlier singles "Love Don't Let Me Go (Walking Away)" vs. The Egg and featuring Chris Willis, and "Love Is Gone" also featuring long-time collaborator Chris Willis. David Guetta will be no stranger to the top spot in the 2010s - it's clear his impact hereon was absolutely massive - though it could be argued a lot of his output nowadays has been watered down so much that the quality has dissipated.

Akon at the time was still popular, having already hit the number 1 spot in the UK with "Lonely" (2005), "Smack That" (2006) and "Just Dance" (2009).

Akon did not feature on Just Dance (although he did co-write the track according to Wikipedia) - it was just Lady Gaga and Colby O'Donis who were credited on it.

Although he isn't officially credited on the single, I felt he provides significant enough background vocal and songwriting input to warrant it being mentioned.

Dizzee Rascal - Holiday

Holiday_cover.jpg

Date: 30 Aug 2009

Weeks at #1: 1 week

Official Chart Run: 1-4-6-8-9-13-22-31-38-47-53-69-92-86-93-x-65-90-x (17 weeks top 100)

Following on from 'Bonkers', Dizzee continued to rap over dance beats which gave him his third official and dance chart number one with 'Holiday'. Due to the massive success that was David Guetta's 'Sexy Chick', this was only able to sneak in a single week at the top of the dance chart. It is the second song that Calvin Harris produced for Dizzee following on from 'Dance Wiv Me' (another former #1) and the chorus is sang by Chrome who also appeared in 'Dance', however neither got official artist credits on the song making it officially Dizzee's first song number one all by himself (one more of these would follow, 2010's 'Dirtee Disco', which we will not be counting as a dance chart #1 despite its obvious disco influenced production, though that also had an uncredited guest vocalist).

Calvin originally had the idea for the song and tried to sell it to The Saturdays, but they turned it down leading to him giving it to Dizzee (who then wrote his verses). Released in the late summer of 2009, it was timed well to coincide with when people were going or had just been on holiday, and with the Ibiza reminiscent production and fun lyrics about taking your girl on holiday and having a party, it was always going to be a strong seller. Calvin was still in the top five with 'Ready For The Weekend' at #4 when this went to #1, perhaps an indicator of how much he would dominate the charts in the decade to come though even then no-one predicted just how big he'd become. As for Dizzee, he is now back to making grime music as I explained in the entry for 'Bonkers' not too long ago.

The song sold 80k in its first week and has passed 400k total sales, becoming Dizzee's third biggest-selling song after his first two number ones.

There are just two dance chart number ones left to go now!

Armand van Helden & A-Trak presents Duck Sauce - aNYway (#22)

honourable mentions:

La Roux - In For The Kill (Skream Remix) [combined with the original it was a #2 hit, we aren't counting it as a dance #1 but the remix did sell a fair bit and was a major breakthrough for dubstep]

Agnes - Release Me (#3, debatable whether this counts as dance or not, ultimately we decided it didn't)

Loved "Holiday"! I remember absolutely rinsing that one in the first weeks after it came out. Still enjoy it now.

Also love both Prodigy tracks from that list - such a strong era for them - and the Nneka/Chase & Status track - such a good remix and went on to be sampled by Rita Ora in "R.I.P."

Quite a few other tracks of note such as "Poppiholla", "Heartbreak...", "I Remember", “Get Shaky", "Rock It", "Watch The Sun Come Up" (Example was actually good once), "Flashback" and "Ghosts n Stuff". Dance music was good fun but perhaps I was just very much a university student :P

Chase & Status featuring Plan B - End Credits

End_Credits_single_cover_by_Chase_and_Status.jpg

Date: 08 November 2009

Weeks at #1: 5 weeks

Official Chart Run: 9-13-21-31-37-42-67-64-73-70-65-73-73-86-79-xx-95-xx-81-86-87-72-88-87-86-89-xx-91-xx-87-70-64-94-94-68-47-73-63-81-xx-90 (20 weeks top 75 +16 top 100)

Time for the rise of duo Saul Milton and Will Kennard - also known as Chase & Status - and Benjamin Paul Ballance-Drew - known better as Plan B. Drum and bass single "End Credits" was originally a standalone release, but was confirmed as a track on sophomore album "No More Idols" which was released over a year later.

"End Credits" was not the pair's first collaboration together, as they had already released (the rather excellent) "Pieces" together, taken from "More Than Alot", the debut album from Chase & Status. "Pieces" charted at #70 in the UK Singles Chart back in 2008. Plan B had had one other top 40 hit - "Mama (Loves A Crackhead)" - which hit #41 back in 2006 - taken from his debut album "Who Needs Actions When You Got Words". Chase & Status had hit the top 75 once further with "Against All Odds" featuring Kano - #45 earlier in 2009. Chase & Status had also released "Love's Theme" / "Wise Up" (#76, 2005), "Iron Fist" / "Zulu King" (#119, 2005) and "Duppy Man" (#94, 2005). Furthermore Chase & Status had recently remixed Nneka's "Heartbeat" to some success - a track which was included on the re-release of "More Than Alot"; the remix was later sampled in Rita Ora's "R.I.P.".

Rob Swire of Pendulum is credited with mixing duties. A V.I.P. mix complemented the single release, as well as a 12" picture disc featuring both the V.I.P. mix of "End Credits" and another V.I.P. mix of "Is It Worth It".

"End Credits" went on to become the feature track to advertise the 2010 Formula 1 game - F1 2010. Chase & Status were also announced as a support act for The Prodigy in their one off electronic/dance and rock festival - the Warriors Dance Festival - in July 2010 alongside Pendulum, Enter Shikari, Does It Offend You, Yeah? and Zane Lowe, high on the success of "End Credits" which had been in and out of the UK top 100 ever since its release in 2009. The single went on to spend 36 weeks inside the chart (20 of which were within the top 75, and 5 of those atop the dance chart). They also debuted a new single ready for the festival, "Let You Go", featuring Mali, plus "Heavy" with Dizzee Rascal (which also featured on the deluxe edition of his album "Tongue 'N' Cheek").

Parent album "No More Idols" was a monumental success, only held off of the top of the UK Albums Chart by the colossal monster that is Adele and her album "19". For me, "No More Idols" is possibly the album of the decade. I was utterly addicted to it and its variety of styles, blending it with drum and bass, grime and breakbeat. "Hypest Hype" (featuring Tempa T) was released as third single, initially as a free download in November 2010, before their biggest hit "Blind Faith" (featuring Liam Bailey & Yolanda Quartey) in January 2011, before the album dropped. Further singles included the stunning "Time" (featuring Delilah), "Hitz" (featuring Tinie Tempah) - which was reworked for the single release, and "Flashing Lights" (with Sub Focus).

Chase & Status continued their success with third album "Brand New Machine", their "London Bars EP", and most recently "Tribe" which many believed was their attempt at recapturing the magic of "No More Idols" but falling somewhat short. There is much more to come from Chase & Status in the 2010s thread, so I won't say any more!

Chase & Status are my most played act of all time (from January 2006 to date - I do think blink-182 would surpass their figure if we were really talking all-time) - I adored "More Than A Lot" and even moreso "No More Idols". "Brand New Machine" was also great, and "Tribe" was good too but I only gave it a handful of listens - must revisit.

This is a great song! Really put C&S on the map.

Personally it was a slow burner as I didn’t like it much at the time, but it’s now my second C&S track :)

I think it helped put Plan B on the map too; just a few months later he was HUGE with "She Said" and parent album "The Defamation Of Strickland Banks".

"End Credits" isn't my favourite Chase & Status single but after this and "Heartbeat" (the Nneka track they remixed and made a hit) I was falling firmly in love with them, and somewhat enjoying the "More Than Alot" album. They were ace at the Warriors Dance Festival too  (what a day that was)

yes, End credits is amazing

Yeah it was the song that really saw C&S and Plan B take off. I think the 2013 'Brand New Machine' era of Chase & Status was my favourite.

I agree it helped Plan B make a success of 'The Defamation of Strickland Banks' album, which was a great album. 'Stay Too Long' is an amazing song. It's a shame he's not had any hits on the back of that album Ill Manners aside.

Both 'No Mare Idols' and 'Brand new Machine' are fantastic albums, it's a shame they sort of lost it since.

I'm unsure as to whether I'd say they lost it since; I think that possibly, because the whole musical landscape seems to have changed so much since 2013, it's hard for their sound to fit in. I must give "Tribe" another listen and see what I think. I kind of think "Tribe" and "London Bars" would've best come released the other way around!

boh their last album was a mixed bag, some great tracks mixed with some that were not very good and the release strategy was a bit messy

personally they peaked with No more Idols with their best moment being the Let You Go > Blind Faith sequence

for me, Brand New Machine was already a bit disappointing and not as good as Idols

Chuckie & LMFAO - Let The Bass Kick In Miami Bitch

image.jpg

Date: 13 Dec 2009

Weeks at #1: 3 weeks

Official Chart Run: 90-x-9-15-27-31-31-35-53-65-67-82-x-94-65-x (13 weeks top 100)

We do not finish this decade with the more appropriately titled 'End Credits' but instead with this which introduced us to LMFAO who we will see quite a bit of in the early part of the next decade. The song is a mash-up of the Silvio Ecomo remix of Chuckie's '

' and the LMFAO song '
', the latter which charted at #86 in its own right here off the back of the mash-up version, which was promoted as the single. The LMFAO original version was more popular in North America and Australia, whilst the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands got the Chuckie & LMFAO version, which originally got popular as a bootleg mash-up similarly to 'Show Me Love' earlier in the year. The clean version replaced the word 'Bitch' with 'Girl'. It is a fun song about drinking and partying, which was what LMFAO were all about, and I prefer this version as the it is better produced and more energetic than the LMFAO original. Not a dance classic by any means but it's got a catchy groove, dirty synth hook and a big bass drum (hence the name of the original Chuckie song) which makes for an enjoyable listen.

Chuckie was born in Paramaribo, Suriname, and lives in Aruba, which is a small island and constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which led him to be associated with the 'Dirty Dutch' style of electro house music, a sub-genre perhaps most associated with Afrojack that was developing at the time. Wikipedia describes it as a genre characterized by high pitched lead synths over Latin-inspired rhythms and samples.

LMFAO, named after the internet acronym which stands for 'laughing my f**king ass off' are a duo from Los Angeles consisting of Redfoo and his nephew Skyblu who got together in 2006. They were associated with the LA electro house scene and released their first single 'I'm In Miami Bitch' in 2008 and its parent album 'Party Rock' in 2009, which instantly got them popular although it wasn't until 2011 when they got properly massive with two huge hits we'll talk about in greater detail in the next thread. In September 2012 however they split to focus on solo projects and have not reunited since.

Whilst LMFAO would of course go on to be massive for a short time in the 2010s, Chuckie ended up being a one-hit wonder in the UK, but remained popular as a DJ particularly in the Netherlands for a few years afterwards, entering the Top 40 of DJ Mag's annual Top 100 DJs poll in 2010 and spending three years top 40 and a few more top 100.
